my opinion, protector is the guard that has kept the true character of her confided within herself, so many thoughts are locked inside her head and everyone she knows, the 300 people, have no idea who she is. the sound is the beginning of change and its not coming from a friend, through the door, but rather from herself seemingly up through the floor
what I love is that its the end of the album and her life of being alone and judged but now, she can live free from the confines of this protector

The Buffalo Creek Disaster was one of the worst industrial disasters in US history, yet most people know nothing about it. I myself lost family at Buffalo Creek and the coal company the slurry dam belonged to declaired it "an act of God" as they often do when something they do goes wrong. They are a heartless industry that care more about the dollar sign than the people. Click my screen name to see for yourself some of the evils of the mighty coal industry
ive been told this song is alluding to the Buffalo Creek flood of Logan County West Virginia in 1972 which killed 125 and left 5000 people homeless. The flood was caused by the collapse of a dam that held the black waste water of a coal company.
best of our generation, greatful to have grown with them. We can call them our own. They made the music for us. True musicians.

I can't figure this song out, it's incredibly simple, but it's got a lot to say

oh. I didn't know that. That's cool. not the death and homelessness, but the song aluding to the flood. that's the cool part.
