This was a great performance of this song done by Fantasia. She sang this song in representation of Celie with such conviction and emotion that you could both see the courage in her face and feel the sadness from her past in her voice. ok, as a musical theater person, i'm going to give a little insight as to why i believe the audience didn't stand. As powerful as Fantasia was, she sang the song as a singer, not in character as Celie. It was a great performance, but not for the Tony's. I bet there was some snobbery there with Broadway performers who are already angry that non-Broadway performers, such as Fantasia, are taking plum roles. Again, great performance, but one more for the Grammy's, not the Tony's.
I had the good fortune of seeing her perform during her last week and her performance was one of the most inspiring, sincere, moving, genuine performances I've ever seen. I'm not always please that the producers put untrained stars in shows..I'd rather see my friends get the jobs... but sometimes someone deserves a shot and Fantasia was brilliant.
this was, in my opinion, literally the best performance of the night. i have no idea what you're talking about: she WAS celie. how are you not seeing the emotion? too MANY people on broadway have the emotion but NOT the voice - or vice versa. fantasia (somehow naturally) has both, as seen in this performance. i haven't seen something so beautifully expressive AND vocally strong in too, too long.
the biggest problem is that they stuck her in front of that stationary mic...if you watch the version of her on Oprah where she feels free to move around more, there is more character.

That really was a stunning performance. I would however like to point out that NO ONE stood up, INCLUDING the African-Americans in the audience!(I do believe there is a close-up of Taye Diggs SITTING down just like everyone else) I thought that was an amazing rendition of the song, and well deserved a Standing O ! You know music needs some refreshing talent to rejuvenate lack luster sales and originality. Sorry, Beyonce has been given to many times to shine and she's faltered. Jennifer Hudson's perfomance in "Dreamgirls" busted Beyonce's questionable talent of carrying a movie role. She can perform, but can she outshine in a leading role. It's doubtful now.
Beyonce's is a great performer, but a lousy communicator threw her overproduced and hyped music. She was suppose to be the star in "Dreamgirls" and Jennifer kicked her ass there. Her Cd sales have been lower than expected with this second album "B-day". People are bored and want some originality. The infamous "fall" recently was a metaphor.
