I love that he so open in this interview on the collective consciousness and the coming paradigm shift.. it shows also in his lyrics that hes definately a cutting edge musician.. !
This is basically what I've always thought about writing music. Be yourself and write music that you would want to hear. There will be other that enjoy it too. Being a sellout might get you further but it's an empty feeling.
Now, being hailed as the ultimate fourth-dimensional guitar hero, Devin feels confident in his complete victory. But the internet has seen through Devin's facade, and now sets out to expose Devin for what he really is...a NERD.
He's among my biggest influences. He's opened me up to more clean stuff, and that you don't have to be technical to heavy to be good. Also in a different video he mentioned how a lot of solos and such are nothing more then just shapes and such. When i now look at this crazy fast bass scale that is in a Symphony X song, i see the shape and now its a lot less daunting. Kudos to Devin for opening my eyes.
I had the honor to interview Devin in person (first interview i've ever done), and it was the most nerve wracking experience I've ever had but he was one of the nicest people i've ever had the pleasure of talking to and later that night he went on to play one of the best concerts i;ve ever attended
It's good to see Devin is so humble and down to Earth. He's a man who can admit mistakes freely, rather than be inflated by his own sense of self-importance.
Huge fav of Townsend and thas cool he gets Muse, Matt Bellamy is a genuius in his own right, I'm glad they can co-exist and that tour together would b epic, but Townsend for life.. my fav songs are life, storm & all of Ziltoid lol
I ordered 4 shirts of strappin/devin on merchnow, 6 months later it still hasn't arrived. I want to have some shirts but I'm afraid I'll waste my money again. Does anyone know where I can buy some merchandise safely?
Really reminds me of my choir conductor in High School, Ryan Keebaugh. The guy composes modern-classical music, and his attitude towards his art really is almost identical to Devin, along with his sense of humor haha
Geez Dev, give yourself a break. You've been making music that has had ppl scratching their heads wondering how you do it for years mate. PS I just paid for some of your music from your website because I need you!
Did I hear him right at 3:20? Did he say Mew? I was actually disappointed that he wasn't playing when I was in Vancouver, but Mew played. I didn't know anything about them, but went because they seemed interesting. Maybe Devin was doing me a favor. Mew is great.
I hate record companies. If i go looking for some real awesomeness - LIKE DEVIN TOWNSEND. I can't find it, because Kanye West has a new single and there is no place for Devin in the record store. I live in Norway, mabye its just diffrent. But i want more Devin in stores!
Devin's right, and he's been doing what I was doing for years, doing what I do...Seemed like fighting a loosing battle, but I could not lie to myself and join an indie band...and one day it clicked and we found our niche.
He's right, there's something out there for all walks of life and hell, I'm all for the geek shit! Who cares, u are what u are and I am me!
this man has such a profound respect and love for music. he's so real and honest and sees through all the bullshit that drives 16 year kids to hunger for stardom and american idol status. his rants are the best! i can relate to everything he's saying when i comes to being a musician and the painstaking, yet beautiful struggle to create great music
These videos have made me respect Dev as both a person and a musician even more than I had before...A man who is truly an inspiration to us musicians. \m/
I think that's GGGarth's chair. Not sure though. I'm going to his school in Vancouver and he's good friends with Devin. He wants to try and get him in as a guest teacher or something. Hopefully the first DTP tour ends in time!
If I were in charge of Canada, I would designate Devy as whatever the musical equivalent of a poet laureate would be and give him a lifetime arts grant to continue making whatever music he desires. :)
@p1neconeboy well, in a way you [we all] are in charge of such a thing. but we'd have to do it personally by finding the ways most applicable to us to support his art. and it's up to him to make those means available. and so far he's done a pretty good job and seems to realize that the brick and mortar CD industry is a failed system, so we'll see what comes from him and what ideas he takes from the public and his listening group. i'm going to check him out at the boston house of blues in january
I downloaded a lot of Devins music but I felt so guilty so I actually found a place near me that had all the strapping albums so I got those and also a few of the DTB ones. Im thinking of getting a few shirts also so I can give a little back to this man of pure brilliance :) Devin your awesome!
@Vejo3 find the right means so that you're actually supporting him, and not a big record company. because there's a fair chance he sees extremely little money from record sales.
@Vejo3 Im the same, im actually tempted to hunt his address down and post him the cash for everything ive downloaded, he's had to much influence on me musicially and as a person for me not pay him back.
@Vejo3 Devin actually convinced me to stop downloading music. When he said "download my music, if you want. The most important thing is that you listen" in an interview, I said "no, I will support artists such as yourself so you can further share your experiences".
Devin is so inspirational and is just definition of a true musician. Makes me proud to be Canadian for sure.

Devin has always been so far ahead of the so-called 'cutting edge' that 98% of bands will never catch up with him.
And it's cool that he mentions Muse, which is one band that IS up there with Devin in terms of defining this generation of rock music.
