Some problems intrinsically come with higher populations. Environmental damage isn't necessarily one of them. Assume the population remains stable at our current 308 million people. One will find, upon extrapolation into the future, that everything you named still gets progressively worse. The difference between 600 million people in the USA and 300 million is quite simply the rate at which the country decays. Some problems intrinsically come with higher populations. Environmental damage isn't necessarily one of them. Envir damage can occur exclusive of high population; whilst things such as general crowdedness, urban sprawl, decreased life expectancies and elevated crime rates usually accompany it.

Assume the population remains stable at our current 308 million people. One will find, upon extrapolation into the future, that everything you named still gets progressively worse. The difference between 600 million people in the USA and 300 million is quite simply the rate at which the country decays. So one's stance on immigration laws is essentially one's understanding of the inevitability of our societal 'putrefaction' and the futility of environmental reversion/stability. To me, at least.

There are a plethora of countries that, while not having the raw amount of people as the US, have far greater population densities whilst remaining comparatively better. A large population isn't the problem at all; it's mostly the type of people who populate the country. Sadly, the average American cares not how they may negatively affect their country.

I don’t know any rational person who blames declining QOL solely on immigration. But 'more people' will be the case as long as the birth rate here exceeds the death rate; regardless of immigration. The people that I encounter don't see immigration as a negative because of more people, however, but as a negative because of the quality of the immigrants.

Environmentally speaking, however, it doesn't matter if there are 600m people in the US or only 300m and the other 300m somewhere else, as we all inhabit the same planet. If you're worried about pollution, then don't. Secure borders mean nothing in terms of environmental protection.

In the list I gave you, almost all of those items are occurring in this country now: species extinctions, habitat loss, topsoil loss, depletion of aquifers, depletion of minerals and fossil fuels, destruction of forests, chemical pollution. Limiting our population is a requirement for preserving our environment.

However, pollution and environmental destruction in one location does affect the world as a whole; albeit not as much as where the pollution is occurring. Something like depletion of minerals and fossil fuels or rain forest destruction will ultimately affect every living thing that inhabits the planet.

The earth is dying: global warming, massive species extinctions, more powerful storms, habitat loss, topsoil loss, depletion of aquifers, depletion of minerals and fossil fuels, destruction of rainforests, widespread chemical pollution, etc. The average American’s QOL is worse than 40 years ago. However, I agree with you that with our fast-growing population, hyper-immigration will eventually end because Americans will be as poor as anyone else.

@notanumber6 So, the Earth is dying? Is the US not on the Earth? If it is, then how exactly will closing the borders here prevent the Earth from dying? Close the borders and rainforest destruction, mass pollution, topsoil loss, powerful storms, habitat loss, depletion of aquifers and depletion of minerals and fossil fuels will continue unabated and the US will STILL be impacted. So what is your point?

@ToaoRaj I agree the US is on the Earth. However, it does not follow that every American is a citizen of the Earth. Please look up the definition of “citizen.” Americans are citizens of the US, to state what truly should be “obvious.” As such, an American “owes allegiance” to the US government and “is entitled to protection from it.” [Merriam-Webster] Until the Earth has a government, which is very unlikely any time in the foreseeable future, there can be no citizen of the Earth.
