According to WAFB (CBS affiliate for Baton Rouge), the video was shot by one Brad Lancaster...I recently uploaded some of the station's news coverage to my account from their 6 PM newscast from said night.
Oh wow. I remember this. The tornado came down Greenwell Springs Rd and jumped, went through our pasture and took out our back fence at our house. We couldn't believe it took out the fence but didn't do an iota of damage to our house.
I remember this. I was 12 at the time and living in Mobile,AL. I remember seeing thsi on the evening news that night because the weather is Mobile had been especially windy with on and off squall lines and thunderstorms that day. I think the weather in The SE that day was generally severe in anyone recalls as well.
@rileyreginald well i used to live in louisana and i can tell you it gets hot there. the sudden hotness in the summer is what makes the weather shaky.
I live in Galvez. It's about 10 minutes from Baton Rouge. I was 8 when this happened. I remember staying at my aunt's house in Gonzales (she lives in Tylertown, MS now).
This tornado was hit June 8th, 1989, just before 8 o'clock that morning. I remember it because my neighborhood was severely damaged. That was a particularly bad morning with 8 tornadoes touching down in 19 different places from Baton Rouge to Grosse Tete. I haven't seen this vid in years. I remember the CBS station caught the vid of it on one of their tower cams and showed that video for years and years after the storm hit in their weather promos.
I remember this - I was awakened by air raid sirens that I had never heard before, wondered what the hell was up... I never DID see the tornado on the news, thanks for posting this video!
Major tornadoes, while uncommon, can happen in this part of Louisiana. One of the deadliest tornadoes in American history formed just north of Watson Louisiana in 1908 and in its path nearly destroyed Amite and did pretty much destroy Purvis, MS (rated F4 historically) ... The tornado pictured here was part of a small south Louisiana outbreak Jun 8, 1989. Even if you were living there, you most likely were not awake. It happened very early in the AM.
oh fuck how cum i never heard of dis shit i live in plaquemin and i am scared of tornadoes especiallly cause mi brothers friends house not 15 miles from where we live got totaled bi a tornado in hurricane gustav
Wow. I'm glad that we don't really have a lot of tornadoes here in Louisiana. This one was a couple of years before I was born, and I'm glad. And wow, that transformer at the end really made a ruckus about blowing up! o:
which bridge is that? I was on the I10 bridge a while back when a Tornado hit Brusly. Being stuck in traffic about 100' up when a Tornado is in sight is kinda scary.
i really y'all don't have tornadoes in baton rouge everyday. that would suck if i moved down there, and got wind of a tornado. i've had enough of 'em here in n. tx.
Nice footage yet AC :), that was one heck of an explosion at the end :), it looked like it was a electrical power station or something being ripped apart.
Top rating once again and thank you once again for sharing :)
that'd be awesome if it was a nuclear plant... BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!! (mushroom cloud gets sucked into the tornado...) XD XD XD XD XD
How would that be cool? Would it be cool if you lived in Baton Rouge if the tornado hit a nuclear power plant?! Think before you say stupid and immature things.
where did u get this footage? from one of the TVC tapes?

I live about 5 miles from downtown B.R. and I don't remember this. I've never seen a tornado. I was 4 in 1989. Guess that's a good thing.

angelle19 3 years ago
Around 1998 was when the Brusly Tornado hit. I don't know where the one in this vid is.
2thetxchick 3 years ago
OMG!!!! what was that big light at the end??
lexileblanc95 3 years ago
Either (a) the tornado hit a transformer and it blew up, or (b) some VERY intense lightning.
