  • I was from 79 Dougrie Rd. (opp. Castleton Primary) The close isn't there now. They knocked a few closes down to build houses in our back courts.

That was an adventure playground. One day it was a scene from a cowboy picture the next it was world war 2. The grass was long and was good for sniping on Germans. :-)

I also remember getting an annual (Beano or Dandy) sitting on it on a roller skate and flying down Birgidale and roon the bend at the bottom. Before skateboards were invented.

  • Ardencraig cres was called 'baby land'. Before it got demolished we took all the doors out and made a five storey den over in the 'wids'. No sooner had we filled it with hash smoke then the thing collapsed. It's just as well naeb'dy wis killed!!

  • I grew up in castlemilk! the mitchell hill flats

  • Nice to see so many ppl who have moved on from castlemilk still remembering their roots, i'm out in Spain now and i will forever be proud to be able to say that i was born and raised in Castlemilk! Andrew Molloy (moyes )

does anybody remember the looking glass shop?

  • I remember the looking glass shop...they used to have really cool display cabinets that u pressed a button on top and the contents rotated! lol

Spent lots of pocket money in there!! :)

  • i used to pass that bookies in machrie every morning on my way to braeside primary in the eighties. I remember when they closed it down, and all us wee torag weans broke in and ran riot as kids did to derelect buildings back then! There was even a picture of the haunted house we used to go to on our lunch break across the woods in tormusk area. Brought back some memories mate, thank you!

    Andrew Molloy

  • This is brilliant, brought back so many memories. We moved to 214 Ardencraig Rd when I was 7 yrs old in 1974 and moved to Croftfoot in 79. My old close is in the 2nd pic, first close on the left next to the old 37 bus terminus. My gran lived in the mitchellhill flats opposite.

I've lived in England for a long time now and I hear most of the old Castlemilk has been torn down so it's amazing to see these photos. My mum and dad met as they both lived in Scarrel Dr, my dad will love these! Thanks!

  • Hey Andy great vid, I'm another one of Castlemilk's weans and it was great to see the old streets and schools etc...Been in Perth, Western Australia for 10 years, but one of my sisters still lives in the C.Milk, another sister - Susan did Castlemilk History and Stable block stuff too. My grandparents lived in the Mitchellhill flats...recognise lots of streets, shops, community centres...fabulous...well done M8 a truly documented pictorial history of ane of the biggest housing estates in Europe.

    Respect!

  • Aww am onli 18 but the memories r brill and yeah castlemilk is safe just dont cause trubo n ul b ok :D

  • Having lived in Castlemilk from Dec. 1956 till Sept 1962 I watch this video on a regular basis as it brings back the happiest memories of my childhood. I moved to Tormusk Drive when I was 8 and left when I was 14. At that time I think it was one of the best places for children to grow up in.

  • Is Castlemilk a safe place nowdays? Is it possible to live and survive after 10p.m on wekends? Are people friendly?

  • that's for putting this up... i used to live in the flats at 1:20 back in 94-96.. but i forgot the name of the place... i went to thomas primary school.. im Malaysian... still remember kids used to called us paki's... but were not... lol.... thanks 4 putting this up wee mannn...

  • the balantay drive.? but as far as i can remember it's called scarrle terrace... still remember miss bennet driving her fiat punto back in the days... Thomusk primary...

  • Left Castlemilk and Scotland in 1970. Visited Castlemilk in 1990 and got the shock of my life, a right slum. Great to see the old place is getting a face lift.

  • I love the video mate but around 01:39 is that not a snapshot of the shops in Fernhill Road that comes under Rutherglen ?

  • NAH! sorry..definatly Blaeloch, the shops in Fernhill have acanopy sticking out and the house windows above stick out in a 'V' shape.

  • lol

They just looked a bit similar and if you compare the two then they look alike. :)

Great stuff, all the same. Is that the wee fish van shown just off the Drive down from the auld Swimming Pool or the ice cream one? Some of my my family live just across from it and it looks as if you've taken the photo from where they are.

I know the shops in Fernhill well. It just looked like them with the shutters down.

  • I was born in Birgidale Road when there was a working farm across the road back in the early 60s. I remember staring out over the veranda. Recognised Arnprior Street too! Good to see the renovation. The Castlemilk people were always the salt of the earth so the renewal was well deserved.

  • Excellent. Do I win a prize if I can tell you every street name ? lol

    Well done. :)

  • what a great trip down memory lane! Cheers!

  • haha =]

    Loved it

my old street was on it and my grans house >_<

    thanks =]

    xx

  • ma auntie stayed in bogony terrace, loved gon up there, the big s bend,ma burd grew up in the bogony flats, never ending story,s about the flats, mad ones, funny ones, she loved growing up there

  • Thanks a million,a great place where great people once lived. Like myself many have moved to more exotic places but still yearn for the banter. Thanks Andy.

  • Castlemilk does seem to have improved more than many other areas of a similar makeup. Too bad the large gangs of neds still run wild in many parts of the area, and within 10-15 year will probably look like a slum.

  • that was strange a used ta live in mitchell flats yrs yrs ago block 3 the place is totally diffrent now cheers for uploading this brings back alot of good memories

  • great photo`s andy, i left the "milk" 45 years ago and the changes in that short time are phenomenal, the machrie shops snap brought back some memories, was the bookies not the first fish and chip shop in castlemilk, back about 1960?, my family were one of the first to move there in 1955, croftfoot drive

  • wow, that jerked me a tear, nice to see the bookies and the shops, i remember my maw getting in there to buy her wool at old SAUNDERS next to the chemists.... that was fantastic. i`m now living in Spain. BYE!!

  • Hi Andy,I was back in Castlemilk for the first time in 17yrs last may,and the changes shocked me.But i'm glad they are for the best,Machrie was a complete shock to me.Seeing that all the old Tenements were gone and you could look straight down onto castlemilk drive and Croftfoot.I must have taken at least 100 pics around my auld close.

  • Thanks for your comments, the first pic is actually ardencraig road just across from the chapel, the bookies and shops are now gone and new housing are in their place.Check out the castlemilk demo or castlemilk stables video, you may like them too.

  • come to think about it,the first pic has my auld close on it.would the first pic be of Castlemilk drive just across from Machrie Dr. 10 out of 10 for a great vid Andy.

  • its a very good film andy. 10/10

  • Thanks for the comment, have you seen castlemilk demo or castlemilk stables vid?.
