Strategically speaking, I do believe Obama did the right thing, specially after McCain said it was offensive. He could make McCain seem dumb by explaining the satire. On the other hand, McCain could twist Obama's endorsement of the cover into a nice speech of how that sort satire is what we could expect of Obama and his candidacy. Thin ice either way. I understand the satire and irony of the cover. It is actully humorous in that light. However, It does speak to a gross misconception that many americans have about the Obamas and I fear that they will remove the satire and claim it as a a conformation &vindication of those illogical beliefs and use it as further propaganda against Obama, which only removes focus from the issues and will continue to fuel this ignorance and bigotry.
