Oh MAN I LOVE him.............When I was 6 years old the kURGAN automatically became my very FIRST celebrity crush..........or more like (character in a film crush)...........Robocop came right after.HAHAHAHA................FUCKING KURGAN!!!!!!!
Just on a Technical Point. IF AFTER you kill another you "Know what they Know, Learn what they Learn" wouldn't Kurgen already KNOW that the women he raped was not Rameriz's ?
AND
After Kurgen delivers the "Raped his woman" line. Did anyone notice the Priest hustling off the choir boys ?
Like
oh hey. THAT is an idea there, I could USE as a Priest
@SuperChuckRaney I don't think anyone ever really gained the knowledge of the slain immortal, it seems to havebeen totally ignored. Kurgan should have been ultra powerful and godlike smart if he killed so many over the course of thousands of years.
@SuperChuckRaney the film and the series differed a bit i think. cant remember that well , but maybe that was the prize, you get all the knowledge of all the imortals you killed at the end, there can be only one!
We need Doc brown from the back to the future movies do explain the continuity issues of all four movies and the TV shows and why characters went on different tangents in the time lines in each case lol
From IMDB: The church scene involving Kurgan (Clancy Brown) was filmed at night time with the permission of the priests in charge. Still, Brown's lines were ad-libbed and were reportedly considered so sacrilegious that the priests off-camera were making the sign of the cross as he said them.
Kurgan is right that the christian doctrine of vicarious redemption cannot absolve us of our responsibilities. It is in fact an immoral doctrine and should be christianity's undoing.
LOLZ, so the Kurgan is in disguise and no-one would recognize him! In THAT? Ahahahaha - the humour in this film is waaaay twisted - there's so many levels here
this is a classic movie. But the one thing I could not bear was Lambert's crap scottish accent. He sounded welsh, for christ sake. Not to mention Connery's egyptian character having the scottish one.
Aside from that, it's classic.
PS after hundreds of years even an immortal would have lost the accent and sounded more european. Lets hope all this is more realistic in the remake.
@Apollo5600 Oh yeah. And where does he actually say that in the movie? It can't be because he meets Connor in Scotland. He just goes there to find him. Connery is an actor who just can't change his accent.
@SuperBailey2009 Welsh v. Scottish accent?....who cares? nobody from the U.S. noticed, that's for sure, you think people know what Welsh is or know it when they hear it? dream on
@SuperBailey2009 Well, they chose a French guy to play a Scotsman, a Scotsman to play an Egyptian and an American to play a Russian XD No wonder they all sound weird! XD
All of Clancy Brown's lines were ad-libbed in this scene and they were considered so sacrilegious that the priests off-camera were making the sign of the cross as he said them.
@TwistedWithin Yup...Clancy Brown really got wrapped up in the character of the Kurgan & it shows in this scene. Plus it's nice to see an actor embrace their character way he did in this movie.
So is it just a moral code that they can't fight on holy ground or is it literally impossible for them to even try due to some kind of divine law?
Based on the Kurgan's character I would have thought it was the latter but here he says remeber was Remeraiz told you which I am to take it means fighting on holy ground or does he mean something else?
@joker777x Interesting - the type of wider mythology that these films tied into: the Blood of Kings, the Silver Cup sync, religion, the Immortals who came through a Portal... Thing is, the Kurgan doesn't realize the Prize means becoming mortal too, haha. He thinks it's some sort of great power to destroy, but it just means a connection to everyone's dreams and hopes. It would mean absolutely nothing to him and he would "fade away"
@floooooooooooooooood It's a moral code. In the series, Duncan happens to fight on holy grounds several times. I think the Kurgan only enjoyed taunting McLeod knowing that the latter couldn't fight back since they were on a holy ground XD.
So did this moment take anyone else by surprise? I mean for the first half of the movie the Kurgan is fairly reserved and stoic, if a bit manical when he fights Ramirez.
I guess Clancy Brown took a lunch break one day, had a ham and cheese sandwich and decided to 180 the character completely.
They just don't make Movies this good anymore. My nomination for the best classic movie ever made. Good vs Evil over the centuries...and the Kurgan was so bad ass as a villain.
@DiamondDavev2 I disagree, he was pretty good as the sadistic prison guard. But this definitely was his most MEMORABLE role. I just think Hollywood never fully utilized Clancy Brown because they didn't appreciate his acting ability. Why else didn't he even get a nomination for this one? It's an injustice, really.
One of the BEST villains of all time! I miss when movies where this good without all the "state of the art" CGI and shit. Made the movies seem more real without all that shit...
@Geemonster69 That's what I do now! So many good Japanese, Italian, German and even French films out there. Some places like Norway, Greece and India are making stellar films too!
@emeraldweapon85 ITS Bbetter to burn out than to fade away.. hey hey my my rockenroll will never die... its a song from the 70's i guest being a rockstar he quoted this song
Clancy Brown (The Kurgan) also voices Mr Crabs from Spongebob Square Pants - Since I found that out I have never been able to watch it in the same way again !!!!
What I just love about this scene is the concept of these two characters who under normal circumstances would be trying to kill each other every waking moment, just talking to each other.
To have a place where for one moment, the war does not happen, and discuss their sides.
Such a agreat concept.
Shame the Kurgan doesn't behave very subtley that often.
@nomibe2911 -- No. He just didn't tell Kurgan that the girl was Connor's because he knew Connor would have immediately gone after Kurgan and he didn't think he would have been a match for him at that time.
Clearly, it takes a very special kind of actor for a role like the Kurgan's. A character with such a bombastic and goofy disposition must be incredibly hard to pull off while simultaneously keeping him menacing. Else, you get the Guardian from the last Highlander movie.
@TKA001 You hit the nail on the head, he is by turns menacing and goofy. Look at how he switches in this very scene let alone the whole movie. Kurgan is a good humoured badass and clancy made the role his own. Can u believe there is talk of vinnie jones playing the kurgan in the remake. What a joke.
@TheChuckk definately, i always thought connor seemed like a creep. Kurgan is just awesome, intelligent, powerful, handsome and charismatic and lets not forget he should have won. He was thwarted so many times when he tried to kill connor. Even in the end battle he had connor at his mercy and only lost cos brenda interfered and bashed him over the head with a pole allowing connor to regroup.
Not sure about a comic. I never got into the tv series or the other films. Thought it was just a piss take really. How they could manage to drag one sequel, nevermind four, is beyond me because the film ended it to suggest that it was all over. This is the one and only film that counts.
@tracygonecrazy1 haha ok, that makes sense. I was only able to answer it with certainty because I'd been listening to it quite a bit in the last month. Really wish I had the vinyl edition though - that must sound amazing.
@romcaname Yeah, it's the original LP, no scratches either. Nobody these days remembers how much deeper analog music sounded played up loud with a good stylus and speakers, 1979 was a different world in every way.
There's a book out there with the full Highlander story that actually gives a little more insight into the Kurgans character and how he became so mad after the constant killing and centuries of being alive. It portrays him as not actually caring if he lived to the end because he, like the rest, had had enough of it all. I think the last clip in the film shows it when he'd been cut open so many times. That last look on his face tells it all. Kinda disbelief but relief at the same time.
Kurt Cobain was famously quoted saying this line: "It's better to burn out than fade away.".. I think Kurt quoted Kurgan when he killed himself in the 90s...
Oh MAN I LOVE him.............When I was 6 years old the kURGAN automatically became my very FIRST celebrity crush..........or more like (character in a film crush)...........Robocop came right after.HAHAHAHA................FUCKING KURGAN!!!!!!!

@wyvernjulz I think the Kurgan chopped Kurt's head off for stealing his line and passing it off as his own!!
