Those students were not there to attend Sunday School. They were not innocent. They were not even all students. Many of them were rent-a-mob types brought in from other places to stir up trouble. They were anti- everything traditional. They were spoiled brats. Just goes to show you don't appreciate what you didn't earn.
In the 60s and 70s there were lots of anti-war protests and 1968 was probably one of if not the most active year of the anti-war movement but the Kent State shootings took place on May 4, 1970. I went to Kent State in the 70s and lived in a dorm just down the hill from where the shootings took place. I knew people who were there that day. It is still true that the poor fight the wars and continue to be sacrificed. God bless all those who serve and bring them home soon.
Going into the national guard kept u from being drafted & sent to Viet Nam. The guards that did the shooting were most likely in the guard to stay out of Viet Nam. They shot protestors against the war in Viet Nam. It made no sense then & it still doesn't.
@Micki1958 ..,sure it did. Those students who wanted to avoid the draft unlike their less fortunate working class, poorer draftees who could not afford higher education found exemptions and deferments, through higher education. Nothing is more unpopular than the more fortunate having to go to Vietnam. Existing draft law was expiring at the end of June 1971. In Feb 1971, the Nixon administration requested a two-year extension of the draft, to Jun 1973.
Jeeze Louize! Normally I don't make youtube comments, but this is a little Beyond the Pale. I am Canadian, this song is a dedication to Freedom of Speech, among other things. As well, it is a memorial to 4 lives that were lost in a tragic event. This song belongs to all the people of the USA, for all time, forever. Those 4 voices will not be silenced. Prespos 2 days early, 2 days late what's the difference? is it July 4, every day? woman, be greatful!
I was at Kent State when they held the 40th anniversary ceremonies in rememberance of the shootings, it was truly a moving experience. Let us never forget.

Neil Young, get off your crazy horse and release your music to You Tube. Add a commercial or whatever you have to do. Alot of people are missing some of your great songs. Like After the Gold Rush. These are classics! Please, pretty please!
@keany06 The war ended because the American people (many of whom also protested 24/7) could no longer stomach the carnage, and our political leaders lost the will to continue fighting. A war like Vietnam was never going to be won, short using a nuke, and thank God my government didn't go that far. The Vietnamese were never going to give up fighting. The French lost and so did we. International opinion, and foreign protests, had litle to do with our losing the war.

At best it's a matter of greed and stupidity.

That's okay. I broke out my old CSNY cd. Don't need the video, either, because the images are burned forever in my mind.
Fucking music Nazis. I spent 20 minutes trying to find a video of this song that wasn't some shitty cover or live and the only one I find is muted. Fucking Nazis. I hope these fuckers burn in hell.
Actually it's the Fucking Music Jews, not the Fucking Music Nazis. Everyone knows Jews own all the major recording labels and publishing houses. Remember, the Fucking Music Jews won WW2, not the Fucking Music Nazis. How else did we get "The Sound of Music"?
It seems WMG has the right to silence Neil Young, and you too..be. Pay up, or shut up! Neil, doesn't that upset you a wee bit? Anyone remember the inventor of the letter "g"?
Ahh that's fine with me.. guess what WMG, I just illegally downloaded every recorded song by Neil Young! And now I'm going to go download every other artist's music on your label illegally :) Get a damn life, it's youtube you idiots, no one is profiting or losing money from this.
The character and intend of this song isn't a commercial one but one to spread the word and shout it out! So what about fair use?
There are songs that you can't own, this is one of them! Whoever believes that america is a free country has to wake up ... the chains are - sometimes - just better hidden, more subtle and sophisticated.
This has NOTHING to do with copyright! Neither had WMG's deleting of the Huffington Post video "No Bravery" !
It's utterly scary and shocking to watch how many videos are censored by WMG. What about free speech? Songs - protest songs - have been a medium to express political opinions since mankind writes history.
Owning copyrights is one thing, owning the exclusive right of free speech is another.
LOL. Another WMG censorship crime. Screencapped this one and added it to my list of censored songs to send to CNN, MSNBC, and all the other major news networks about the evils of copyrights along with a video of a Marine's funeral, that was deleted from YouTube for featuring the fallen soldier's favorite WMG-owned song.
I had a college professor who said he was there that day, on campus. He remembers the warnings---and the students refused to to disband. Even though they were not armed, they started approaching the guardsmen. Further warnings went unheeded and someone gave the order to shoot. Chaos then reigned, people scattered, some stood frozen, some guardsmen kept shooting either because they didn't hear orders to hold their fire or the order wasn't given quickly enough.
if that happend here in ohio know i bet it would start a war, i cant believe it didnt then you do onot use the military on your own people thats making your self the enemy and a traitor and when people have a right to fight back i cant believe that shit like the devil backs form the 1770's
hmm...21st century self-righteous corporate overlords (WMG), trying to stifle a new generation from learning a song about the disastrous effect of 20th century self-righteous governmental overlords who tried to stifle their young generation's protest. Anyone else see the irony?
its takes a coward to shoot at unarmed people we fight like cowards not warriorswe drop bombs from two miles up,we shoot cannons from ten miles away wheres the glory in that
Some people talk a load of bollocks...those people were trying to voice their opinion. They weren't happy with the way things were going in Vietnam. Because the government didn't like it, they shot them. That's okay, is it??? Crap! They were killed in cold blood....nothing else!!!! Dictatorship, I call it.
We are talking about the freakin' Ohio National Guard, not combat troops in 'Nam. Those assholes were there to get OUT of going to f##kin' Nam, Like Dubya was in the Texas ANG for the same thing.
The killing of these men and women was extremely unfortunate but at the same time I dislike all these comments that make our troops look like bad people. The men in women in our armed forces throughout time have given teh ultimate sacrifice to make sure that we can sleep safe at night. And as a american I have a tremendous respect for all of them, and every other fellow american should as well. Also these troops took comands from someone higher than them, maybe not nixon but a military figure.
We haven't really defended our country since 73'. Everything after that has been us trying to build an empire and tell others how to live. I don't condemn all troops, after all most of them get sold the glamor and prestige. BUT there are plenty of people who are well educated and make a voluntary decision to join the military either knowing what they were going to be asked to do or just not caring and that is unacceptable! Those kinds of folks are thugs, they don't have my respect.
Even though this happened almost 40 years ago, it still sickens me. The fact that not a single guardsmen ever spent one day in jail for this is a travesty of justice. Nixon, Rhodes and the Guard may have escaped they eyes of the law, but they will never escape the eyes of God!!!
Look at the pictures of the murdered college students. They had no weapons. Can you see enemy combatants or terrorists or do you see Americans murdered because they attempted to excercise their right to free speech. For a short period of time I call the modern day dark ages, America was under a dictatorship that used fear to control the people, much like Bush did with the color coded mauve alerts along with duct tape and plastic. Conservatives believing this was OK to do, should choke and die.
This was a modern day dark age period. Blacks and students were viewed the same, A PROBLEM because they wouldn't kiss anyones ass. In the conservatives mind killing innocent students was OK then and a few crazy fucks now. It was wrong and indefensable. There was and is no way to justify this incident. For a very short time, we were living under a dictatorship. This is what should frighten real Americans.
I'm right wing, but the murder of those children was unforgivable. If I was Nixon, I'd have ordered the execution of the Guardsmen responsible. none were even old enough to drik legally! are the lyrics "cutting us down" or "gunning us down"? some lyrics sites say 1 or the other. 9one site showed the dead lying like sacks of grain. Guess they don't appreciate discretion. Or the fact that some people can never forget what they see! *shivers* They could at least give a warning 1st!
12 years old when this terrible day happened in Ohio. God, the sheer POWER and FURY of this incredible song still resonates 38 years later! A very dark day in American History... may you rot in Hel$, Richard Milhous Nixon...
the great Neil Young. David Crosby showed him the news magazines w/the story, he picked up an acoustic guitar, went out into the woods alone and came back with this song.
Finally someone points this out. I'm currently a student at Kent State so naturally I've learned about the situation. People should do a little more research before they spout off nonsense.
I was a teenage at the time and remember it clearly. It kills me that young people don't know or don't understand the pivotal point in history of this tragedy. Makes want to go knock that boboa473 upside the head. knate--please try to keep the memory of these kids alive. Good luck to you.
you guys are fucking nazi pigs the goverment SHOT 4 kids for doing something stupid so your say every time a "kid" does something stupid they should be shot???
So you knew those 4 you know for a fact that they didnt disrespect the troops they werent acting like the vets were subhuman if thats what your saying then youre a liar fuck you asshole
Here's your facts - Sandra Scheuer and William Knox Schroeder, had been walking from one class to the next at the time of their deaths. Schroeder was also a member of the campus ROTC chapter. Of those wounded, none was closer than 71 feet to the guardsmen. Of those killed, the nearest (Miller) was 265 feet away, and their average distance from the guardsmen was 345ft.
if they would of sent all those trouble making brats off ti nam they would not have to have the military sent to do such a thing ,because kids wouldn;t not be causeing havok!!!!!!!
yeah, if they sent them off to 'nam then they'd all be war criminals, killing innocent people who look different and talk different then us, so it's okay then.
I was on the Executive Committe of the Student Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam at the University of Texas, Austin when this happened. The next day, the campus pretty much shut down and I experienced one of the most moving events in a demonstration: As the tower bells played "Bridge Over Troubled Waters," a coffin with the names of the four dead was passed over the heads of the students. The next Saturday, 20,000 people marched down Congress Avenue.
ur the one who said to use rubber bullets mattingly17, as they won't kill people!!! Now ur having a go at someone as they suggest that rocks can kill people, he's right! David killed goliath!
I was a USAF/SAC brat back in those days. I got dogs*** thrown on me for being a "war criminal's kid". What BS. Now I'm the mother of two Marines, both vets of OIF. When are people gonna learn to separate the ones who fight from the POSs who send the troops to fight in wrong wars?
This was a travesty & tragedy perpetrated upon our own American kids during 'Nam, on our own soil. May we NEVER repeat it.
Let's love our troops yet hold legally & morally responsible the politicians who screw it up.
it's just as powerful without music

Anyone remember the inventor of the letter "g"?
aviendha2007 2 years ago

TheDalsky 2 years ago
It's utterly scary and shocking to watch how many videos are censored by WMG. What about free speech? Songs - protest songs - have been a medium to express political opinions since mankind writes history.
Owning copyrights is one thing, owning the exclusive right of free speech is another.
TheDalsky 2 years ago 3
Can't we just take turns re-embedding this video & putting the song back in?
LCFlowercandy 2 years ago
It's kinda bullshit because others are using the song. They just won't let it be used for anything Anti-Neo-Con like this.

Great collage BUT Nixon was the REASON for it ALL!!! WORST prez ever!!! then Stupid Bush Jr after that!!!
Elisabetta1971 2 years ago

Universities teach and promote the necessity of FREE SPEECH yet time and again Ohio State Universities are silencing those who do so. Why is this?
Two fathers demonstrated at Columbus State University for Equal parenting rights. They climbed a crane with a banner about EQUAL parenting rights.
Donald Tenn and Paul Fisher of fathers-4-justice are going to PRISON for 18 months for this act of free speech.
I guess it is a good thing that they too were not shot and killed for FREE SPEECH

Also these troops took comands from someone higher than them, maybe not nixon but a military figure.
hiwatup99 3 years ago

Joeclarlk 3 years ago 4
This was a modern day dark age period. Blacks and students were viewed the same, A PROBLEM because they wouldn't kiss anyones ass. In the conservatives mind killing innocent students was OK then and a few crazy fucks now. It was wrong and indefensable. There was and is no way to justify this incident. For a very short time, we were living under a dictatorship. This is what should frighten real Americans.
Joeclarlk 3 years ago
I'm right wing, but the murder of those children was unforgivable. If I was Nixon, I'd have ordered the execution of the Guardsmen responsible. none were even old enough to drik legally! are the lyrics "cutting us down" or "gunning us down"? some lyrics sites say 1 or the other. 9one site showed the dead lying like sacks of grain. Guess they don't appreciate discretion. Or the fact that some people can never forget what they see! *shivers* They could at least give a warning 1st!
