  • Mark behrens

  • Very apt description of 'today's prosperity gospel'. Good work Derek Webb

  • Great vocals--good song, nice guitar playing.

Hey folks, I know you're probably busy; but, WOULD YOU PLEASE READ the following: I wrote a song from a phrase that my best friend, who was dying from cancer would say to me--”Mark, even if I don’t feel good, God is good”. He told me that even though he was dying, he was never happier in his life. Only God can do that. His name was Ron Williams. The song is titled--GOD IS GOOD EVEN IF; Just type: mark behrens (for the search)

    Thanks

  • Wow... I guess nine people aren't so easily satisfied (by call of Derek Webb's wild love)! Don't be dislikin!!!!!!! Thumbs up if you agree!

  • @PlzLikeMe111IAmFunny Yeah, 9 people tripped down the aisle and died. Can I get a what what?!?!11

  • @listentomeandlikeme: What What

  • Sorry Derek, I don't think I can love you as a wife.

  • Maddeningly beautiful song. A few months ago I drove 15 hours through Texas (only halfway through the state LOL) to see him in concert with Donald Miller. Second best decision of my life.

-Amazing performance, and I didn't realize he was that short lol. I really wanted to talk to him or just give him a hug but I think he was sick so he headed out early.

Now I'm learning to play this on guitar! Wish me luck!

Derek Webb, you are an expert wordsmith and an acoustic magician, keep it up!

  • I saw Derek Webb at a concert tonight opening for Jars of Clay in Charleston, Maine. It was the first time I heard him and I became an instant fan!

  • Thank you, Jesus for your people. . . your children who have guts enough to sing the truth. . . in Jesus' name.

  • Love this song!

  • Today I discovered Derek Webb. Today I became a fan!

  • This is one of my favorite songs. It definetly shows how we treat our relationship with Christ in so many ways. Its such a deep song.

  • Reminds me of Hosea.

  • @CFries87 we're playing it at my church for a service on Hosea, fits beautifully.

  • @linkinzoolander wow, really? Playing the track or performing the song? Do you expect any angry objections? Either way, you have a very progressive church, I'd like to visit.

  • @bbow73 at first everyone sort of stopped and looked, but once the idea set in that we were whores to sin set in.. i think it set in perfectly.

    newspring.cc

  • @linkinzoolander that's cool, I'm glad people 'got it'

  • saw this live great song

  • @uhytiful ure message perverts the gospel intentions in this song

  • @uhytiful your post has dirtied the gospel intentions in this song

  • First!!! :D

  • 5 stars.. beautiful song beautiful singer

  • this is youtube...calm down

  • Legit, real legit.

  • @lastinglewis you used the word "legit" wrong

  • I thought we were new creations in christ.... I agree that the church is nowhere where it needs to be and many things that Derek talks and writes about but after accepting Christ i am no longer what i used to be.

  • @TheExit223 You have not undergone a transformation- you are still a sinner. But that is a huge difference, you are now aware of your sin and recognize your need for a savior. Every time we sin, we choose death over life, worldly riches over jesus. We need Jesus again and again every day.The church, the individuals, the sinners

  • @hawaiianchica123 But if i am redeemed, or paid in full, then although i still sin on a daily basis, what did Jesus pay for and what changes? Amen to me needing more of Jesus! But he paid for everything once and for all! If we are "born again" we are no longer what we used to be. We are no longer the whores, liars, cheats, robbers, murderers or prodigals but children of God. Who wraps us in fine cloth. Although i still struggle i am set free from my chains. :)

  • @TheExit223 We may be transformed, and redeemed, but we are still sinners. We can sin, so we do when we want to. We may stray, we lose sight of what God wants for us, but to be redeemed means that even those sins are covered by the blood of the lamb.

  • @THX1449 true that :)

  • @hawaiianchica123 Dude, one death, one sacrifice. That's it. For by grace we have been saved, not of ourselves. We accepted his forgiveness, and so we are transformed into his followers, and we strive daily to follow him. It's not about choosing death over life, it's about losing sight of the goal, which is why we have a savior to keep us on track.

  • @TheExit223 The song wasn't just written to condemn Christians for our usual unfaithfulness to God, and you are right, we can be assured that God has forgiven us through Jesus' blood. But God also calls us to be faithful to him. I think this song was written more like a reminder to challenge our motives for our actions and provoke conviction. Just look at David, the Psalms are about everything that was on his mind about God; All the good, bad, rebellious, and repenting thoughts he had.

  • @ShadesAndRed Agreed :)

  • What a gifted man...loves Jesus, vocal genius, and obviously he is very passionate about what he believes in. God Bless and thanks for all the lovely music CC!

  • Comment removed

  • this dude is raw.

  • srry i was watching the forien language version :)

  • how can u even understand what that Tae dude is even saying? unless u think the beat is better but i think this one is better

  • Taeyang Wedding Dress is better lol. What is this???

  • Better than Wedding Dress of Tae Yangazdedum

  • We need more artists like Webb in Christian music today. Too much Hillsong and easy listening stuff for my taste.

  • Tae Yang Wedding Dress is better (:

  • @ToFuStrife you've got to be kidding they're no where even close to being similar.

  • Thanks for posting this. TREMENDOUS!

  • love this song...and he is amazing in concert!!!

  • Love how this song is based off of Genesis 39

  • @IndianOutlawWooster er, what?

  • Don't get the love for this guy musically.

  • OMGoodness - this is soooo right on......JESUS your love!

  • An awesome song!!!!!!

  • good job! you're very good :)

  • I want to see him live so badly, but he doesn't come south of nashville much.

  • it will be really good if you will record a CD.......

  • He actually has five studio albums and one live album. This song is on his debut, She Must and Shall Go Free. I strongly recommend picking them all up, Derek is an extremely talented and insightful songwriter.

  • Just to add some more info about this song, its not only about the church and hosea though thats definitely a large part of it. This song is also a reaction to Bruce Wilkinson's "the prayer of jabez". Which was basically supposed to be a prayer that you say at certain intervals for a certain amount of days and then God will fill your life with all the blessings you want. Kinda on the level of God as a vending machine.

  • Just to mention a part of the song near the beginning: "read between the lines to look for blessings in disguise, to make me handsome rich and wise" is what Bruce Wilkinson did when he "found" this prayer of jabez to "unlock blessings" for people who pray it. All the other words of the song will start to make more sense in this context. Hope that explains more.

  • The reference to the word "whore" comes straight out of the bible. See the book of Hosea 4:14. It is completely scriptural. I wish all of those who consider this to be "controversial" would please get real. This word is translated differently in the NIV so as not to "offend" anyone probably.

  • also in ezekiel 16.

  • its all over the prophetic books, and its about as good as song as their could be to describe much of the american "church" today.

  • @kambala84 348924230% agreed!

  • I completely agree, I see the words as placing a more direct pointing onto our indifferent relation toward GOD as believers, and how we keep replacing HIM with worldly things.

  • @alabaster07 NIV " Nearly Inspired Version" NASB or ESB are best IMO...word for word translation from the original Greek....cant go wrong there :)

  • @Herfer What are you talking about right here? This is even related to this video.

  • @rehproductions it was a reply to another post, if you read that other post it will connect the dots :)

  • If you could love me as a wife and for my wedding gift, your life should that be all ill ever need or is there more im looking for and should i read between the lines and look for blessings in disguise

to make me handsome, rich, and wise is that really what you want (chorus) i am a whore i do confess but i put you on just like a wedding dress and i run down the aisle im a prodigal with no way home but i put you on just like a ring of gold and i run down the aisle to you

  • Derek is the kind of guy that you just want to stand near hoping that some of what he has will rub off on you. Of course, it's like anything where you want to result without doing the work... What we need is available to us, but still, Derek Webb is a wonderful human being.

  • There is alot of honesty in this song... Honesty is not always easy to hear though.

  • Beautiful song. Not so much of a believer anymore, but regardless this song gets to me.

  • not so much a believer, but your name is "JesusFreak"? lik

  • This song makes me ball as well...

    because I'm a whore I do confess...

But my Groom, Jesus, forgives me every time!

  • bawl

  • Just got his new cd....(clearly I still love his older stuff too :P )...very interesting, a little different from previous cds. I'd say favorites so far are Heaven and Jena and Jimmy....any thoughts on the new cd?

  • Can. Not. Wait. Until Tuesday when his new album comes out!! :) Stockholm Syndrome!

  • Amazing song, fantastic artist. This is everything CCM should be (and everything it's not right now).

  • @luckystar007 you are spot on..one of the most honest songs ever written.

  • @luckystar007 - I think you might be missing the point. 'CCM' is one huge corporate whore who has her home in Nashville. 'CCM' cannot and therefore will not ever produce such, honest, thought-provoking music such as this. It's the truth.

  • @luckystar007 I concur.

  • Oh, and to all the people on here, it's not sad! It's beautiful! It's sad that we choose sin instead of Jesus like a bride would choose another man instead of her husband, but it's beautiful because we put Jesus like a wedding dress, we put him on to make us clean, purified and beautiful, and we run down the isle to him. We seek him when we're covered by him.

This song sounds like it's about even though we're disgraceful, Jesus still loves us like a lover loves their bride unconditionally.

  • Whether it's sad or not, it makes me bawl. End of story.

  • That song is amazing. It's beautiful. It's so beautiful.

  • Its sad to think that thats exactly what is happening for most people and their relationship with god.

  • spurgeon said, if we think of what we've vowed to be and of what we have become, we may weep whole showers of grief.

  • Don't you all realize that as Christians we are all whores running after everything else but our bride Jesus. Money< Fame. women. we have other gods in our lives. Oh for the strength to stay true tor bride Jesus.

  • It takes a real man to say that he's a whore when he really is one, though the context in this song is about being a Christian "playing the field".

  • I think the song is about a lot more than playing the field.

  • whenever i hear this song, i think of hosea, where God tells hosea to marry a prostitute, and he falls in love with one and gets married, but she still runs off to all these other guys, and God said that is how the isrealites were acting. and it's still how Christians are today. because God provides for us so magnificently, but we spend our time with anything but him.

  • Its sad to think that he's talking about the church and how thats how we've become with God.

  • That's how we've always been I think.

  • Love this song : )

  • Woww :)

This is Amazingg. If it was recorded in a studio it would sound AMAZING!

  • It was, buy the album.

  • best song ever!! He is a lyrical master..

  • THIS IS SUCH AN AMAZING VIDEO!

  • hey becky it matt and COME ON PEOPLE CAN THIS MAKE IT TO 100,000 views?

  • done. :)

  • hmm, whats the name of hsi album and where can i buy it? :DD want it so badly

  • the name of this album is "she must and shall go free" its on i tunes

  • As a "whore" and "prodigal" he ran from Him first. he is talking about, claiming salvation while not following Jesus's leading from there, believing but still following our flesh. We put on the white dress say thanx and run... but these temporal things cannot buy the Jealous Love He has for His bride... so we put on the dress and RUN TO HIM :'-) i luv it

  • I think about a wedding day when I hear this song. the bride walks slowly, beautifuly to the front. His visual of the church like a bride running down the aisle is insanely thought provoking

  • This is a song about God's wonderful forgiveness. It's saying that even when we mess up, we can go back to God and become pure again in Him. I love this song =]

  • I believe this was an early recording of the song (if it weren't the crowd would have gone wild as soon as he introduced it).... so he's unpolished singing it, and it's poorly recorded "live". The album version is excellent.

  • This song is such a good song... people don't even realize how universal it is. we are all whores if you think about it. we put things before God, many things... It's painful, this song brought me to tears when i first thought about it. It makes God so much more amazing though if you think about it

  • is someone know his beautiful version of "take to the world " can you put in a video ,if yo like and know

  • i seem to always need to hear this song when I click it.

  • hhhhhmm yes that is a good song

  • love him!

  • Ezekiel 16... Derek Webb is the Stuff!!!

  • With one hand in a pot of gold, and the other in your side...

O God, I just pray maybe we can begin to understand what this means.

  • YES

  • best lyricist since bob dylan!

  • "I am a whore I confess, but I put [Jesus] on just like a wedding dress"

These are some some of the most beautiful lyrics I have ever heard

  • i have never heard a song with more meaning! This song has helped me sooo much! So True!

  • idk if i'm just dumb but i'm missing the meaning of this songs lyrics i get the general gyst of the song but idk

  • You should watch the intro to the Wedding Dress, it explains a lot of the background to the song.

  • i see thanks

  • anyone know the guitar tabs for this song?

  • It's really quite simple actually, Capo 4 in this instance, but his original is in Capo 3.

The chords used are C Am F and a type of B, basically use the shape of Am then take away your middle and ring finger and put the middle on the 2nd fret of the 5th string. That chord is used going from the verse to the chorus, and in the chorus. In the bridge it gets altered, add your ring finger to the 3rd fret of the 6th string. To do the riff play around with your middle finger on the C and F.

  • Hey bud, I've always understood it as a bass walkdown from C, which would make it the B bass in a Gsus. That's always made the most sense to me, because he also uses the Gsus without the B in the bridge (Gsus-no 3rd), rather than saying the chord is altered.

  • i love this song...it just makes me think so much because it is right!!

  • don't the original words say "i run down the aisle TO You"?

  • ah...i see

  • Yeah. I'm planning my wedding. These words like my ones. I would like to hear them during....

  • amazing words...

  • great song very fun to learn on guitar and excellent writing

  • "By the call of a lover so less wild" .... Isn't that so true? We are so satisfied by things on earth, I don't realise how much more awesome, how much more, "wild" God, Himself actually is.

  • wow .. amazing song!! I am floored!

  • what a song... ezekiel 16.

  • i hate my life! it is the worst life you would want 2 live! hate mother! who is never satiuficed wit wat she has got! i just want to leasve and ran as far a way as possible! and this song describs right wat i am going through!!!!!!!!!

  • Hang in there and trust in god. I promise things will be okay.

  • i love this song!

    genius writing!

  • sweet Casino

  • Listen to this song and read Francine Rivers "Redeeming Love". They both explore the story of Hosea and Gomer

  • Oh my goodness! Yes indeed! I love that book so much!

  • Too true. If you don't know what the false teaching of The Jabez book are, read the scriptures, read, learn and discern!) I know a lot of people in rehab because of such false "name it, claim it" teaching. Life *is* hard, but God is good!

  • Whoever said "I always look at myself with this song. I am the cheating bride. I swear to love and serve God all my life, and then I run after sin and worldly desires over the Will of my Savior. "One hand in a pot of gold and the other in Your side." I crucify Him every day. I am eager to get married but incapable of fidelity." I agree with you 100%. You could not have worded my struggles better.

  • love, love. :-)

  • great song all around

whether you search it for a deep meaning or not just a good tune to hear

  • Man, after coming across all the absolutely horrid covers of this song it's such a breath of fresh air to hear Derek do it like only he can...

  • GET THIS ALBUM! It's the realsest thing Ive EVER heard. Simply beutiful.

  • i totally agree!

    hes simply AMAZING!!!!

  • Wow what a totally amazing song. This totally reminds me of CS Lewis' idea of people going for mud pies when they could have the beach vacation - we are far too easily satisfied.

  • A truly inspirational song.

This is for anyone that the words "NOOMA , Rob Bell, Mars Hill Church, or The Emergent Church" ring a bell

    facebook(dot)com/group(dot)php?gid=10550799883

  • Watch the intro to this performance. This song is written in response to Derek's problems with the book 'The Prayer of Jabez'. It has to do with the church caring more about money and the things of this world, and whoring out the good things of God for things that are corrupt and vile. Everyone is asking what or who it's about. It's about you. Us.

  • Thank you Derek for endorsing Ron Paul for President. And for putting out great music that challenges us at the deepest level.

  • Derek Webb is awesome

  • You have a new fan in Scotland, Wow This song is hard hitting accurate and moving, keep up the great work ! God Bless you. Graeme.

  • i like this song but the song "church" is MUCH better!!

  • wot made u do that ????????????

  • i LOVE this song sooo much.

  • I always look at myself with this song. I am the cheating bride. I swear to love and serve God all my life, and then I run after sin and worldly desires over the Will of my Savior. "One hand in a pot of gold and the other in Your side." I crucify Him every day. I am eager to get married but incapable of fidelity.

  • you totally got the point of the song. he's not trying to make you feel guilty, but to help us realize our innate human nature.

  • I've met Derek Webb before. He's an awesome musician. I don't think that he could have told the story of the church any better than this song.

  • the song is plainly about the adulteress church, and how Christian culture will "take anything that comes down the pike" and then won't discern if it's true or not - that's from the mouth of Mr. Webb himself.

  • really interesting metaphore

  • Also remember that MUCH of this song was written as a much-needed rebuke of the "word faith" prosperity heresy. "Because money cannot buy a husband's jealous eye when you have knowingly deceived his wife" refers to the righteous wrath that Jesus will pour out on prosperity teachers who are deceiving the church in the last decades.

  • Actually, specifically, it was written after he saw Bruce Wilkison promoting his "prayer of Jabez" and was very bothered by "formulas" that God supposedly has to follow if we pray a certain prayer or do a certain thing. Not only does that put God in a box, it makes us spiritual whores, running after the latest "god-fashion".

  • It's a song about how the physical body conflicts so heavily with the spiritual. We tend to get so caught up in stupid mainstream Christianity that we forget that we're actually married. We are whores in the sense that we're cheating on our bridegroom with stupid things such as popular media, money, or personal relationships.

  • Well said. What's sad is how few Christians (or people that THINK they are Christians) have any concept that the lyrics of this song are founded on the core doctrine of the Church: Christ died for undeserving sinners who constantly stray, yet still He died for us anyway. That's grace.

  • It's like the story in Hosea. We have been going over that in the college campus ministry I go to the most. It is a really good series so far and I believe that the rest of the series will be good to. It's about Hosea.

  • I think it is more talking about how Satan stands and tries to buy our affection and distract us from God, but he can never pay the price that will be required of him when Christ turns his Jeolous eye for us on Satan and also punishes him for distracting Christians from thier first true life, the Messiah, Yeshua Bar Yoshua

  • great song. no way of going around it, its biblical based. lot of meaning. also great guitar part.

  • what an amazing song about the church

  • i think this song has a lot of meaning to me since this song seems to be talking about adultery and other stuff like that and i was married once and my husband cheated on me so i think this song is telling us that money cant but a husbands jealous eye and that means that when you get married if you are truly commited to that person you are supposed to be jealous of that person when they get around the opposite sex so i know what derek is saying

  • This has been some of my best translations...

    Literal:

You cannot use money to make the husband of the woman you decieved care about his wife again after you decieved her. (HUH?)

    Allegorial:

"Money cannot purchase God's protectiveness over your(the bride's) life when you (the bride) have purposefully sinned against the bride (body of Christ and yourself!) (HUH?!)
