We hand feed Chickadees and Nuthatches all the time, it's become a favorite hobby for us. Your mini documentary is awesome. How about making one for Nuthatches as well? I wish I could see baby chickadees....but they are nowhere to be seen. cheers from Canada
I had no idea what these birds were until today, I have several pairs in my back yard here in Iowa. They have nested in a iron pole in my yard with an opening that is no more than 2 inches wide. My son said he heard noises in this pole last week and we had to wait till dark to get a flash light to see her sitting in the pole about two feet down. This week there are two baby chicks so adorable. I've tried to take pics but it has been hard since using a flashlight and the size.
one of these little guys struck my window today. I had to sprint outside to save him from my cat. I put him in a tree and luckily he flew away after 10 minutes.
@powerofsonic they like suet (love it!) peanut butter if smeared on trees helps too. Their favorite food is the black oil sunflower seeds. They also like peanuts.
@powerofsonic they like suet, those square mesh styled feeders. They also like peanut butter and blackoil sunflowers are the most popular seeds that attract them.
@powerofsonic Well, it depends a lot on 1) where you live 2) what type of feeders you have 3) what type of feeders you have. If you live in the middle of the city, it'll take some time for chickadees to come, particularly when there isn't many trees around. In any case, they like black-oil sunflower seeds (buy it bags with only this type of seed--avoid "wild bird" mixes) and suet best.
we have a pair nesting in a box my dad made last year that had contained house wrens that year, but the chickadees took over this year. They sure are a wonder to behold!
I used to live in New York City , and there is a park there we my wife and I used to go and feed them. They will take food from the palm of your hand, and I would try to quickly pet their chests before they would fly away. Very soft!
Chickadees are cute little birds and I love hearing them say their name! Speaking as a Massachusetts native, our state made an excellent choice. I think I once read somewhere that Maine honored the chickadee because it helps the potato farmers by eating insect pests that can destroy the crops. And BTW, it is also the provincial bird of New Brunswick.
This is a delightful video, and seeing the cardinals with them is a beautiful bonus. Thanks, James!
These little guys are so fun! Like the mourning dove, if you can imitate their call well enough, they'll answer you back. Sounds weird, but I like talking with the birds :D
PLEASE DON'T feed birds via feeders!! These little guys over-feed themselves and often that causes their stomachs and intestines to clog whereby they die agonizing deaths!!
I actually was feeding birds here a couple of years ago in the winter and I didn't understand why I would see dead ones now and then until I had a clear dream of a beautiful little bird in a straightjacket and it was pooping out lots of seeds! When I woke up I took it down because I got the message!
I'm a Massachusetts native and we happen to have a lot of these cute birds every year round. I love their calls, especially their 'cheeseburger' songs.
Hello AgileHProductions, great mini-doc! These little birds are familiar guests at most people’s bird feeders, within their range of distribution. For many Canadians, they are iconic of the Canadian winter and persevererance. You should consider submitting this to the Canada’s Got Treasures collection by joining our YouTube group (/group/TresorTreasure). It would be made available on our channel and website. Help celebrate Canadian diversity!
lol at the end. I love chickadees (hence my username lol). When I was visiting Canada and U.S. I saw soooo many, they come non-stop to my aunt's place in Canada as she has like 10 feeders. There was this park, i forgot the name, but when i put out my hand, even without any food, one two, up to three chickadees actually came and sat on my hand. I think it's because people feed them in the park, but still it was a really cool experience. :D
I very much enjoyed this video! Black oil sunflower seeds are in one of our feeders. We sprinkle a few on the platform feeders, too. We have quite a collection of fresh seeds because we have quite a collection of visiting birds!
For a real thrill, hold a sunflower seed firmly between your lips, tilting your head upwards towards a chickadee. You'll be pleasantly surprized how quickly a bold little chickadee snatches the seed away . . and perhaps a little intimidated when its bright shiny black eyes stare dauntingly at you from just inches away. Its good to learn we're not the only one to "speak" chickadee and we're always delighted to summon these little guys simply by calling out, "Chicka-dee-dee-dee". Try it and see.
Chickadees are interesting to watch and some things are still yet not known about them. I actually got a chance not to long ago to watch one actually eat the seeds from the fruit of a staghorn sumac tree. It really isn't just the normal bird seed (oil sunflower seeds) or insects that they eat. They will also eat what they know they'll benefit from over time to survive.
There's been a family of chickadees in my backyard for as long as I can remember. my parents and I used to peek into their birdhouse when I was a kid. The parents would just sit and wait for us to move, then go about their business. But if my friends did that, they'd be unhappy. It's like they remembered us, the ones who put up their birdhouse. They're pretty cute, I love them.
