Actually they are kids that were abducted from their homes.Then they were forced to train and they learned dicipline and honor.Then after they could withstand the syrum they injected a body inhancing fluid into them.After which some didnt make it and were crippled for life.Some like john (master cheif) were then strong enough for an armor known as MJOLNIR.

They are making a Halo movie for those who don't know. Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) is the executive producer and the director is a critically acclaimed director of short films and commercials. Also, Bungie has reserved some say in the storyline to the movie, which will be based on Halo 1. However, Fox and Universal Studios pulled out of the project and it is currently on hold until a new financial backer can be found.
