I loved Spirit, and I watched War Horse yesterday. The scenes where they're made to haul the great guns up the banks is so like when the horses in Spirit have to drag the train up the mountain. Very powerful films about the horses who didn't get a choice. Thanks so much for sharing my favourite track from the stage production. :D
@6045310708 Assuming that you are talking about the War Horse movie, no it wasn't. The Play and the film are different things, despite the same story. And to your second question, probably not. It is rather hard to find music from the play on Youtube, the only reason this video has 20,000 views is because you can't listen to this song anywhere else. Plus, as far as i know at the moment, the soundtrack for the play is only for the British production.
Loved the movie, don't know if the play has been to Perth yet.
When i was watching the movie i kept thinking of Spirit, especially the bond between the horses and humans and the scene where he and Topthorn are pulling the cannon. =) Beautiful song. =)
Reason why you would probably have difficulty in trying to find the lyrics to the song is because it's an adaptation of Tams' 'Snow Falls'... the lyrics are mostly the same but rearranged differently.
This piece of music is on my all time favourites list. It is so haunting and so beautiful and John Tams sings it perfectly. It would be fabulous if Speilberg kept this song in the movie.
**** And finally, it's "Phoebe arise, a gleam in her eyes". Phoebe is a female personification of the moon (paired with John Barleycorn's personification of barley and the harvest), and is again a reference to the harvest and the cycle of life represented in the play.
I enjoyed your video very much, and was glad to be able to hear the whole song again. War Horse is hands down the most astonishing and affecting piece of theatre I've ever seen.
* It's "I'll wager a hat-full of guineas". A guinea is an old British coin
** It's "And like Barleycorn, who rose from the grave" John Barleycorn is an old British folk tale, involving death and resurrection, and it is a metaphor for the harvest, and making beer and ale from barley.
*** It's "Plowed, sown, reaped and mown". This is again a reference to planting and harvest.
Full, corrected lyrics, with notes: I'll wager a hat-full of guineas* Against all of the songs you can sing That one day you'll love and the next day you'll lose And winter will turn into spring And the snow falls The wind calls The year turns round again And like Barleycorn, who rose from the grave** A new year will rise up again And there will come a time of great plenty A time of good harvest and song 'Til then put your trust in tomorrow my friend For yesterday's over and done
@inamonianim Wth do you mean by fake? It is an animation, what exactly do you expect? And anyway i think that the horses are very realistic in this film compared to other animations including horses.
@PaperMonicle By fake I mean eyebrows and human facial expressions. I expect no more from such a movie. The point is, it makes me laugh. This isn't to say that I didn't love the movie. Don't read into things too much, good sir.
@PaperMonicle By fake I mean eyes right in the front of their heads along with eyebrows. That and the fact they make stupid faces like humans. That's not to say this isn't a great film. I've just worked with horses for a long time and I find this film's interpretation of a horse to be amusing :)
@inamonianim things aint perfect in Animated movies, sometimes cartoons are done differently cuz of accident, human mistakes, or it may look more appealing to the audience. The movie was made for kids, it don't need to be accurate for them to enjoy
""Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way." — Martin Luther King Jr Truth, and divine misery, reads the same, in all tongues, and across all times. The British lost 8 million horses during WW-1. The monument that stands to remember these noble beasts reads; "They Never Had The Choice...."
i went to see war horse for my english lit course. it is INCREDIBLE. the people who move the horse puppets are amazing, the personality of the horse comes through clear as crystal, and i could not stop crying at the end when they decide joey (the horse) needs to die, and albert realises it's his horse. wont tell you the exact ending, but oh my gosh, you HAVE to go and see it.
Ok so on the soundtrack it says songs were written by john tams nd sung by tim van eyken or sumin but wen i saw war horse last year a man with jet black hair sung these wats his name or was he miming to tims voice Please reply someone!!!!! ;D
@XTaylorXSwift The 'Song Man' (as they call him in the show's programme) is not miming, his style is very similar to Eykens but there are notable differences, especially since his performance is live and therefore not as flawless as Eyken's on the soundtrack. Now the Song Man could change in performances but I believe the constant performer on the West End so far has been Saul Rose, a notable folk artist. However it might have been a different performer, it depends on the night
@XTaylorXSwift Sorry, also forgot to say that there has been a change of cast since War Horse was first on the West End. The original Song Man was Eyken himself, now it is Saul Rose. I'm not 100% if there was anyone in between but details can usually be found online as to when either of them were playing the role
This is great. I was lucky last year because I was year 9 and got on the year 10 trip to see this for drama, and now its running again this december so I can see it again!
I've been listening to this song over and over again for almost half an hour now. It is so beautiful! and of course, to make it more emotional, it reminds me of War Horse, how brilliant the play is, and the horrific and tragic history behind it!
@nessasONLINEshow i don't think they can be found on the internet but i've just now tried to put together what i think the lyrics are in the description. they're not completely accurate but they're mostly right.
You'll find the lyrics are adapted from an earlier song, Snow Falls. Google Snow Falls + John Tams and you'll find the lyrics. And by the way, it's grave!
I saw it a couple of weeks ago in London. It isn't my sort of thing, I'm a musical sort of person . But within the first half I was in tears and all the way through the second half. Truley amazing x
It was written by John Tams, but it is Tim van Eyken (who did the singer / melodeon player in War Horse until recently) who is singing it here, beautiful song, thanks. I went to see John Tams live a few weeks ago and he sung it there, but it was a different arrangement. I prefer the War Horse Version myself. Another Beautiful song by John Tams is "Scarecrow" by Home Service (his band). ENJOY!!!
there is a book i did not know this i shall have to read it! but i may be going to see the play in october half term yay! it is an awsome song though!
Yeah they have moved the length the play si running up until February now as it si so good. I would get the soundtracks from itunes, but do I really want to pay for them lol??
Wondeful video =) This song is actually called The Staro of the County Down, but they made other lyrics for it in the War Horse play =D

two questions, one: was this song in the movie?
And two, does anyone know if there is another version on youtube somewhere of a woman singing it like on broadway? I like that version better.

you are quite correct. this is sung by tim van eycken

I would double check. The recording I have is definitely John Tams. Tim sang it during the stage play but John Tams released the recording.

The Correct Chorus Lyrics:
Ploughed, sowed, reaped and mowed
The Year turns around again
And like (John ) Barleycorn
Who rose from the grave
The year turns around again
bluebird7962 6 months ago
The First line in the Lyrics is:
I'll wager a hat full of guinees (old english currency)
John Barleycorn (legend) was a farm hand who was murdered and thrown onto the land. IT rained and he 'arose' from his grave.
Phoebe is 'the moon'. Its reference has Wicca/Pagan origins. The 'old religion' in england followed gods and goddesses
