@snuffwitch actually there is a 10th planet, but its not nibiru and its not on a collison course. Its named Iris its just beyond Pluto, its the reason why pluto was demoted to dwarf planet. Astronomist's couldnt bear the idea of a novice astronomer with a mediocre telescope found it. So to save face, they bumped pluto to dwarf planet so they can min. Iris's discovery.

@governmentcheese411 No, techinically I am correct, from the sun on out of our solar system. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Iris. I know they classified Pluto as to being a dwarf "planet", as well as Iris. Keep in mind the primary reason why Dwarf Planet title was created was to save face. Astronomers, NASA could not stand a 'novice' astonomer found Iris with a weak telescope and they couldnt even with the best telescopes. Like it or not its 10 planets

@shadowwbn Planets, asteroids, Kuiper Belt objects, etc. are all just objects-- the pebbles in my driveway are objects too, but we wouldn't classify all of them in the same category because there are important differences in them. "Dwarf planet" is a consolation prize for people who can't give up the notion of Pluto as a planet. After a hundred of them are discovered drifting around the far reaches of the solar system all talk of them being "planets" will fade away.

Also, like I already said, since the ONLY, OONNNLLLYYY, difference BY DEFINITION between Dwarf Planet and Planet is that the Dwarf Planet still has debris 'planet tessimals' within its orbital track to the sun. That is not a consolation prize, plus I seriously doubt it will fade away, Pluto and Eris are both satelites of our sun, and have satelites(moons) of their own, which is unique.

@shadowwbn A greater difference is the orbital plane of Kuiper Belt objects like Pluto, which is far more diffuse than the plane in which planets orbit, such that the angle to the sun of these objects varies greatly and their orbits are far more eliptical. Would you refer to comets as "planets" as well? Obviously the stuff at the outer edge of the solar system shouldn't be lumped togethhr with the 8 planets.

@pwnUgood I wouldnt consider a comet as a planet because it doesnt have its own orbiting satelites and I do not recall them as to having enough gravity to push/pull on a planet. It does have a unique orbit, but when you take into consideration that it is extremely far from the sun, and size, it is plausible to think something is perturbing its orbit like that, like Pluto does for neptune.

An average astronomer used a low power telescope and discovered Eris, not NASA, not a profound Astronomer. Roughly, aroud this time period the debate on what is a planet was discussed because they could not fathom the idea of being out done from their lower-heirarchy. They did not even let him name the freaking thing. He wanted it called "Xena"

@shadowwbn AND.... there is nothing to support they were able to see pluto, period. even with hubble it is little more than a gray dot. plus, if they could have seen pluto. then they would have had NO problem seeing all of the outer moons which would have quadrupled there count of the planets.

Oh assuming you call Pluto a planet like we did for quite a long time, our solar system has in reality 12, 13, 14 (somewhat around that) planets. assuming small round planets like things, but inside clusters of debris are not real planets (which were able to collect nearly all of the availiable material) than the solar system even has only 9 planets... There are things outside bigger then Pluto... Eris for example...

So assuming Pluto is not a planet you need to find planet IX before searching planet X (But no, no matter it's size, oject that far outside has cleaned it's path from debris, so ALL of these obejcts will be dwarf planets = Chances are bad)....
And if you decide to call Pluto a planet, you need to do so for the 5 others too. Than we have 14 planets and some more candidates for being the XVth...
