@kelman221 Nothing too offensive but things like what he says at 4:08 "that Italian sure is confident!" then "the tan (read: black) is mad already! [*chuckles*] he is getting angry..." ('short-tempered' is a common stereotype of black people in many Arab countries). And he continues to sneak in similar remarks into the commentary on this unusual match. I don't think it's that offensive, I just thought it was funny how unprofessional and inappropriate he was being.
@gorogawa Damn, sounds like he is trying to be a stand-up comedian, which is very inappropriate for this situation as you said. I also had no idea of the different stereotypes black people have in different countries haha. Makes me think some of these stereotypes may have some truth behind them.
@VoltaireTennis the umpire asked the players if they wanted to stop, because it was very late and extremely dark. initially Monfils said he'd stop, and Fognini said he couldn't see. Suddenly the crowd start screaming, and then Monfils decides he does want to play! Fognini complains because he can't see, and the umpire has the nerve to dock him a point at the start of the game for delay of game! So basically Monfils cheated and the crowd influenced the referee's decision to carry on.
What a fiasco this was.I saw this match on Espn2.Patrick McEnroe was right on when he said,"the referee should not let the players decide if play will continue.he should make the decision".
@MeRcUnO8 Fabio vuole sospendere la partita perche dice che la notte impedisce di giocare correttamente. Ma sai parlare italiano anche tu, allora non bisogno di me ;-)
that was disgraceful, grande Fognini ended up winning the match, but under so much pressure, the crowd should of been more understanding but it was disgusting the way they behaved, organisers should do what is right for the player and not the crowd at the end of the day NO PLAYERS=NO CROWD.
@tylerbegg cuz fognini wants to stop, and they want play to continue while he cant see so that their player will win. im not too fussed about the crowd, i think monfils was cheating :/
@Jerfanian When they should have called the match Monfils was starting to cramp up and he felt if they postponed the match until the next day he would be too sore to compete well (Which he was). So he convinced the ref to play in the dark instead, the crowd was also heavily on his side. Only three people cheering for fognini, his trainers. When Fognini argued he lost a point cause the ref claimed a delay of game. However, Fognini was good enough to hold off Monfils that night and the next day.
This sort of happened last year too. It wasn't to this extent, but it also showed the French Open doing loads of favors for Gael Monfils. In a 4th round match against Andy Roddick, the American repeatedly complained as night quickly fell. "I can't see the ball," he repeatedly told the Chair Umpire but his complaints fell upon on deaf ears. The Chair did nothing even as Roddick missed multiple easy overheads. Meanwhile, Monfils did everything he could to incite the crowd against Roddick delaying.
Monfils came away with a straight set win, but the way he behaved and the way Roddick was treated by both the fans and the officials was disgusting to me. At least the French Open does not seem to favor all French players in this way. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga asked to play his first match on a later day and was not granted this request. Richard Gasquet made this request as well due to winning in Nice just last weekend but was also not accommodated and ended up running out of gas against Andy Murray.
IMO, they should've stopped. It looks much brighter on camera than it is in real life.
The real darkness of the sky is shown here 7:52 - and that is DARK.

Monfils is a fcking joke. This guy has all the talent and athleticism in the world but doesn't use his brain.
Meanwhile, Fognini's groundstrokes have no pace at all whatsoever. The guy looks like he's playing pong.
