Sorry Chris, the list of things Bento CANNOT do is longer than the list of things it CAN do.
Incidentally chaps, Apple **never** pays people to promote their gear. They don't pay to get Macs placed in movies or for actors to use iPhones, none of that.
Dude, I'm down! Worth going for for MAC! Best Software. It is easy. I'm a fucking artistand the I've found a great tracking my paintings. But DUDE, Apple OWNs FILEMAKER.
Bento has one main advantage-Address book syncs up nicely, looks better & you EXPORT to a nice spreadsheet to preps data for import FMPro.
Got an FMPro custom database going to track film company projects calculates job estimates, invoices, summaries project totals and their costs, shows profit per proj & per client, preps call sheets by day & locations-includes crew & talent photos for call sheet - all connecting vendors, clients, talent & crew to proj.
There are two ways to create relationships in Bento. You can manually add Related Record fields, just like you add any other type of field. Or you can simply drag-and-drop by holding down the shift key, selecting the library you wish to create a relationship with in the Source list, and dragging that library to the current Records pane. When you let go of the mouse button, Bento will create a Related Record field in the current database.
what do u think about oracle, its been years i tried to learn and its the most rubbish database, as its so damn complicated, but true bento and filemaker are excellent
@redSectorA I have a Mac Book Pro. I bought Filemaker because it is cross platform, although I prefer ACT for it's calender program. Do you know how to apply a clander program to it?
erm... oh i know! I can make lame databases of all my original cooking recipes! erm... yeah right!
People who have real uses for databases use industrial quality software like MySQL, SQLLite, etc (free and opensource btw). If you *really* need a frontend use something like phpmyadmin (again free and opensource).
You can't even share data between multiple users and processes with filemaker and co. What's the point honestly?
Access is powerful enough and I have produced some good databases from it, however the UI sucks and I have to do some major VBA coding to achieve what I am after. Not good for the average user.
Chris, It seems that you don't know exactly what a database is. What you are talking about is a database handling software. The main purpose of a Database software is to store data and retrieve them when you need. MS Access does this job you are talking about, but it's interface killed it.
Good examples of Databases: Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Lite, etc. (the last three are free).
Many database handling software uses one of the above databases to store data.
I'm hardly gonna set up an Oracle or PostgreSQL database to keep my home inventory on am I? The RDBMS systems you are talking about are enterprise level.
Access/Bento are mainly a front end, however there is enough back end available to produce small tasks (eg 2GB on a MS Jet engined DB is fine)
Ok, good point. MySQL, PostgreSQL or Oracle are quite heavy. But you don't need a database system, you could have your registries stored on XML files.
I learned how to use access last year. Other than the integration with the microsoft office work suite apps, it annoys the hell out of me. It is a terrible application. I'll give you a reference, to learn like everything there is about excel took about 3 weeks to learn. The curriculum allocated 2 MONTHS to access.
I have not used this but it looks to be a (Personal) Content Management System not a database. Granted CMSs are usually web functionality and document managers built on a database.
Bento does have advantages over CMSs by sticking to one platform it can take advantage of OS libraries where most are limited to what can be done with cross platform web technologies (supporting IE7/IE6/FF/S/O). GUI apps have much more file permissions and given equal time in development GUI apps are more reliable.
Probably because it is part of MS Office, and when people think of MS Office, they think memos and spreadsheets. I wouldn't use MS Access for anything more than personal fast solutions that eventually may be migrated to more powerful solutions, but useful, it is, indeed.
Bento is NOT a relational database!

Apple already offers Bento or FileMaker Pro as a pre-installed app on their Mac's, if you choose to do so.

@moninawaz1 ACT! is for client tracking... much better than Bento for that...
Daylite on the Mac.. same thing much better than Bento.
For the average person who doesn't want to get too deep into databasea Bento is perfect.
Of course for those who remember DOS days.... Q&A from Symantec was much better without the ability to manage photos and video.

Access is not that bad... I use it to model simple databases fast. I also use it as an intermediate when I need to move data between different DB's

I agree. I don´t understand people´s aversion to MS Access. It takes time to master, but once you do, it´s a great software to create databases.
