QSO's happen all the time. However, sometimes folks are doing contests, special events, etc. Some of those contests have big prizes. And the guys who score big wind up getting to test all the new radios and demo antennas and such.
All of these activities are good for the science. With the recent surge of new Amateurs, anything that promotes the service is great! Tune up in the rag chew part f the bands. You'll see. Decode some Digital modes (PSK on 7.035 or 14.070 download software for free) !
there is nothing more boring then dx contests qso's on saturday nights. i use to be on cb in the early 80's till they mucked that up when i use to live in london. since then, i have been a swl. and then only broadcast bands
Im a ham and no longer use the licence mostly as audio hf equipment is so overpriced.. I get much more buz from the triple 5 these days.. like u it seems ;) 26tm555
Hey, let's all see how big our dicks are and have a contest. Let's fuck the whole band up for the guys who work for a living and only work the radio at the weekend and what for? Oh yes, to see how big our dicks are. No wonder 11M is so popular at the weekends!
Why do you hate contest stations? Is it because they are better operators than you are? They have a better understanding of radio wave propagation than you will ever know? They activate rare locations and give many a chance to work. 11 meters is a mess in my opinion but you have fun on that band.
That's a very arrogant assumption. They are not any better than me, or know anything more than me (well, it's doubtful anyway). What skill is involved in just mentioning "Name, Rank, Serial Number". The receptionists where I work can do that pretty damn easily.
Now, the special activations are great. I have worked pretty interesting ones such as Lighthouses, and special event or club stations. But I absolutely can't stand contesting at all whatsoever.
11m is a mess you say? How about the bloody Americans that play random noise between x frequency and y frequency so that they can give themselves a patch to work on? That's hardly playing fair isn't it?
It is clear to me they can operate under conditions which you yourself can't. The evidence is your complaining of the noise. You don't hear them complaining. You can't compare operating on 40 meters in a contest with a person on telephone that is just ridiculous.
I could operate in those conditions if I wished to. Pile ups have actually been created because quite a few times for people to work me, and I can negotiate them well. The comparison to a receptionist was on the robotical and repetitive basis of these contest stations of just saying the same thing over and over: Name, rank, serial number. How people are not bored into a coma by this is nothing short of a miracle.

Indeed!
I do admit a f**k up though. It WOULD have helped if I turned the Pre-Amp off! Would have been less nosier!

And you sir, are a moron. With an attitude that is that elitist, that you think your own bodily waste doesn't stink. If you catch my drift...

Nothing wrong with the activity. I just HATE these contesting stations. The Ham Radio bands seem so soulless half of the time.
Thank God that these don't occur that often on 11 meters.

Whats the problem your having? Can't handle a little activity on the bands?
