The nature of humans is a hedonistic one in which we ultimately do everything to seek pleasure and if peace is the most pleasurable thing to most humans they will seek it. So by seeing the wars as unpleasureable they will seek to stop wars due to human nature and create peace

In season 1 he really had their full support but he proved time and time again in R2 that he was just using them and didn't care about them.
