The Skin I Live In is my personal fav of 2011, and I've seen most of the films on your list. At least Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is up there. I'm guessing you did not like The Tree of Life?
I must have seen far more of the worst films of 2011 than the best. For me, 2011 wasn't a great year for cinema. Maybe that's just me. I loved Arietty - but then again, I'm a Studio Ghibli junkie. Loved Poetry. And I see there's plenty of Ryan Gosling movies... he's a sexy man, I'd watch him any day.
I was really glad to see Miranda July's The Future on your list! The movie is wonderfully quirky yet deeply moving like "Me & You & Everyone We Know" was. I'm currently reading her book "It Chooses You" which is about her interviewing people from the Pennysaver, including Joe who was the hair dryer man in the movie. It's great stuff.I know she is probably an aquired taste for most people, but thanks for give her some love!
@colaguy29229 you'd be right on the "aguired" taste part, but i was a big fan of July's first film and The Future came about and your right, it was a quirky often surreal film which is strangely moving, mostly because July isn't always concerned with the quirks but at the bigger picture at hand. Even though, the cat was a stroke of genius.
Wow, a worthy and trustworthy list! I am soooooooo soooooooooooo soooooooooo glad you didn't have Source Code or Planet of the Apes listed. Everytime I encounter Source Code on someone's top ten list I sincerely question that person's judgement. Have a wonderful New Year! Thanks for all your posted reviews.
@scifiwritir1 thanks for emphasising the "trustworthy" part. As for Blockbuster films being in a best of the year list, well most on Youtube only see those films (most but not all) as there are only multiplex's .However, in terms of Rise of the Planet of the Apes it was one of the better blockbusters as was Source Code. Intellegent and well executated and fun Best films of the year? no, so you are correct. Hope the New Year serves you well and thanks for the commnet.
@Thecriticwithamouth :-) Oh gosh, I hope I don't sound like someone who needs to be told I am correct. I suppose it was just the writer in me. I get invested in films and I felt the happy "Surprise, your source code works better than you imagined" was a bit of a cheat. I don't mind happy endings but it felt like an afterthought tagged on to make audiences happy. That's all. Planet of the Apes was good as well.
@scottmorrison23 Jane eyre, perfect sense, contagion and beginners were 4 i would have out in if it were top 35 but then this list would be getting a bit silly like last years.
@Thecriticwithamouth It was my favorite this year! It's on my Tv almost all the time when I'm working and stuff just because I love it so much! Midnight in Paris and Drive were also highlights this year! Did you see Take Shelter?
@scottmorrison23 I should probably see beginners again but if it is any consilation Miranda July is married to Mike Mills, she's the director of the Future and is the other creative half of the mills family. I did see take shelter which i enjoyed if only for Michael Shannon
@komalrocky I'M BRTISH. Film's come out at different times over here than in America, so i CAN count them as 2011 because they came out NATIONWIDE in 2011
