I go see TSO every year and I make it a point in my life to make sure I never miss them play and I tell everybody I can to go see these guys at least once because it's a divine experience, like Criss is up there conducting the show or something. Picture this, Criss Oliva never died, and he's on stage in a black tuxedo playing with Chris Caffery, Johnny lee Middleton, Jon Oliva, Jeff Plate, Al Pitrelli, and Paul O' Neill and that image absolutely sends chills throughout my entire body! EPIC!
I can play a lot of their songs, especially off this album and everytime I play this song it chills me to the bone! If you really listen to a lot of their songs, it's as if Jon was being prophetic when he wrote some of their best songs now looking back in hindsight, although he wasn't writing about Criss but listen to the words of "If I go away" and this song "when the crowds are gone" and "believe" and I swear to god it will make the hairs stand straight up chills will run down your spine!
I used to watch these guys practice in their storage unit in Holiday Fl. back in the 80's and couldn't have possibly known the awesome career they would go on to have and then the tragic events to unfold later with Criss on Oct.17th 1993 I lost a dear friend and the world lost one of the greatest guitarists to ever play. I think they were at the pinnacle of their careers here, especially Jon, he looks so good here as well as the others, this song and video are EPIC! long live SAVATAGE!
@UnbrokenCheese Especially when you think of it in the sense of Criss. It's even worse when I play it myself on guitar and it still chokes me up every time! Imagine for a moment that Criss never died and he's on stage with TSO in a black tuxedo playing with the rest of the guys and that image is one of great satisfaction and desire! Could you imagine how much better TSO would sound today? Fuckin' awesome!
This song is track #4 from the GUTTER BALLET (1989) CD. It does not exist on STREETS (1991). It may have fit into the concept behind STREETS, and maybe not - but irregardless it wasn't on that CD.
I guess it's easy for these new kids nowadays too vote thumbs down cause they only know music like coldplay, they only know the music what is given too them on radio and mtv so they only know comercial music. they only think "if it's not on mtv then it's not music"
@TSODDSSavaCCZO2 When the Crowds are Gone was on Gutter Ballet, not on Streets. Perhaps it was released as a bonus track on Streets at some point, but it most certainly was not on the original Streets release. Check the discography.
I know Savatage and TSO consist of a lot of the same people, but having the same lyrics to different songs is kind of ridiculous. Compare 4:04 in this to 3:58 in
''When the crowds are gone'' is by far the best savatage's ballad..And YES!!Is better than ''BELIEVE''.Anyway ''Believe'' wouldn't be waht it is without this truly masterpiece of music..
Heavy metal music is at it's finest when it's uncompromising power and fearless audacity are used not simply for their own sake, but to convey something and connect with the listener. This song is a perfect example of that, and why Savatage were/are among it's kings.
i think they were just so ahead of all the other bands at that time that people didn't know what to think! i know if this just came out today i bet it would sell out arena's coast to coast! SAVATAGE will rule forever!!! an their music will stand the test of time! so go check out all their song an i bet you will agree with me!!!! rock on all my bother's an sister's in metal! METAL FOREVER!
@bashenbrian Agreed, too bad about Criss Oliva though. They were/are well educated, college educated musicians too. I love the way Oliva brought the sound to Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Oliva, Oneil, Pitrelli, and Middleton make T.S.O.
I have this record signed by the original guys. This is easily one of the greatest ballads ever, from one of the finest and most original albums of the 80's, by a sorely underrated band.
I love reading the HATERS babble. Doesn't matter what video it is, it's all the same nonsense. Sometimes they just want to be noticed since they don't get any attention in their lame hum drum life. So if there are a lot of positive comments they have to stand out and be negative. I know that they have not one ounce of creativity in them so it doesn't bother me. Savatage was awesome! When I played in a band we played " Of Rage and War" ( minus the helicopter sounds at the intro) .
With absolute genius music like this, it still confuses me as to how they never made it huge.. I guess that it was just too complicated for the ordinary listener.
i fucking love these guys,i've forgot about them for a wile but when im drunk and start thinking back when i was in high school 23 years ago they always come back and they end up on the cd plaYER.the fucking guitar and vocals are brutal.
Late one night watching Headbanger's Ball in the late 80's I saw this video and was blown the fuck away. I know music is subjective, but there are songs out there that even deaf people think sounds great and this is one of them. One of the greatest songs ever period...I don't care what genre.
I don't think they actually care whether we are pissed off, I think it's mainly just they get money when advertising anything, regardless of what the page is actually based on :p
I like playing Poker, but this really isn't the right place to be trying to promote it. They'd probably make more money advertising something relevent, but that day will never come
This song, is just astounding. I remember back in about, 08 or so when I was going to see jon oliva's pain, I was hoping so badly to hear this song, but I read that it was rare for him to perform it. Then the day came, and I got the biggest surprise ever, testament were playing down the road, they came to the venue we were at, which was a smallish bar with a stage, I got to hear this song, next to chuck billy, alex and the rest of them. Chuck started tearing, and jon was about to.
Singing this song, with jon and testament in the crowd, who are my 2nd favorite metal band, and 2nd only to savatage, in the same room, was something I could never have imagined and still cannot believe. I managed to take pictures with everyone (jon gave me bunny ears!) To this day, I've met everyone who was ever in savatage, except for the one who I probably would've loved to have met the most, Criss. I just wish I could thank him for everything. For savatage, the crowds will never be gone.
I saw them befor chris got killed here in florida at Livestock one year and at the Ritz then i saw them play at Boatyard village after chris passed it was a tribute concert and Jon never took his sun glasses off the entire time
Could cry every time i see this video and see Criss playing his guitar in such a unbelieveable way.... This song is so awesome and Savatage will always be very special to me.
heres some cool trivia for you.Criss studied classical guitar at our high school,we had a cool band instructor I think he was some kinda 60's flower child anyway he(vic mconnis phonetically spelled too much amnesia lol)let criss pursue his passion for guitar instead of the usuall bullshit trumpet clairanet.he would play his classical guitar at lunch for us on a few occasions anyway he would warm up playing something similar to the riff at the 3.30 mark of this song!
@jvp726 Where was this? Chris was and will always be one of my favorite and most influential gutiarists. After his passing, I got a tattoo in his memory. Left arm sleeve, his playing inspired me and will always be a part of me.
@ace7music criss, jon and steve(doc wac) are from Palm Harbor fl. my high school and criss' was Tarpon springs h.s.Tarpon and palm harbor are neighboring towns(very small in those days(1979)).if you watch the 1981 avatar videos(which are actually 1982 during criss' eruption solo he plays something from van halens cathedral which wasn't released until 82) you'll notice he plays a bone white strat. there is a great story behind that strat.he won it when he was sixteen.I'll share more if u reply bak
@FreakinSweet86 yes I agree, just glad I got to see and know criss and jon in a way very few people got to.(I went to high school w/ criss, till he droped out)Avatar played like every week end in tarpon springs, clearwater, palm harbor etc here in fl.the 1981 avatar videos were actually 1982.
Theres something kinda spiritual about watching Criss play the solo to his wife Dawn, she never really got over what happened to them that night in Oct '93, she suffered physically and emotionally for over 11 years until she passed away in january of '05. May they both rest in peace together.
i cant believe i spent my High School years partying with these guys.Tarpon springs H.S. from 79-83 rockingest school ever thanks for the memories Jon,Criss and Doc Wac(steve wac) oct.17,1993 will always choke me up R.I.P. Criss and family
i remember the last show b4 doc was killed (long b4 this album)(LIVESTOCK) And no knock on him but they just got better and better upto this album , which in myt opinion, is a rock MASTERPIECE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was just at TSO's concert last night in Rockford, IL. The concert was in this hall and Chris and Johnny were a little sentimental about it. I think that helped pushed the show to be the best of their's I've seen yet!
Awesome to see this video again! Truly one of the great bands of ALL fucking time. RIP Criss. Got a chance to meet him 2 months before his death when he played Denver- After the goldrush.
Found Savatage after hearing them mentioned on That Metal Show. Now they're one of my favorites especially this song! Its the most played song on my ipod!
this song should go down in metal history how this song pulls you in is unbelievable
savatage is a metal band plain and simple they got a bit poppy with fight for the rock but geez what band didnt. look at metallica with load and reload total garbage savatage 4 ever.
I really love this band and this video tells so much deep inside souls that one day have had a dream and now the emptiness is present. The music is perfect, the lyrics says much and the video is very well done. I would like them to be proud of this after all this man has been in. They deserve more...

these are the best albums by savatage the rest you can forget. after 'Hall of the Mountain King'.. there was no more savatage as we know it. the band had turned into comercial bon jovi hair rock...
They became unique after gutter ballet, no band ever did what they had. Their musically strongest records are from hall to handful of rain. I know that everyone can like different things, but to call their later records as commercial bon jovi hair rock is a sign of foolishness.
@rjakobej when one of your fav metal band in the late 80's turn into pop music like they did, it is a sign of foolishness. after all it was changes like this that nearly destroyed metal in the 90's... this is fact. anyway if you like the pop version of savatage i dont mind but never say it wasnt commercial because it was.
It was far from being commercial. They were never a mainstreem band nor their songs reached top places in the charts. If you say, fight for the rock was an attempt to be commercial (evanthough they were forced by the label to do so) I would agree, but not with gutter ballet, edge of thorns or handful of rain. Have you ever listened to those records properly? If those records represent commercial pop rock, than dream theater, queensryche or iron maiden are also pop bands?
I saw Savatage on this tour. Hearing this song makes me tear up a bit.
Savatage should be remembered among the giants of metal. They might not have achieved mainstream success in their time due to their not fitting into a easy, marketable pigeonhole, but their effect on listeners with ears to hear the genius behind their music, many of which would go on to be musicians themselves, is incalculable.
Oh man I envy you. My dream was to see Savatage , but then I realised of tragic event that has bestowed upon them. But I never stop being a fan of them. Cheers to you
@beerjitsu This is a perfect way to sum them up, while it sucks they didn't get to make it huge, they do have a small following of die hard fans that know the ins and out sof the band and their music. Pretty much everyone I've ever introduced Savatage to (mostly musicians) have been abosultely in awe of Chris and his leads and Jon with his vocals.
Every album has something different to offer, so you never knew what yopu getting when you bought the CD/vinyl.
@beerjitsu Lucky bastard!! Well said!!! they ARE so underated!!! Cris is one of my 4 favorite guitarists along with Randy R.,Jimi H.,Goerge L. HMM... 3 of the 4 are gone, Damn... i need a beer.

criminally underrated band, even the supposed "Rock" and " Metal" TV stations never play these or anything like them, the corporate fucktards

what a wonderful song!

Theres something kinda spiritual about watching Criss play the solo to his wife Dawn, she never really got over what happened to them that night in Oct '93, she suffered physically and emotionally for over 11 years until she passed away in january of '05. May they both rest in peace together.

I was just at TSO's concert last night in Rockford, IL. The concert was in this hall and Chris and Johnny were a little sentimental about it. I think that helped pushed the show to be the best of their's I've seen yet!

I really love this band and this video tells so much deep inside souls that one day have had a dream and now the emptiness is present. The music is perfect, the lyrics says much and the video is very well done. I would like them to be proud of this after all this man has been in. They deserve more...

Sirens
Doungeons are Calling
Power of the Night
Hall of the Mountain King
these are the best albums by savatage the rest you can forget. after 'Hall of the Mountain King'.. there was no more savatage as we know it. the band had turned into comercial bon jovi hair rock...
jackobyuk 10 months ago
@jackobyuk
They became unique after gutter ballet, no band ever did what they had. Their musically strongest records are from hall to handful of rain. I know that everyone can like different things, but to call their later records as commercial bon jovi hair rock is a sign of foolishness.
rjakobej 10 months ago
@rjakobej when one of your fav metal band in the late 80's turn into pop music like they did, it is a sign of foolishness. after all it was changes like this that nearly destroyed metal in the 90's... this is fact. anyway if you like the pop version of savatage i dont mind but never say it wasnt commercial because it was.
jackobyuk 10 months ago
@jackobyuk
If those records represent commercial pop rock, than dream theater, queensryche or iron maiden are also pop bands?
rjakobej 10 months ago
@jackobyuk Hey man... This was a cruel judgement... Please don't compare Savatage with shit pop bon jovi.. This is a huge mystake!!
This song (When The Crowds Are gone) is a MASTERPIECE.
