Hi Dan. I'm a big fan of yours, though, I'm only 16! I'm in Advanced College art where we have to try all forms of art. I love throwing, an I do it pretty well. BUT, I suck at centering so bad. You make it look so easy! Any tips?
just watched another of your vids, then this one. again i say you've got some crazy skills. throwing something that fast, with little wobble and thin. that takes some work
@converse48 slow you wheel down, its actually a LOT easier at first if your wheel is slower when you center. make your body go rigid and tuck your elbows in.
Probably couldn't use one of these here in Alaska; the frost heaves in winter would shatter it, most likely. Maybe if you only partially buried it? That way it wouldn't be crushed by the expanding and contracting earth.
Dan, what kind of a wheel are you using? I like the big tub. Thanks for the great video. I've made a few and going to try them in my California vegitable garden. Maybe flog a few.
Dan...did you try any of these in your garden? I used a small one beside a tomato plant and it really worked. When I dug it up in the fall there were roots around it.
I wish you can make my ceramic pots for school lol. It just takes me forever to make something. You just make many in minutes! And they turn out to be perfect!
If you want a slow waterer to bury, just poke a nail hole in the bottom of an old milk jug and plant it with your plants. I've rescued transplants in the dog days of summer this way. Fill as needed.
I agree, it doesn't look like something you should bury :) Clever idea though, I'd like to try and make one to see if it works! Nice new angle for the camera :)
Oh It looks so fun I wish I knew how to do that kind of stuff : )

How do you bury it ? for instance, does it have to be in between the plants? Also, how far or how many plants can it water?

maan i heard somewhere it not as easy as it looks....
arnoldnavarro21 11 months ago
I don't really see this working with stoneware, since it's relatively non-porous. Do you know what kind of clay is usually used?
HarmlessBystander 11 months ago
@HarmlessBystander Apparently it's just really low fired terracotta so It's really pourous ...and pretty fragile too.
Cheers,dan.
youdanxxx 11 months ago
It's always a pleasure to watch you, but how is it a self-watering pot? (Too lazy to read all those comments.)
turuanu 11 months ago
@turuanu Hi,It's because it's low temperature fired and pretty pourous the water can slowly seep out of the pot and into the soil apparently.
Cheers,Dan.

the key word there is LOOKS
i can never even center the dam piece of clay
converse48 2 years ago
That's true, once that is mastered you can do everything else.

We didn't have any need for watering over here in England this year as it was the wettest Summer ever.
I suppose I could put an empty one in next year and use it to draw the water out of the soil.LOL.....
Cheers,Dan.

I was wondering if you used a low fire clay . Seems like this would be more porous, but maybe too porous.
leweeja66 3 years ago
I'm not sure, probably just biscuit firing it would be OK.
I really don't know,I suppose It depends on how fast you need it to seep through.
Dan
youdanxxx 3 years ago
@leweeja66 most clay is fired at cone 06(low) the first time it is fired, but most glazes are cone 6(mid)

I just had to add, I must be one of the lucky ones because after 3 hours of making these, mine really should be buried:)
