  • The only thing i dont like about this is the flimsy barrel. But its a pretty cool potato gun

  • never shoot a 2 in trailer ball out of one.

  • to move down to a 4" dia it would need to be 15' lol so everything needs to be in scale to a point and since ur using meetered propaine thats another formula that i see has already ben covered ... by u actuly lol

  • c:b is everything with ur kind of cannon its not neccaseraly biger is better or anything like that its just that everything has to be in scale. the optomal c:b i have found out to be is 0.6:1 if u dont know what c:b is its the chamber to barrel vulume ratio so say u have a 6" * 4' chamber (ruff estamet from the video) that would be a vilume of about 1357.344 ci so for it to be say a 5" dia. barrel it would have to be acording to this ratio would have to be 9' 7"

  • So I guess this is what the Rock-It Launcher from Fallout looks like in real life..

  • yeah it doesnt have that much power, the biggest misconception is that a big potato cannon = big power, it might be with actual cannons but with this type its the other way around, the smaller the combustion chamber, the bigger the "explosion" inside the chamber= A LOT more pressure= POWER! a big combustion chamber, means that the explosion has too much space to fill, a lot of room for explosion to grow, and be contained.

  • @Skeebled I would have to disagree. The smaller the chamber, the shorter the barrel has to be. The shorter the barrel, the less time that there is acceleration. Inside a combustion Potato Cannon, there is roughly 30psi until the potato exits the barrel. The longer the barrel, the more time that acceleration is acting on the potato. I measured the volume of the chamber and I should actually have a 12ft barrel. Note that this version still shot ~500 measured yards. Thanks for the comment!

  • @DokumentAMarble dont get me wrong, i can tell you put alot of work into it, and its a good potato cannon. all i am saying is that it would seem like it should have more power for the size. my opinion is (and i might be wrong) is that the barrel is alittle too long, also that fancy injection system and electrhonic control panel might need tweaking. The sound of it is what makes me think that, potato cannen is supposed to go "BOOM" and this one goes "PFFFT" as potato leave that long barrel.

  • @Skeebled Yeah that's not right. It's all about the ratio of chamber volume to barrel volume. The explosion happens throughout the entire chamber of any size. A bigger chamber has more air and can therefore have more fuel mixed and still combust. It expands at the same proportion so a larger chamber has a higher rate of expansion and more volume displaced in the combustion reaction.

  • @SecondAgeOfReason you're right, but thats assuming you have a high fuel to air ratio. it wouldnt be so if you're using the same amount and same type of fuel in both a big and a small cannon. You are basicly saying, a bigger chamber with more air and fuel will produce a bigger explosion, thats a given, but try using same amound of fuel in both a big and a smal chamber, see what happens.

  • @Skeebled If the amount is optimized for the small chamber then it might not even be enough for the big chamber to work. If the big chamber does combust completely however, it will displace the same amount of gas stoichiometrically but the heat increase is a different variable. I don't understand the point of fuel being limited though. A bigger chamber up to a point allows for a better potato cannon. I had an idea of making one with a large fat chamber and incredibly long narrow barrel to snipe

  • @SecondAgeOfReason well said about the chamber volume to barrel volume ratio. If the barrel is too short, the projectile is leaving the barrel before the propellant has applied all its force, If the barrel too long, the propellant is spent before the projectile leaves the barrel, and it's doing nothing but slowing down the projectile.

  • @Skeebled How does that make any sense? What you are saying would be true if you were using a fixed amount of gas, but more air/fuel mixture (Read: Larger chamber) means more energy, which can be used to propel the potatoe. Obviously a proper sized barrel is needed. I do agree though that the sound of this cannon doesn't have that "crack" that usually means a very powerful combustion. I just built a 14ft cannon and I can tell you that it is insanely powerful compared to my 8ft gun....

  • Wicked! How much did it cost?

  • it dose not look like it has power?!

  • booooooooooooring

  • err... shorten that barrel. It's bowed which means the exit velocity is reduced. That's all.

  • out of real guns, water guns, BB guns, airsoft guns, paintball guns, etc the only thing ive never shot was a spud gun or spud cannon

  • its so quiet

    mine makes a giant "phoooosh"

  • sick cannon, but it looks like its not at its full potential. if you drilled some porting in the front half of the barrel or shortened it a foot or two it would probably help relieve the pressure of all the air the potato hits inside the barrel and give u much more velocity and range. i made a big potato cannon too, not that big but still big. it had a 5 1/2 foot barrel and had the same problem. i cut off 14ish inches and it increased the range and velocity massively

  • i have the tutorial for firebombs for spud guns in my channel

i thought i did reply you, it looks weak because that thing looks so big, and i can tell by the speed i see the potato

  • It is hitting 100-175ft from the treeline in the distance on average. I really don't like the ignition setup I had for it though, If i built it again i would use a taser like all of my new ones.

  • it looks weak for its size

  • how so?

  • @DokumentAMarble i think he means that your

    spud gun is kinda silent

he thinks every spud gun goes BOOM

  • yea, i made one out of abs tubing and it was a beast it lasted for like 3 years. i think the dimensions were 4 inch tubing chamber ~ 1.5 ft long and 4 to 2 inch adapter with a 4 ft 2 inch tubing barrel. i just drilled 2 screws into it to make an ark and used a barbecue ignition. it had a huge screw on end cap.

  • My cannon less than half the size of this one and shoots harder and further. You fuel mix is too rich or your barrel is too long. That is why you get a thud noise on most shots and not a nice crisp CRACK!!! Mine hurts my ears on a good shot.

  • Try filming it with a cheap camera then listen to it. Mine does CRACK promise, i'd love to see your design though. I've made a few more since this one several years ago.

  • who says humans arent ready for a zombie apocalypse

  • Could've used galvanized steel pipe instead.

  • I did add a piece of 1"pvc from half way out the barrel down to the bottom of the chamber. Helped a ton.

  • hey man go check mine out. its the basic spud gun design but we use acetylene for the propellent which is used in cutting torches. its a really sweet video. your spud gun is pretty awesome too man

  • you should shorten the barrel or replace it with a more sturdy plastic or both

  • The barrel is actually 2ft to short already. and Schedule 80 pvc would just weigh more. But yes a wire to help hold it up would have probably helped departure.

  • i thought shorter barrels were better provided theyre not way too short

  • that is a lovely view where ever you are. And does that really fire 500 yards? like the design

  • Yes it does indeed.

  • you ever get it upgraded to a stun gun?

we bought a bbq igniter from walmart thats battery operated and it works just like a stun gun.

you should check out my crappy guns hahah

  • Anyone ever made a full automatic spud cannon, self loading, just hold the trigger and spray? I am trying to make a small scale one, also trying to avoid using electric motors and batteries and anything that can limit the fun - purely gas or aerosol.....

  • not that i know of, but i wouldnt think it would be hard, just time consuming. be sure to send me a link if you do though!

  • This wont apply to this cannon, but I like 1 second of hairspray and 1 second of aerostart (have a friend hold both aerosol cans) tighten up the lid on the back then wait 3 seconds, ignite and it will recoil harder than the cannon shown, I shot an old spark plug 400metres doing this... (I still had to use a potato stuffed into the barrel snug (2 inch barrel dia.) with the plug stuck in it.)

  • you should mount that to a car

  • thats what she said

  • i can hear that your gun is not getting max power try gas

  • it is already on propane. i just hadnt gotten the regulator tube to the right size when i recorded that

  • Oxy-Propane guns usually vaporize spuds. You have to use something more substantial once you get near supersonic... SpudFiles dot com

  • actually its max is 9% at 10% it wont explode. 4.5 is optimum. also mixing oxygen with it would create to much of an explosion for this setup. but you are right.

  • me and my friend have constructed one much much much smaller then that we will post it up on youtube as soon as we get a camra our one is about a meter or so long and can shoot potatos about 800 to a 1KM this thing is nuts its all about the desighn of your combustion chamber and how tight the potato is inside the barral i will post it up as soon as i get a camra (by the end of the week) and you will then see what a potato gun can do !!!

  • been there done that.... i should post mine up hehhe i run propane and oxyigen hahaha im nuts i know

  • lol dude why such a big gun? mines more than half the weight & size and it does the same job

  • I shoot 600feets without all that 54pounds gun.

  • thatd be why i said 500yards...

  • How many CC's is the chamber?

I run a 1100 CC propane chamber with 10 foot 2.5" special order pvc for tennis balls, ideal was almost 15 feet, but too bulky at that point.

    Your looks pretty good....

Can't see your metering system for the propane.

  • shorten the barrel it's 2 long that it's bending it's going nowhere near where u r aiming it

  • that thing never 'cracked' when it fired,,weak

  • again. Bad mic

  • ur gun is not so powerful itself..

  • ahh. good old potato cannons!

  • Just wait until I get a video up of my pneumatic. And yeah, I shoot thing like flaming barbies, potatoes, rockets, and more. A things.

  • Idiot. Way too long of a barrel for any real velocities to be achieved. The fricking barrel is so long it is bending.

  • my barrels 5ft long, i put it through a wall

  • Range tests are better. You can tell that the guy had a terrible flight time because he is pointing at it the whole time. My air cannon has a flight time of about 12 seconds and my gunpowder cannon is about 17.

  • Damn it I hate it when there's all these potato gun videos but they never shoot at anything! COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • try oxy n acetalene but tape combustion chamber up this should stop the pvc flying everywhere (when it does fly apart cause it will due to sudden shock)and fill a tennis ball with silicone

  • My friend made a compressed air and propane cannon, and he broke the sound barrier. (with ball bearings and marbles).

  • well marbles are small so.... = easier to do that.

  • i mean like those fat marbles, like 1.5 inches or whatever diameter it has. it is seriously cool. a lot more powerful than this cannon. ( it's compressed air and hydrogen at around 80 psi, which when ignited expands a ton, breaks a burst disk, and ignites a second layer of pressurized propane and air which breaks the second burst disk, and shoots a ball bearing at like mach2 or 3.

  • mine only shoots 100 yds, but its a crude instrument put together in 30 minutes, whats the most powerful stuff i can put in a PVC combustion chamber?

oh and that gun is fucking gnarly

  • If you could pressurize the propane oxygen (4.3% propane) to 100 psi, and open a valve into a spark where it would ignite, that would be insanely powerful. Try mapp gas if youd rather.

  • theyr illigal in australia! but i made one anyway! breaking the law, breaking the law, washing the dog washing the dog!

  • 500+ yards isnt weak. The reason it sounds weak is i recorded it with my digital camera. they arent known to have the worlds best mic's and it was f'n loud so i think it overloaded the mic anyway. Ill shoot it again and record it with an actual camcorder later.

  • Yea, 500 yards is really good. Mine will shoot probably 350 yards with a potato, 400 with a caulking tube.

  • it looks heavy...and complicated :P

  • Sounds weak due to the long barrel.

    v powerful.

  • compressed air works better

  • not at all, too much to carry around anyway

  • that gun has ED. hahahaha

  • that thing is weak

  • just like your mom. oh wait i forgot. that isnt weak at all

  • You should christen it leopold!

  • theres not silencer on it, its jsut along barrel, most spud guns are tha quiet. ROFL AT THE SAGGING BARREL

  • yeah, actually it is a silencer. thatd be why i said "with a silencer" i made it from a piece of schedule 20 pipe with a towel around it (and holes in the pipe) then another pipe over the inside one (also with holes in it). it works quite well actually. Yeah i have since added a piece of 2X2" wood to help support the barrell. 10ft of pvc will always sag by itself.

  • wow, you actually made a silencer for it... well then the audio for the video doesn't do it justice. Good job

  • yeah the audio stinks, the video was taken on my digital camera. im goign to get my hands on a digital video camera and chronny. ill post that video as soon as i make it :P

  • how did you make a silencer?

  • replace the propane with acetelyne or hydrogen and then you will have some power.

p.s. dont use pvc pipe because it can explode and kill you. use steel or thick copper.

  • pvc is rated up to 100psi. The explosion burns at a constant 30psi, it burns and keeps the pressure pretty constant till the potato leaves the barrel. With compressed air, the psi lowers as the potato moves down the barrel. So no, the pipe wont explode and kill me. Thanks for the warning tho.

  • sounds like its firing too rich. a little more oxygen will give you a crisp fire

  • I was walking down the street and suddenly was hit by a quickly descending potato. I guess it was from your gun. I just scraped it off myself, ate it and went my merry way.

  • heh is it 16 feet long? mines bigger :P.

  • the potato's being fired would rot by time they got to iraq, and they are getnig killed by aussault weapons, bombs, grenades, suicied attacks not potato cannons

  • what a bloody miserable comment....

  • children in iraq are starving and you waste food, children in iraq are dying from weapons similar to this, why dont you grow up?

  • lmao, what do you do? like evry movie in the world has guns in it, most tv shows unless you watch carebares or somthing, and kids in iraq might be starving but if we eat the potatos there still gonna be starving so whats the difference?

  • get lost, go hide under your mamas skirt, or where ever people like you hide.

  • shitty filming

  • haha yeah it is. It was recorded with a digital camera on a windy day, and my windows movie maker doesn't work and i don't feel like downloading something else. Ill put up better ones soon enough.

  • Watch mine, The window 1 is the best

  • that suck i made one to fit golf balls it can do about 600meters per second no joke. and it was tiny

  • Well i guess its a good thing that i made the barrel detachable. That allows me to attach any size barrel of any length i choose to the combustion chamber. After a 3" barrel it will start losing preformance tho..

  • thats retarded, sure it shoots far but theres no smoke no bang no thing just phhhhhooomp - need to be a big BANGCHAKACHAKA i think otherwise is just phhooomp...

  • .... I don't think you understand. The "bang" is so loud that the mic I am using can't pick it up. I don't know if you can tell but everyone there is wearing ear pluggs.

  • credit to you my friend!

  • whats with the count down?

  • Nope, Everything Blue is part of the combustion chamber, Everything Red is part of the barrell, and all the hoses are for propane distribution to the massive chamber.

  • Do you have a compressor on the bottom there? What is that? Very cool engineering.

  • Well, I am using my digital camera as a camcorder, and it doesnt exactly have the best mic in the world. I have shot it off in my neighborhood and set off multiple car alarms at once.

  • yeah its nice, but it just doesnt have the sound of a nice fly spray/ combustion bazooka.

  • Actually the barrel is too short, to provide optimum barrel:chamber ratio it should be 8ft long. You are right about the curving though, im thinking a wire support to the handle?

  • Damn, you guys are nerds.. :P Very cool gun, though.

You should try out other fruits and veggies and compare distances.
