Bassist Andrew Bodnar was always dressed and ready for a discotheque or a visit to Planet 9. The whole band is really cooking and Graham's faux madness and vocal skills are amazing. A tour de force video with 22,000 views is criminal too. Lots of videos are criminally neglected but this takes the cake.
I would have to agree that Graham Parker is perhaps the highest performing straight forward rock and roll artist that never got his due as a solid musician and songwriter. Every album an absolute gem! My fave was always Heat Treatment. The album just pulls you through stellar song writing and some of the best licks ands riffs you will ever hear and then is over far too soon...Punch up REPLAY!!!
some of the strongest words ever spoken come from Mr G the Rumour had such fantastic guitar back uo and the horn section made it all come together in the best ensemble ever, all the comments are so right on, heres to the greatest band ever! oh yeah
This was the first track of theirs I heard - on a Saturday afternoon Radio1 interview - and I was sold. I was there for this show (front row of balcony!) - and tons more before and after. The tension and excitement that GP+Rumour built up on-stage is very rare, perhaps only equalled by the likes of The Feelgoods (Wilko period), The Pistols and The Specials (Mark1).
This is what happens when little pieces of perfection come together. Graham is one of the best singer/songwriter/performers ever. And, the Rumour fit together like a glove. I cannot get it through my head why such inferior bands become huge and these guys were never given a tiny bit of credit they deserve.
Great post of a great band. Saw them several times 76-79 including Reading 77, where also on the bill were Thin Lizzy and SAHB- probably three of the best live bands you could ever wish to see.
This is timeless, like any great band. Only the very young - and the very old - are obsessed with the age of music and musicians. Just dig the great band, and forget the roles and stereotypes - it will come in handy when you are older, and still love music. Age and chronology are different concepts...rock on!
Well I gave this a view and a favourite! I'm 24 but a huge music buff and I have staked out all the greats in the past but Graham is one 70s standout that I always have a special place for because he's so criminally obscure and therefore isn't cliche to love. Plus, you feel better digging someone when he's a relatively unknown commodity. Those who are old enough to remember him do, but other than that he's been written out of rock history while others, many lesser talents, endure in popularity.
Journeythur - You have very good taste in music. Great "no more" by Neil Young. And it is a crime that Parker was big in England and shorter than his height in the US. His first 2 Mercury records were so vital that only Elvis Costello might have been better.
Costello went on the do his Cole Porter impression but if you look at Parker's 1989-92 best of you can see he still had it at least 10 years after Costello.
Journeythruthepast Great collection of songs on your site. A Love & Neil Young & Van Morrison & Replacements and now Graham. You are know only second to me in tastes. Graham endures all right. This is live and what a lead guitar (brinsley s) and Grahams demoniacal performance is a standout.
I saw GP+Rumour Live in Finland in 1979.Greatest performamces ever, and i have seen a lot, you know. I believe he's doing something creative anyway ,today and after all, but how can i find it ?Radio is captured by business.
I'm not live in the past. Listen fx. Tom Waits.
Fuck the Kisses and Queens ,those boring old farts on 70'S time anyway.
Saw them at Cloudlands Ballroom in Brisbane in 1980. It was Graham's birthday. Fantastic, happy, concert, with so much dancing that even the timber floor was rocking.
parker is often lumped in w/costello cuz they were both "angry", but graham had less hang-ups w/women than elvis did. ec's 70s music sounds more "punk" (& he's probably a better wordsmith) while gp's is more rooted in american r&b (and van the man), but i'd give parker the nod for a punk attitude. i could see gp in a pub brawl, not elvis (i love 'em both). didn't elvis get his ass kicked by STEVEN STILLS? that's pretty sad. he was drunk, though
Andrew Bodnar (bassist) was flown back in time from 1979 (his disco years) just to play with Graham and the Rumor. Nice futuristic suite and steppin out.
I was probably 12 or 13 when I found a Graham Parker record in a bargin bin at the Pamidas Store. I was a huge fan in no time & bought every other record I could find.
Whoa, fantastic! My elder daughter was just starting to toddle when this was broadcast on the Beeb. She was fascinated by the Parkerilla (she has great taste) and stood upright for so long, mesmerised, that we took a photograph of her in front of the TV

I saw them 1979 in Finland, Ruisrock festival, and think it could be the best performance ever. I have seen Zappa and take Antipasto twice.

@vituraoy He is still performing and sometimes under an alias. Unlike Costello, some of Graham's current music matter is still good.
I know his best of 89 - 92 was great, esp. side 2 and Acid Bubblegum was decent. Yeah I am going back in years but with Costello it stopped at 1981.
