They're not "worms" but tiny caterpillars.  They usually go all over the place in the spring time. they first drop from the tree using one strand of silk but the wind usually breaks them free they fall all over the place.

There were actually a lot of green bugs in Spricket's hair, one person had two, and nearly everyone had one. The only bugs that I have heard about to drop on a color go after brown which makes sense if y'all ponder it.

The cottonwood tree seeds that float around were caught by people with curly hair.
