Bill. There is a massive difference between being slapped on the butt and getting beaten with a stick until you pass out from pain. Or being slapped in the ear and getting a burst eardrum. I know because this is exactly the type of thing that used to be done in my part of the country. And it wasn't just priests that did it. Plenty of nuns were just as cruel and sadistic to the children in their charge. Yet one doesn't hear much about them. They deserve exposure too.

this guy crys foul.... what a butt head.... its nothing about the church but the children that were affected.... the child should come first rather then the image of the priest or church...
This asshole defends the catholic church,God help them.So its all an anti-Catholic attack on the great priests of the one true faith. What an obscene wanker.Hope he dies of anal cancer.
Hey Holy Fathers of Catholic Church, do me a favor, while preaching to my parents in sermons a few minutes later, can you just wash your hands and pants to get off our congregation of sperms and anal hairs??
Funny that my friends say that your delivery of sermons in the Catholic Church has the breath of .......get this .......... meat balls !!??
Don't worry if police are coming after you pedophile priests, bishops & cardinals, S.American Nazi will reciprocate and hide u from justice too.
What an evil little man. It's almost as if he says these abhorrent things for the sole purpose of drawing the scandal to his own person in order to spare the Church some heat.
The Catholic church has continued over the centuries despite a history replete with scandals and corruption; with violence, greed and the worship of power. The church preaches humility and sacrifice while flaunting its wealth and authority. The colossal hypocrisy of that institution is without equal and its control over the faithful through fear, shame and guilt is absolute.

Bill Donohue is a horrid, vile and disgusting human being. He is a remorseless prick that only feels charitable to the rapist priests and "Mother Church" that protects him. Even the Pope is now implicated in covering up various acts of child rape. Great church you have there, Bill, but clearly, in your case, you joined the right one.
@felsen1234 I listen to him and I understand what cops mean when they say they feel creeped out when they talk to serial killers. The man makes my flesh crawl.
@mp1323 Bill Donohue *does* represent the Catholic Church, he is the president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights so what he says is in fact representative of the church.
If you don't wish to be associated with it then either demand his resignation or protest by leaving the church, that's what I would do if I were represented by that knob Donohue.
@Baldurpet look i respect your views man but i will never leave the church over a bunch of some asshole "priests" becouse you can take away the priests, churches and so on but catholism is in the heart therefore my faith is strong, now does that make me a bad person no hell i'm not even a reigious man all but all i want this world is for my family to live in peace just like yours.
Listen to Donohue talk. His argument is that "trivial forms of abuse" shouldnt be included in the same report as the more severe abuses. How could child abuse ever be "trivial?" Psycho mother fucker.
If Bill Donohue got grandchildren then he needs be put in jail because if inappropriate kiss or tourch on child is not abuse then this man is so sick and needs to got to hell . Can you see why people hate religion
honestly i wonder if he is touching his kids? He keeps running around this issue and he honestly doesnt know what hes talking about. He keeps talking about what happened in long island as if that means anything in ireland. he believes that because he wasnt molested that somehow he knows more than people who were
The bible says justice isnt just speaking out about wrong, it is fighting against it
Shame on you Bill Donohue. Not another dime from me. Better that scandal arise than evil persist. You should do more to get the homosexual perderasts out of the Chuech. People have been quiet to long. If we quit giving to the Church then I bet things would change in a hurry. The administrative Church stinks. Onlythe faithful will survive.Sally Jo True
a. pedophiles are not gay men. gay men engage in consenting relationships with other adult gay men. pedophiles abuse children of both sexes. See the difference?
b. bill donohue, and indeed the pope, have been trying to shift the blame for all this onto gay men, and having been trying to "get them out" of the church. yet another complete failure to take responsibility.
c. homophobia is a completely unhelpful response to all this, on anyone's part.
Another clue is the fact that 1987 the Vatican took out a liability insurance for clergy abuse to stem any future financial loss. They knew very well what was going on.
This is unfair to the millions of kids placed in Catholic Churches who are abused by these sick priests. He is trivializing these kids horrific situations. It's a shame that there isn't hell for him to rot in.
As regards to comparing priests to prison inmates, here is another point: not everybody in prison are criminals ( wrongful convictions ) but some of them have engaged in homosexual activities. Not all crimes are due to a pathology, but religious belief is certainly a mental disease which causes the beliver to suffer hallucinations, manias etc. A study in 2005 concluded that "the least devout nations were the least dysfunctional" with murder and rape having a higher prevalence in devout nations.
Gregory Paul stated that his study was not definitive (so people should not make conclusions solely based on it).
On the ''other side'':
The Journals of Gerontology Series A - studied over 3000 elderly patients concluding that religion had a positive affect correlative on overall health and longevity.
D'Souza, R.F. and A. Rodrigo (in a psychiatric study in 2004) - found that patients who practiced religion had fewer relapses into negative behaviors than those who didnt.
The first study: 1.4% atheists or no religious association, social religious life i.e. church going account for some of the
result. The second study, are you citing the one with this conclusion:"SACBT can aid therapists in providing "whole person" care and achieving better global outcomes for patients with psychological
The American Journal of Psychiatry found that patients suffering from depression who had religious faith recovered faster than those who little or none at all.
Let´s put this into context of time: The letter from 1962 cover a long time span during which these crimes have been covered up. Analysis of 1962 letter: ! It´s immidiatly obvious that the document was specifically designed to silence the child victims.Any attempt by the victim to communicate the abuse to authorities results in excommunication for life. Preliminaries 11 ( restrained by perpetual silence). Preliminaries 13 ( accuser must be silenced ) Title 1-18 ( excommunication ).
Title 1-21 ( secrecy till death ). Title 1- The first knowledge of the crime - paragraph 23 ( threaten the victim ) 2. The peadophile priest is treated in a protective and opposite manner. The process- chapter 3_52" In every way the judge is to remember that it is never right for him to bind the accused by an oath to tell the truth." ( But notice that it´s mandatory to bind the victim by an oath to tell the truth.)
A person accused not being bound to speak respects that person's right (e.g. to remain silent), while the person making the accusation must tell the truth in order for the case to be handled fairly in the first place.
How ridiculous! The paragraph says "In every way the judge is to remember that it is never right for him to bind the accused by an oath to tell the truth." It doesn´t mean the accused can remain silent.
The lack of an oath does imply the accused choice to speak or not. If there is no oath to tell the truth, the testimony of the accused does not have the same weight as the accuser's account of the incidence(s).
The choice of the accused to speak on his own behalf or not is implied (not imposed) by the statement.
The cover-ups that happened in the industrial schools, Boston and other places are properly characterized as scandals. It would have been better for everyone involved if the civil authorities were notified and charges were pressed.
Don´t be sneaky, I will ask you again: how many priests accused for pedophilia have been handed over to the police by priests who had been notified about said crimes?
In every case of abuse the authorities should have been informed. The bishops were wrong, not because they were evil, but because they believed (on the advice of professionals in the field of psychology) that pedophilia was curable or treatable to the extent that a priest could return to ministry. The John Vianney Center was one of the places where an accused priest was sent before being reassigned. This doesn't mean that the bishops should not compensate people who were victimized.
(continued) Some of the priests were after some known instances of abuse sent for treatment but when the therapists
informed the clergy that the priest in question wasn´t responding to treatment, the clergy still decided to let the pedo priest continue his career in a parish were he had not (yet) abused anyone.
In most cases the priest wasn´t sent for treatment but was sent directly to another parish.
The bishops that reassigned the priests against the advice of therapists were culpable in the danger that they placed other children in. They were wrong in doing so. That is one of the reasons why the Benedict XVI (on behalf of the Catholic Church) apologized for the scandals on more than one occasion. In regard to this, more needs to be done.
Few if any abusive priests were turned in to the police, at least in the U.S. for the reasons previously stated. It was the wrong decision that benefited no one.
Title 3- Penalties-63 The greatest penalty possible to the pedophile priest found guilty by the outlined tribunal is being reduced to "lay-brother", and only done when it is considered that there is absolutely no hope of recovery. Hence the perpetual transfers of peadophile priests and multimillion dollar pay outs. Title 4-67 If the peadophile priest is found guilty by the tribunal, he must be transferred.
A priest cannot be ''reduced'' to a lay brother (unless he is a monk in the first place), but can be defrocked (fired from ministry) as a penalty. There is a big difference between a lay person and a lay brother.
If the bishops applied the penalty (as recommended by the document) to pedophile priests, it is likely that there would have been fewer victims.
Quoting from penalties section:63, from 1962 letter: "To the greatest penalty of degradation, there can be added for a religious who is accused the reduction to the status of a lay-brother." Notice how it says "religious" not monk or priest. To be defrocked is being reduced to lay-brother, and if the penalty has been applied then that has potentially increased the number of victims as many lay-brothers worked in orphanages.
The term ''religious'' in the Catholic Church means those belonging to religious order such as the Benedictines (monks) or Franciscans (friars - similar to monks) - not all priests belong to religious orders (this is why I wrote ''unless he is a monk in the first place'').
It should also be noted that all the lay brothers who molested children in the orphanages were not defrocked priests.
''To be defrocked is being reduced to lay-brother, and if the penalty has been applied then that has potentially increased the number of victims as many lay-brothers worked in orphanages.''
The supposed potential increase in the number of victims was not caused by something that did not happen in the first place (e.g. priests being ''demoted'' to lay-brothers). This was thegalwegian's argument; that is why it does not ''hold up''.
There is not connection between the wrong decisions of the officials and the documents cited. Otherwise, there would have been at least one bull of excommunication for a person pressing charges against a priest for child abuse, which of course, there isn't.
No because the documents clearly says to say to victims that they are not to talk to anyone outside of the hearings and that includes the police. The threat was there to make sure the church´s reputation wouldn´t be dirtied, for the same reason pedo priests were moved around to different parishes, so the victims and their families would think that something was being done.
The silence is about the proceedings of the hearings, not a victim telling anyone about the incident of abuse that occurred. Again, reality points to the proper understanding of the letter (addressed to the bishops). Among the thousands of victims, throughout the entire world, over the last 40 years, has any one of them been excommunicated for telling the police, going on Oprah, blogging in the internet, telling their parents or therapists about being abuse been excommunicated for doing so?
You´r right, priests sexual abuses was covered up and priests sent to different parishes where they could meet new victims and continue molesting children. For example James A. Porter of Fall River
Diocese, Boston, pleaded guilty to 42counts of sexual assaults.
In over 40 years since the letter was written, no one who has pressed criminal charges against a priest or spoken on outlets about being victimized by priests (even the ones who made false accusations) or sued the church has been excommunicated. This is because the document is only about church proceedings. It does not address criminal law enforcement because its authority does not extend that far nor is it even implied.
What a confused person you are. The letter clearly states that acusers are under the threat of excommunication, the reason anyone hasn´t been is because it was an empty threat, designed to scare the victims to silence so that the reputation of the church wouldn´t be damaged.
If excommunication were a dangling threat to hold over the peoples heads, it wouldn't have been in a letter strictly intended for the bishops. If one believes that the letter tells bishops to merely threaten victims, it would have happened. So far (40 years), there have been no complaints that any church official (privately or even publicly) threatening any victim with excommunication for going to the police about sex crime perpetrated by a priest.
A priest who commits crime against children should be incarcerated just like everyone else. The cover-ups and shuffling around of priests that happened was deplorable (especially in the industrial schools in Ireland). But overstating the situation is not productive. One pedophile is too many, but there is no evidence (statistically) that the Catholic Church was not and is not ''filled with pedophile'' or sexually deviant priests.
There is no evidence yet that I have found, I am however free to speculate using numerous articles and books describing the effects on the mind of repressing or suppressing sexuality which evidently leads to abnormal behavior; drug abuse and sex abuse for example. The fact that priests who where found to having abused children where not reported to the police but instead moved around to different parishes meant they could abuse again so surely pedophile priest have more victims than other pedos.
The shuffling around made it possible for those pedophile priests to victimize more people, but that doesn't mean that more priests are abusers compared (percentage wise) to the general population. If there are no studies that prove that Catholic priests suffer (disproportionately) from a number of psychological/moral problems, maybe one should wait until such studies are done so as to avoid the possibility of misinforming/misleading others (e.g. Catholic priests and sexual repression).
Yes let us all give up our right to free speech which includes speculating and theorising from available data so that nobody gets any ideas on what studies to iniate...
Speculations should be worded as such (''I think'', "I speculate'', ''I wonder if'', etc.) - this is what stimulates inquiry into the facts. When people word speculation as if it were fact, they do so possibly at the expense of defaming the character of others (e.g. ''priests are sexually repressed men who can't make decisions for themselves'' - to paraphrase), misleading others (with misunderstood information) and simply being wrong.
Well priests are sexually repressed (voluntarily up to a point since they haven´t all understood the likely consequences of complete sexual repression i.e. celibacy ), and they can´t make decisions for themselves, they are very restricted within the doctrines etc. as are all who are religious or otherwise dogmatic. Considering what we know of what sexual repression leads to and so long as the church won´t acknowledge actual science in the matter we are free to make up our minds as we see fit.
For some reason the red fails to realise that children have been, and still are in some cases, forced to go along with parents religion the parent-child loyalty means that when the children grow up they will rarely question their own belief system.
With human rights now dictating, more than church dogma, reality, more and more people are choosing for themselves. Behavior restrictions that
are often not healthy and possible to follow. Such as celibacy that do equal total sexual repression
For some reason thegalwegian equates the practice of religion with a disease. Parents force their children to do all kinds of things for their own benefit (e.g. go to school, see the doctor, etc.). The practice of religion (not the abuse of it) has not been proven to be detrimental to the overall health and well-being of individuals, but seems to demonstrate the opposite (Canadian Journal of Psychology, Harold Koenig, vol. 5, 2009).
With over 8 years of study, most sensible people can figure out for themselves if they are fit to live a celibate life or not. This is the case as most people who choose celibacy as a lifestyle (not just among Catholics) are psychologically healthy people (the majority of Catholic priests included).
Any statistic to verify the claim that there is a disproportionate number of priests suffering from those problems and research that confirms that such problems are cause by celibacy?
The priests that say that they didn't get enough education about celibacy is a good indicator that such a life can be lived in a healthy manner. Of course, this criticism isn't coming from all priests (remember that all priests were not trained in the same place).
They think that the reason is that they didn´t get enough education about how to handle celibacy, it is a good indicator that they are having problems because of celibacy.
The major difference being that husbands are allowed to have sex, in most cases have had sex before marriage. Catholic priests are not even allowed to masturbate.
Something which is not just repressing their sexuality but also leads to physical health problems. So that comparison is just laughable.
Pedophilia is a criminal pathology, narrowing it down simply as a crime associated only with sex or a lack thereof is completely incorrect. If it were otherwise, very few pedophiles would be married, sexually active or sexually experienced men. Of course, reality reveals otherwise.
Only a professional can evaluate what is causing a person to have drug, sexual or gambling problems. I wonder how many priests thegalwegian has interviewed before making such a ''clear'' definitive assessment.
(continued) But we both read, and I could bring up studies that defend my position, and so can you.The difference, 1: being that you refuse to even admit that
celibacy and sexual repression are linked. 2: You told me that I needed to "take the course over" because I
once misspelt philosophy.Well right back at you given all the info in this comment.
The alleged link between religious celibacy and pedophilia (as well as sexual repression) has not been positively identified by any study referred to on this comment page. If thegalwegian's theory was true, among married clergy of other Christian denominations, the percentage of pedophiles would be much lower than Catholic clergy. Which of course, it isn't.
Any healthy thing or practice ''may'' be a contributing factor to delusions. It all depends on the person's psychological health and use (or misuse) of that subject in the first place.
Replace belief and prayer to an invisible magic man who supposedly sees and hears everything you think, feel and do ( paranoia anyone?) with positive thinking and get better results.
Bill Donohue is a hack lawyer, hired by the US Church to defend the indefensible against all comers. The purpose of the Catholic League is to scare away ANY criticism of the Church organization & its Administrators - including allegations of its criminal activities.
A lawyer who only serves ONE client - rabidly - by using all manner of loopholes, deceit & legal trickery is...
You shouldn't be concerned about Peter Griffin and Seth Macfarlane right now but you should be more concerned about the state of your own poor demented soul.
Bill Donohue is a disgusting man. The way in which he trivializes this matter is repugnant and revolting, he should be ashamed of himself but I know he won't be.
If nothing else, consider how fast the Catholic Church had been shut down and sued were it not a religious institution.
I was raised in Ireland from the late 40's through the early 60's. I was educated by the Sisters of Mercy, The Christian Brothers Schools and the Jesuits. I remember them as holy and sincere Christ like teachers. They did use the leather strap on us but only when we earned it. I do not question for a moment the victims of child abuse on this video and my heart goes out to them. May Almighty God have mercy on their abusers and grant the victims His healing touch but not all clergy were abusers.
No true Priest, Brother or Nun who is committed to serving our holy God would abuse a child, it is contrary to a holy calling. But unfortunately there are degenerate sick wolves in sheep's clothing who have brought shame on the Church of Christ their very nature and actions are diametrically opposed to a holy calling. To the victims I plead, please try to forgive the confused cowards who were afraid to report these filthy abusers help us to bring healing back to the Mystical Body of Christ

A study in 2005 concluded that "the least devout nations were the least dysfunctional" with murder and rape having a higher prevalence in devout nations.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
The study was authored by social scientist Gregory Paul, published in Journal of Religion and Society. ( 7-2005 )
thegalwegian 2 years ago
Gregory Paul stated that his study was not definitive (so people should not make conclusions solely based on it).
On the ''other side'':
The Journals of Gerontology Series A - studied over 3000 elderly patients concluding that religion had a positive affect correlative on overall health and longevity.
D'Souza, R.F. and A. Rodrigo (in a psychiatric study in 2004) - found that patients who practiced religion had fewer relapses into negative behaviors than those who didnt.

Preliminaries 13 ( accuser must be silenced ) Title 1-18 ( excommunication ).
thegalwegian 2 years ago
Title 1-21 ( secrecy till death ). Title 1- The first knowledge of the crime - paragraph 23 ( threaten the victim ) 2. The peadophile priest is treated in a protective and opposite manner. The process- chapter 3_52" In every way the judge is to remember that it is never right for him to bind the accused by an oath to tell the truth." ( But notice that it´s mandatory to bind the victim by an oath to tell the truth.)
thegalwegian 2 years ago
A person accused not being bound to speak respects that person's right (e.g. to remain silent), while the person making the accusation must tell the truth in order for the case to be handled fairly in the first place.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
How ridiculous! The paragraph says "In every way the judge is to remember that it is never right for him to bind the accused by an oath to tell the truth." It doesn´t mean the accused can remain silent.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
The lack of an oath does imply the accused choice to speak or not. If there is no oath to tell the truth, the testimony of the accused does not have the same weight as the accuser's account of the incidence(s).
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
If so it would in the document have said "In every way the judge is to remember that it never right for him to
bind the accused by an oath to respond to the accusation".
How many priests accused for pedophilia have been handed over to the police by priests who have been notified about
said crimes? Before the Boston scandal erupted?
thegalwegian 2 years ago
The choice of the accused to speak on his own behalf or not is implied (not imposed) by the statement.
The cover-ups that happened in the industrial schools, Boston and other places are properly characterized as scandals. It would have been better for everyone involved if the civil authorities were notified and charges were pressed.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
Don´t be sneaky, I will ask you again: how many priests accused for pedophilia have been handed over to the police by priests who had been notified about said crimes?
thegalwegian 2 years ago
In every case of abuse the authorities should have been informed. The bishops were wrong, not because they were evil, but because they believed (on the advice of professionals in the field of psychology) that pedophilia was curable or treatable to the extent that a priest could return to ministry. The John Vianney Center was one of the places where an accused priest was sent before being reassigned. This doesn't mean that the bishops should not compensate people who were victimized.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
(continued) Some of the priests were after some known instances of abuse sent for treatment but when the therapists
informed the clergy that the priest in question wasn´t responding to treatment, the clergy still decided to let the pedo priest continue his career in a parish were he had not (yet) abused anyone.
In most cases the priest wasn´t sent for treatment but was sent directly to another parish.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
The bishops that reassigned the priests against the advice of therapists were culpable in the danger that they placed other children in. They were wrong in doing so. That is one of the reasons why the Benedict XVI (on behalf of the Catholic Church) apologized for the scandals on more than one occasion. In regard to this, more needs to be done.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
Interesting that you won´t answer a direct question directly. Have you had this discussion during a session of
confession? The crimes were not reported because the priests did not want them to be known to the public/
a few didn´t think sexual abuse of minors was a big deal.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
Few if any abusive priests were turned in to the police, at least in the U.S. for the reasons previously stated. It was the wrong decision that benefited no one.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
Title 3- Penalties-63 The greatest penalty possible to the pedophile priest found guilty by the outlined tribunal is being reduced to "lay-brother", and only done when it is considered that there is absolutely no hope of recovery. Hence the perpetual transfers of peadophile priests and multimillion dollar pay outs. Title 4-67 If the peadophile priest is found guilty by the tribunal, he must be transferred.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
A priest cannot be ''reduced'' to a lay brother (unless he is a monk in the first place), but can be defrocked (fired from ministry) as a penalty. There is a big difference between a lay person and a lay brother.
If the bishops applied the penalty (as recommended by the document) to pedophile priests, it is likely that there would have been fewer victims.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
Quoting from penalties section:63, from 1962 letter: "To the greatest penalty of degradation, there can be added for a religious who is accused the reduction to the status of a lay-brother." Notice how it says "religious" not monk or priest. To be defrocked is being reduced to lay-brother, and if the penalty has been applied then that has potentially increased the number of victims as many lay-brothers worked in orphanages.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
The term ''religious'' in the Catholic Church means those belonging to religious order such as the Benedictines (monks) or Franciscans (friars - similar to monks) - not all priests belong to religious orders (this is why I wrote ''unless he is a monk in the first place'').
It should also be noted that all the lay brothers who molested children in the orphanages were not defrocked priests.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
1:My argument still holds up.
2: Of course not and that is not what I argued.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
''To be defrocked is being reduced to lay-brother, and if the penalty has been applied then that has potentially increased the number of victims as many lay-brothers worked in orphanages.''
The supposed potential increase in the number of victims was not caused by something that did not happen in the first place (e.g. priests being ''demoted'' to lay-brothers). This was thegalwegian's argument; that is why it does not ''hold up''.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
Two of his fellow priests had been
informed of what Porter was doing by ten individuals
and had witnessed two instances of abuse ( one each).
They did nothing about it. Officials moving Porter
from parish to parish included then-monsignour
Medeiros who was also the one who moved John J.Geoghan
from parish to parish, enabling him to abuse up to
200 children.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
The officials were wrong in what they did.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
And you were wrong when you said "no one was ever forbidden or threatened with excommunication for making criminal
charges", you can pretend that there is no connection between the document and what priest said and did: threatening
with excommunication, settling outside of court etc.
Denial is not just a river in Egypt.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
There is not connection between the wrong decisions of the officials and the documents cited. Otherwise, there would have been at least one bull of excommunication for a person pressing charges against a priest for child abuse, which of course, there isn't.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
No because the documents clearly says to say to victims that they are not to talk to anyone outside of the hearings and that includes the police. The threat was there to make sure the church´s reputation wouldn´t be dirtied, for the same reason pedo priests were moved around to different parishes, so the victims and their families would think that something was being done.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
The silence is about the proceedings of the hearings, not a victim telling anyone about the incident of abuse that occurred. Again, reality points to the proper understanding of the letter (addressed to the bishops). Among the thousands of victims, throughout the entire world, over the last 40 years, has any one of them been excommunicated for telling the police, going on Oprah, blogging in the internet, telling their parents or therapists about being abuse been excommunicated for doing so?
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
You´r right, priests sexual abuses was covered up and priests sent to different parishes where they could meet new victims and continue molesting children. For example James A. Porter of Fall River
Diocese, Boston, pleaded guilty to 42counts of sexual assaults.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
In over 40 years since the letter was written, no one who has pressed criminal charges against a priest or spoken on outlets about being victimized by priests (even the ones who made false accusations) or sued the church has been excommunicated. This is because the document is only about church proceedings. It does not address criminal law enforcement because its authority does not extend that far nor is it even implied.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
What a confused person you are. The letter clearly states that acusers are under the threat of excommunication, the reason anyone hasn´t been is because it was an empty threat, designed to scare the victims to silence so that the reputation of the church wouldn´t be damaged.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
If excommunication were a dangling threat to hold over the peoples heads, it wouldn't have been in a letter strictly intended for the bishops. If one believes that the letter tells bishops to merely threaten victims, it would have happened. So far (40 years), there have been no complaints that any church official (privately or even publicly) threatening any victim with excommunication for going to the police about sex crime perpetrated by a priest.

ArrogantCancerian 2 years ago
hey redgoldbluephantom it would of been safer for those kids had they been in a prison and not in a church filled with pedophile priest!!!!
rock9711 2 years ago
A priest who commits crime against children should be incarcerated just like everyone else. The cover-ups and shuffling around of priests that happened was deplorable (especially in the industrial schools in Ireland). But overstating the situation is not productive. One pedophile is too many, but there is no evidence (statistically) that the Catholic Church was not and is not ''filled with pedophile'' or sexually deviant priests.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
There is no evidence yet that I have found, I am however free to speculate using numerous articles and books describing the effects on the mind of repressing or suppressing sexuality which evidently leads to abnormal behavior; drug abuse and sex abuse for example. The fact that priests who where found to having abused children where not reported to the police but instead moved around to different parishes meant they could abuse again so surely pedophile priest have more victims than other pedos.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
The shuffling around made it possible for those pedophile priests to victimize more people, but that doesn't mean that more priests are abusers compared (percentage wise) to the general population. If there are no studies that prove that Catholic priests suffer (disproportionately) from a number of psychological/moral problems, maybe one should wait until such studies are done so as to avoid the possibility of misinforming/misleading others (e.g. Catholic priests and sexual repression).
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
Yes let us all give up our right to free speech which includes speculating and theorising from available data so that nobody gets any ideas on what studies to iniate...
thegalwegian 2 years ago
Speculations should be worded as such (''I think'', "I speculate'', ''I wonder if'', etc.) - this is what stimulates inquiry into the facts. When people word speculation as if it were fact, they do so possibly at the expense of defaming the character of others (e.g. ''priests are sexually repressed men who can't make decisions for themselves'' - to paraphrase), misleading others (with misunderstood information) and simply being wrong.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
Well priests are sexually repressed (voluntarily up to a point since they haven´t all understood the likely consequences of complete sexual repression i.e. celibacy ), and they can´t make decisions for themselves, they are very restricted within the doctrines etc. as are all who are religious or otherwise dogmatic. Considering what we know of what sexual repression leads to and so long as the church won´t acknowledge actual science in the matter we are free to make up our minds as we see fit.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
For some reason thegalwegian fails to realize that people choose (in most developed countries) to belong to and follow a religion.
The nature of religion implies behavior restrictions and doctrinal boundaries.
To repeat again, celibacy does not equal sexual repression.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
For some reason the red fails to realise that children have been, and still are in some cases, forced to go along with parents religion the parent-child loyalty means that when the children grow up they will rarely question their own belief system.
With human rights now dictating, more than church dogma, reality, more and more people are choosing for themselves. Behavior restrictions that
are often not healthy and possible to follow. Such as celibacy that do equal total sexual repression
thegalwegian 2 years ago
For some reason thegalwegian equates the practice of religion with a disease. Parents force their children to do all kinds of things for their own benefit (e.g. go to school, see the doctor, etc.). The practice of religion (not the abuse of it) has not been proven to be detrimental to the overall health and well-being of individuals, but seems to demonstrate the opposite (Canadian Journal of Psychology, Harold Koenig, vol. 5, 2009).
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
With over 8 years of study, most sensible people can figure out for themselves if they are fit to live a celibate life or not. This is the case as most people who choose celibacy as a lifestyle (not just among Catholics) are psychologically healthy people (the majority of Catholic priests included).
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
Obviously not:
thegalwegian 2 years ago
Obviously so, because most people who make such a commitment are not sexual criminals or display forms of sexual deviance.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
Obviously not because priests have other problems like
drinking, gambling etc more so than the rest of the
population. Priests have themselves said that they
haven´t received enough info or training to cope with
celibacy.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
Any statistic to verify the claim that there is a disproportionate number of priests suffering from those problems and research that confirms that such problems are cause by celibacy?
The priests that say that they didn't get enough education about celibacy is a good indicator that such a life can be lived in a healthy manner. Of course, this criticism isn't coming from all priests (remember that all priests were not trained in the same place).
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
A lot of them are caused by celibacy, yes.
They think that the reason is that they didn´t get enough education about how to handle celibacy, it is a good indicator that they are having problems because of celibacy.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
Celibacy does not cause pedophilia in the same way that an unattractive, boring wife does not cause her husband to be a serial rapist.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
The major difference being that husbands are allowed to have sex, in most cases have had sex before marriage. Catholic priests are not even allowed to masturbate.
Something which is not just repressing their sexuality but also leads to physical health problems. So that comparison is just laughable.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
Pedophilia is a criminal pathology, narrowing it down simply as a crime associated only with sex or a lack thereof is completely incorrect. If it were otherwise, very few pedophiles would be married, sexually active or sexually experienced men. Of course, reality reveals otherwise.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
It is clearly an indication that they are having problems regarding celibacy, nothing else.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
Only a professional can evaluate what is causing a person to have drug, sexual or gambling problems. I wonder how many priests thegalwegian has interviewed before making such a ''clear'' definitive assessment.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
(continued) But we both read, and I could bring up studies that defend my position, and so can you.The difference, 1: being that you refuse to even admit that
celibacy and sexual repression are linked. 2: You told me that I needed to "take the course over" because I
once misspelt philosophy.Well right back at you given all the info in this comment.
thegalwegian 2 years ago
The alleged link between religious celibacy and pedophilia (as well as sexual repression) has not been positively identified by any study referred to on this comment page. If thegalwegian's theory was true, among married clergy of other Christian denominations, the percentage of pedophiles would be much lower than Catholic clergy. Which of course, it isn't.
redgoldbluephantom 2 years ago
No conclusion as what mechanism/s has led to result of this study."For example, a century of socialogical theory and research suggests that the
association of religious involvement and physical health might be more closely
