Vibrato does take a lot of practice. Couple tips for anyone who wants to know: you need to keep your left hand/wrist kind of loose, or at least not stiff. A stiff wrist is bad for vibrato & bad for playing in general. I've found that's easier to do when you're using a shoulder rest--it makes the violin resting on your shoulder a lot less painful number 1, and it makes holding up the violin easy, so you don't feel like you're holding it up with your left hand, which allows for the relaxed wrist.

Another tip: Lean the violin/viola against the wall, and practice the movements. It gives you more sense on movement of the wrist.

My preferred brand of shoulder rest is Kun. It's the one that felt molded to my shoulder more than any others I've tried. However the whole shoulder rest thing is a personal preference in and of itself. A lot of musicians don't need one and/or don't like using one. It's just been my experience that they make playing a lot easier and more comfortable.

One reason WHY you have to use 4th finger is because you want it to sound like you're playing on one string that has every pitch. And if you play an open string it'll cause more noise causing some kind of glitch in the song that'll make it sound bad.

Usually, you don't use the open string during a long note. You use the 4th finger to use vibrato.
