I think motorcycle riders upshift clutchless all the time if they want to, so it can't be THAT hard on the gearbox. I think all of the performance motorcycles use straight cut gears too.
@argh1989 You can upshift without the clutch if you hit the right revs. But sequential shift (like the bikes) cuts the throttle while up-shifting anyway.
Are people actually this stupid? This guy can drive! Clutchless shifting is NOT bad for your transmission if you do it CORRECTLY like he is doing. This driver obviously knows how to move his feet around the pedals and I guarantee is 100x better at driving than any of the idiots posting on this video. If you don't understand how cars work and think because he doesn't use the clutch he will ruin his car, you need to shut up and learn a bit more about how cars work!!
@rdlx3m im american but i know about all this...but its true, a majority only know how to go in straight lines and think the clutch needs to be used constantly...
@Cuateradiacion I'm twice group N national tarmac rally champion, does that count? If you read back through the various comments I'm sure I've alread posted to say that these videos were only made to demenstrate different techniques on a rallying forum. I often double decluch as its less hard on the synchros or dog rings. The video on my channel is using a synchro box as the dog box exploded on the Manx. Synchros were worn and in places it crunches, that is where double declutch is useful.
@Cuateradiacion My father does not pay for my rallying, I do, I have broken the input shaft of the R&D dog box before now but then so did Steve Simpson recently on an S12 WRC! Shit breaks, it motorsport! Clutchless up changes are not much harder on a dog box if you have a fairly light flywheel and you get the lift right.
@tezzacrack You don't need to tell me about non-synchro 'CRASH' boxes, one of my first vehicles was a Series 2A which had crash first and second, you had to be even more precise matching the revs on a crash box as unlike a racing dog box there aren't big gaps between the dog teeth. You wanna see me heel'n'toe a Landy, because the size of the steering wheel and the pedal placement I actually use the full heel on the brake and the toes on the throttle (yes, back to front to normal) but it works.
That was heel-toe downshift action not double clutch heel-toe breaking. Double clutch breaking would mean he would (all the while braking) - clutch - put gear in neutral - clutch out - rev - clutch in - downshift - rev - clutch out
That was heel-toe downshift action not double clutch heel-toe breaking. Double clutch breaking would mean he would (all the while braking) - clutch - put gear in neutral - clutch out - rev - clutch in - downshift - rev - clutch out
@chipain So basically blip (heel) the throttle twice instead of once like in this video? What purpose does that serve? If you got hyper light engine internals and belt pulleys I can imagine having to moderate the rpm`s with the heel or change your rhytm if the rpm drop too fast but in this vid it was clearly not needed.
Simple heel & toe downshift is used for synchro boxes, technique is: brake in (toe), clutch in, rev (heel), downshift, clutch out, brake out. So you`re wrong on both accounts?
@ToreDL87 He drive with straight cut H shift dogbox (non synchro). The purpose for double clutching is to save both clutch disk and dog-gear rapidly wear when downshifting. Because of dog box type has no synchro ring so dogclutch(attach with gear) and drumclutch(attach with collar) can't match their speed before engaging cause dogteeth wear every time when downshift.
I'm sure others can better explain why DDC makes for a smoother change than a single use of the clutch, but I haven't seen an explanation here. Think of the transmission in 3 sections: there's the drive from the engine to the flywheel; then the drive from the clutch to the input shaft; then the drive from the gear you've selected to the road wheels. A rev-matched single declutch gearchange will match the speeds of the first and third sections, but to spin up the middle section you'll need a DDC.
Double clutching mostly used on racers to help slow down the sychro when down shifting. If you drive in friendly areas then no need to do this extra work on your feet.
@er1k93 I know that heel & toe is for making fast and smooth downshifts. But what is the difference between single and double clutching, i mean what benefits does double clutching bring in comparison to single?
Double clutching just means you use it twice to downshift. You use the clutch to go into neutral, that's where you rev match by using heel & toe, and then you use the clutch to go to the lower gear. You have to be pretty fast at it for it to be useful.
@er1k93 Thanks for the explanation, but i still don´t feel much wiser :-) When i heel & toe i simply brake, press the clutch, rev match and put it into gear. Single clutch. But thanks anyways :-)
@craig575m What's so riddiculous in a good driving technique? I think the only problem is that he blips the throttle a bit too early, but if he blips more than enough, then the rpm will fall down to the correct rate while he finishes the duble decluch. It's a properly outcarried technique. With some more pactising, it will be perfect! Oh, and with a dogbox, double decluch OR heel and toe is the MINIMUM what you can do for your gearbox. But the best is to do them together!
@06tCmF they're OMP Corsa kart boots - not actually FIA approved for International events (not fire retardant) but fine for use on national rallies in the UK.
Its a shame you don't need to do this with all of the mordern computer stuff and new gear boxes in cars. I remember my driving instructer during my lessons kept looking at me when I changed down like WTF are you doing. I just smiled back and said at least I have some skill, I've spent too long racing cars.
great vid!!! love it. so dogbox eh? hmm I've always wanted to drive one, Rally all the way. Im really trying to get my career started in racing aswell. I like the dog box, nothing against it, but idk for me I love the clutch to much not to use a regular transmission :P just how I feel about it. I can work the pedals fast enough without any jerking during high rev. idk call me old fashion even tho Im really young. I been going out to autocross, but do you have any advice on how I can get to pro?
Yes. Dog engagement just refers to the way the gears are engaged. Production car manual gearboxes use synchro hubs/rings to change gear smoothly and quietly. A dog clutch type engagment is much more crude but it's used in competition vehicles as you can change gear faster and without the clutch.
Really? That must shave a lot of time during upshifts then. I want to mod my car with this now haha, but it seems in your video downshift heel and toe still requires clutch.
What kind of racing do you do in this video anyway? Backroad rallying?
You can clutchless up and down shift with a dog box, but there is a technique watch?v=d9t_41t0Sog I just made these vids to make a point on a rally forum.

Nice man:) Rally is definitely my favorite type of racing too. Keep making your videos dude! I wouldn't know the newer types of transmission if not for videos like this.
@Wast3m as I said before I only actually made the vids to demonstrate techiniques I was talking about on a rally forum. You use the double-de-clutch technique to algn the speed of the dog ring or synchro hub to the gear you engaging, it's not totally necessary (unles you have a crash box) but does save on some wear of the dogs and coupled to the heel'n'toe technique helps keep the car stable under braking. I use in more on road seactions than on stage.
that means you only use the clutch to downshifting right??making a corner like this for exemp. brake brake clutch, downshift heel toe, trottle, gear up, gear up...
Think about it; to double-de-clutch you take the clucth up in neutral between gears (and blip the throttle to match the revs) - you can't do this on a sequential as there is no 'real' neutral between gears on a sequential box.
Sequential is just a mechanism for cycling the selector forks through the gears one after the other. Nearly all sequential boxes are dog engagement so no you don't have to use the clutch. The only way you'll damamge your engine is is you over rev it by down shifting too soon.
WTF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

shifting without using the clutch = transmission damage: transmission damage = $3,000-$8,000~more depending on the car.
