intersting, 30yrs n still is watchable , looking at the drama mask faces wonder why gave such a dramatic chin. Shows still important is the story regardless of technology.
@JonO387, actually they were the first to do it (Daniel Langlois, then his company Sofftimage that was sold later on to Microsoft). And at the time yeah that's the best they could do : being the very first to produce a full numerical 3D animation... A year later they were the first to create a stereoscopic 3D computerized IMAX animation, presented at the Expo in Vancouver (1986). From Montreal, these guys have revolutionized computer animation and the movie industry in general.
@HawkFest It's just that the face looks very different from the rest of it. I understand the restrictions of the time. I just think they could have done better.
Wow! it's been ages since i've seen this piece! the one bit where he grew multiple arms always creeped me out as a child... the echoing laughter....*shivers*
Back in the time this was made, i only remember the final part when the man is turning to dust... today i could understand the full story... thank you so much for sharing this :)
i knew that movie, but today i learned that Pierre Lachapelle leads a company that makes 3delight a renderer, which i've been using and studying for some time. And Daniel Langlois founded Softimage, i think i vaguely knew he was involved in Tony de Peltrie. Now lets' check the 2 other directors, Philippe Bergeron ... interesting, he's an actor and is in 'iron man 2' as Detective Lemieux :) and Pierre Robidoux .... cant find much but i think he's involved in their recent animated movie.
@Gmancrap Upon Googling a bit of the lyrics given, it appears as if the song at the end never existed as an actual song, and was made only for this short film.
I saw this elsewhere billed as 'Piano Man Disturbing Animation' at a dude called davehastings' channel. Dave has a point, certain points in the film make it seem like it was made while on acid...:-/. But great effort for 1985! 4/5!
The first film make in Softimage...

I like how he turned into a stone at the end, just incase nobody caught on that he was stoned.

It looks pretty good, but his face is seriously fucked up. Is this really the best they could do?
JonO387 7 months ago
@JonO387 Dude, it's 1985. Do you realise how difficult it is to animate, light and render humans? x

@nanimawa That's why I said that the rest of it looked a lot better and asked it that's really the best they could do.

I find the first part of this very touching. It strikes a chord with me for some unknown reason.

Whats the song at the end?

They suppose to use this CGI on the
Skeleton terminator back in the 80's.
But they use stop motion instead

Yeah that was my conclusion. I tried the same thing. Thats strange tho because it seems the song fades out instead of simply stopping.

J'avais assisté au lancement de ce film précurseur à l'Université de Montréal. On avait aussi eu droit au "making of'. Fantastique!

C'est un beau travail danimation aujourd'hui avec l'avancement des logiciels de 3d.
J'imagine le travail colossal que les auteurs ont dû faire a l'époque...
c'est le début d'une révolution
Chapeau messieurs!

I first saw this nearly a quarter ofa century ago and was amazed by it. I've looked for it several times before. It still impresses today. Thanks

Thank you for this video ; I first saw it in Montreal.
I was an exposant at "Images du Futur", one of the very first exhibitions around computer art.
As I know, It can be found on a DVD : "computer animation".
