So is there a big performance difference in Chinese and russian sks's? There is a pre-ban norinco at a local shop for $225, and I'm pretty sure it was military issue, an I'm checking for the triangle tomorrow. If there is no triangle, I'm not buying the gun.
I bought a Russian SKS that was made for their airborn troops. Very short but great, reliable weapon. Love the vids. I've learned quite a bit, thanks.
@ (Iraqveteran8888) Love the videos, but I just want to understand the purpose of this one here, as far as the ammo functioning I got that part, but dont you think to measure the groups you were shooting you should have used a bench locking the rifle in place? You cannot really give a accurate measurement of your groups cause your rifle is not locked down.As far as the Russian ammo shooting thru there, its all about the same anyway, the steel core Norinco ammo is good, probably better than Wolf.
@CJsAmmo This is very initial testing. I have more video planned with the SKS to include more formal and extensive ammo testing. Thanks for the critique.
@Iraqveteran8888 Thanks for the response, I have to admit I really enjoy your videos I am in the firearm/ammo business I would be glad to help you out if there is some ammo you cant find and would like to test, we specialize in hard to find ammo..Message me if I can help out in anyway, IM currently viewing more of your videos keep up the GREAT work!
I never cared for that wolf ammo or the Bear ammo in new yugo it does OK, But the type 56 seems to jam every once in a while and it will always jam the extended mags!!!!!!!!!
was the YUGO Ball Ammo M 67 a brass cased round???? I found cases of this stuff for 199 a case!!!!! we shoot a case a day sometimes. I do not care for the laquerd cases they do jam up in the extendend mags. If the Yugo M-67 Ball ammo is Truely a good brass case I will load my own. As I have 10,000 7.62 Fmj Bullets and enough powder to load 5000 rounds. Please let me know if it is brass?
i love them brown bear hollow points in my wasr 10/63....my first 3 shot group today was about 3inchs at 220 yards....i got a scope, my other groups where not as good but they all hit the 12inch target, and all i had was the gun resting on the mag...i was lying down...that barnaul is good to, but its hard to come by here so i saved it
while the norinco ammo you refer to is "considered" to be "armor piercing" it doesn't perform as well as military grade ap rounds. It is a steel cored round and not a true armor piercing round.
These groups are pretty much what i have obtained from my 762x39 . The sks is a utility rifle They will hit what you point it at . And they are tuff as hell . #########IMPORTANT ############ KEEP FIRING PIn CLEAN BY RUNNING CLEANING OIL DOWN ITS LENGTH . THIS WILL PREVENT SKS FROM FIRING WHEN SLIDE IS CLOSED (slamfire )
i would say yes, I think they gfot the yugos right now right? basically and Sks is an Sks, yugo are really good though, I love mine. Price is right bro.
I thought the ATF had banned the 7.62x39 steel cored chinese ammo as people were building AK pistols, which changed the round from a rifle to a pistol round and they seemed the steel cored as armour piercing and banned its importation creating loads of protests.
you are correct, steel core is considered armor piercing, just get the lead core FMJ. you can still blast holes in 3/8 steel with the yugo mil surplus, just beware they have a bit higher pressure, but the sks are tough shooters, not wall hangers. everything is cheap to replace anyways. call the BATFE and request federal firearms laws and regulations and it will explain all that.
If you do not like the iron sights on the SKS, tech sights makes a AR-15 style sight system for the SKS. I've heard pretty good things about them, however i do not have a pair of their sights on one of my rifles.
For some reason I hate M16 or Mini 14 style sights. I shoot wayyy better using the standard sights. I don't understand the benifit with the peep style sight.
We are going back with the mother load of different stuff to test again hopefully. This is just touching the surface.
Looking back on that day I realize that the sun was gleaming right in our damn eyes and that the targets were not at all the proper type. I think that made the groups grow alot.
I have a russian sks that is in pretty good shape. Never had any stoppages of any kind until...... I modified it to take 20 round detachable mags
the other day I shot about 260 rounds through it using the detach mags and I had 3 stoppages. 1 stovepipe and 2 feeding jams. Nothing serious, took me a second to correct and I am guessing it is the magazine.
Is this common for the detach mags or have you heard of this happening to standard configured SKS's?
Out of 260 rounds a few stovepipes or FTFs shouldn't be out of place. They are very reliable guns, but no one is perfect, and you have to consider that many of them are well used too...
By detachable magazine are you referring to AK47 mags, or just standard detachable SKS mags.
There are a ton of different mag makers for SKS rifles...Do some research and choose a good company to buy from to get every ounce of quality and that may clear your problem up all together.
the mags I was using were 20 round tapco mags which is supposed to be pretty good from what I hear. its not like it repeatedly jammed so I am not too concerned there. I was just wondering if my extractor could be getting worn out or something like that.

Hello you seem good about responding to commments so, I might have missed but do either the wolf classic military or wolf black box have magnetic bullets? Thanks You
yes 50 yards. This is some initla work on the subject. I know these guns will shoot much better, but as stated in the video, I strongly think the targets we were using were the wrong type for iron sights. At 50 yards, all the little squares and lines sort of blur together and make it very difficult to get consistent results. Usually don't have a problem get sub MOA groups at 50 and 1.5-2 inch groups at 100. I am in the process of developing a sub MOA 100 load for this rifle.
I have a little video on the cost breakdown of handloading versus buying factory ammunition. It has a basic reloading set up cost break down in it. You should check it out.
I tried some in one of my SKS's and swore off (and at) using it. Barnaul and Yugo M67 worked better for me. I had some other Russian ammo that wasn't too bad but I forgot which brand it was.
I haven't tried any in that caliber that was impressive, though.
The side mounting POSP style scopes for the SKS is the only way to get truly repeatable accuracy, so yes, the best way to scope one is with the side plate.
It involves drillign and tapping the receiver, as well as inletting the stock quite a bit.
Needless to say, some pretty precise measuring is neccessary as well.
let me ask something crazy. can you convert the sks, in some way, 7.62x39 in a 7.62x51 or 7.62x54? i think it needs just some milimeters of room, can it be done?
Nice shooting the both of you! If you didn't hear IV8888, Hornady recently released there line of 7.62x39mm ammunition with their 123 v-max bullets loaded on steel cases. It would be awesome if you could try that stuff out.

To be completely honest, I think all of the groups were subpar.
I am going to redo some of these rounds and use a different type of target.
I think the type of target we were using was throwing us off.
I have had an SKS group under an inch at 50 yards before so I know its the target.
Even still, it's something to go off of.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
you said that on the sks mounting a scope is worthless, how about a side mounted scope?
bobtaylor1979 2 years ago
The side mounting POSP style scopes for the SKS is the only way to get truly repeatable accuracy, so yes, the best way to scope one is with the side plate.
It involves drillign and tapping the receiver, as well as inletting the stock quite a bit.

bobtaylor1979 2 years ago
It's not possible. It doesn't have to do with "making it fit" it has more to do with pressure. The SKS action can only handle so much pressure.
Now something like 5.54x45mm may be doable.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
I'd have to buy a cheap Norinco to do anything like that.
