She sits her saddle like shes in an armchair, w/her leg loose, swinging, & way too far forward. Her two-point doesnt allow enough free movement of the horse's back, nor enough release in the rein. She also sits very heavily & abrasively, driving her mount with every step, which cannot be comfortable for the horse. Now that horse is worth its weight in gold. Its him & him alone that got her thru the course clear, enduring her hard seat & hand with a forgiving nature that many horses would not.
I'm not saying that any of Peyton's equitation problems are unfixable, or even uncommon given the amount of time she has been riding. But as a horse trainer & instructor of over 20 years, I can tell you that encouraging her to ride in the way that she did at this Derby will absolutely do her no favors & will ultimately get her injured if she continues to push for advancement without first solidifying her basics.
Wow, she is going to be a VERY good rider down the road. Tons of natural talent.
And what a good horse!! haha. The only thing I would say is that the horse looks lame behind. But perhaps it's an older horse who just goes and does its job.
Peyton has most certaintly improved in riding this year, as I know her personally, and plus, for those seven weeks that she stayed at Longacres again this year, and with the 5 hours/times a day of riding, she really has improved and overall is a great rider. I myself have noticed myself improve at Longacres, and its just amazing. Just keep on riding, and do what you love!
she needs to lengthen her stirrups, or even better drop them, so she can put her leg underneath her. that will help with her 2-point and her heels, plus she could more effectively aid the horse with her seat to keep him going, instead of kicking him with practically every stride. i am teaching a rider that has a strong tendency to push her leg forward like this and riding w/out stirrups has helped. i would love to see peyton when she gets her legs right, she'll be great
this girl is very lucky her pony is so well behaved. I have taught riding lessons in jumping and dressage for almost 6 years (since i was 17) and I would never let anyone who has only been riding for 7 weeks jump a horse, no matter how "gifted" or "talented" they seem. i am definately a natural with horses and after riding for only 2 years, i was jumping 3'9" but i did not do any jumping at all for almost a year. i did lots of ground poles and work on my seat and 2 point.
Eventerjazz6 is certainly welcome to her opinion. Some trainers believe in doing no jumping until a rider is fully trained on the flat. At Longacres we believe otherwise, and teach jumping right along with flat work from the very beginning. We're very proud of Peyton's accomplishments last year, and will soon post another video of her more advanced riding this season at Longacres Riding Camp.
THAT WAS REALLY GOOD RIDIN FOR ONLY 7 WEEKS!! but you do have to work on your 2-point (or jumping) position a BIT more.. and some other stuff.. like moving into your canter. but other than that REALLY GOOD! where do you live J.W ( just wondering)
not bad for only 7 weeks of riding! instead of gripping with your knees use your lower leg to hold your leg steady, that way your leg wont slide back. i know this b/c my instructor is always yelling at me for doing that! with more practice, you will be a great rider! keep up the good work :)
Hi Peyton, its one of your friends from LA, well, I didn't go yet there, but my name starts with the letter M. For more reference, look on the email/pen-pal page,(at the LA website) im the 4th person. ANYWAY, you are really good in riding. I cant wait to see you actually at camp and see how you ride! Love your horse forever too!
omg does everyone tht gives crap suggestions wanna shut up, obviously you all think you are jst amazing n after watching some of your vids...your so not. This girl has only been riding for 7 WEEKS any advice tht she actually listens to will come from her instructor not all of you. Anyways i thought you did really well n to win the class jst shows you must be a natural =) well done! x
I don't mean to be rude or show offy, but I noticed that your toes are pointing out instead of forward. I had the same promblem. What happened to me was that I got mad points taken off for it in shows, and I also built muscle on the back of my leg instead of the side. Because I was using the wrong muscles, it made it really hard to correct the problem. Since you only started 7 weeks ago (congrats by the way you're doing great)it shouldn't be that hard for you to correct.
wen ur riding towards the jump reali scoop with your seat dont make it obvious but it will give the horse mor encouragement, also its really gd that you dnt 4get bout ur legs but when you kick use the lower part of ur leg and if your goin 2 grip with anything use your calf muscles NOT YOUR KNEES! relax in ur hips and go with the movement.keep up the good wrk.:D i am sure u will bcome a gr8 rider dnt giv up there is always room for improvement!things to work on but doesnt everyone lol
that was reli good concediring you havent been rideing that long is that your horse, how old is he he looks like my old horse but he was stolen and then sold. nice vidio and well done.
i'd say you did pretty good. is your horse a thoroughbred? if he is hes really calm for one. i can tell you have to push him. why don't you hold a crop to give him a 'lil spunk? good job though.
Congrats. The horse seems a little stiff though. I'd suggest that you grip with you knees more. Your position also seems a bit wobbly at times, maybe you should work on that lol. Sorry to be picky.
lol. her horse does alot of tail flipping! And, (not to be showy or rude) but I think she needs to lean forward more when the horse jumps. But that is just what i think. :) Please don't bite my head off :)
Very good. I agree with what everyone else said. Plus get those heels down :D. And I notice the horse is quite lazy. If your not wearing them already I recommend spirs. Nothing big.
haha no kidding thats good peyton. i was stuck at a barn for like 2 years only riding once a week and i was stuck jumping LOWER than that for 2 years... gr. thats amazing.
I have to agree with YusefDee6969, I didn't realised that your ride only had 7 weeks underneath it. Good accomplishments!!!! Your knees and toes are pointing out. When jumping ppl should be able to see the sore of your boot. Also your heels shound be down more. WOw , I think you did an awesome job to be able to do this in that short of time!
Great accomplishment for only seven weeks. It is best to leave the jumps this low for a while. It also helps to learn on a good forgiving horse like this one.
You need:
1) Longer release (I'm seeing you pull on the horse's mouth over the jump, big no-no)
2) To keep your knee on the pad at the front of the saddle, (there IS a reason it is there)
3) Tuck your elbows in a little bit
4) Work on your two-point to strengthen your legs (your legs should be tight against the saddle)
sorry i keep hitting poor comment. I agree fully with that comment

grip with your knees? you want her to pivot at the knee and land on her head? DONT grip with your knees- every equestrian knows that
