An earlier post may have covered this, but this song describes a birthday party for Paul McCartney that Micky Dolenz attended--the woman he describes would eventually be his wife, and the title was the punch line from "Steptoe and Son"...he had no clue what it meant (hence the "Alternate Title" in England)!
Micky wrote this song and some of them did play they're own instruments. Peter played, so did Mike, and Micky can obviously play drums. Davy couldn't really but he was cute so who cares?
is why on the UK version of the single you see the song called "Alternative Title" because RSG was too rude so they told Micky to choose an Alternative title... Micky was actually very angry in this footage, forget car doors and telephones, i think he was pissed off enough to tear apart a whole bus with his bare hands. It was a dispute with the producers a few minutes before they'd filmed this lipsynching (Micky was hiding swear words w/ his hand)
Actually, randy=horny and Scouse=Liverpudlian. The phrase was taken from "'Till Death Do We Part", remade in the US as "All in the Family". I see echoes of the main character, Alf Garnett, in Micky's anger. I don't know if he's anything like Archie Bunker, though.
Than I'll take you at your word - its a tablecloth. It stands to reason, as they're going out of their way to goof on the whole Beatles experience. Someone must have had a poncho on, and Mickey ridiculed it by wearing a tablecloth.
No, actually I'm a big fan, and have been from the early days. I honestly didn't realize it was a tablecloth. Hope you didn't mind the cheeky comment, it was all in good fun.
Just saw Micky and Coco in concert Fri Nite. I really enjoyed it. I was in the 8th grade again.
They did some songs that weren't theirs. Purple Haze, Johnny B. Goode, and Different Drum. Mike had written that for Linda Ronstadt b4 the Monkees and when she was with the Stone Ponies.
I would rather he had done this, No Time and others.
I was singing along with DW Washburn and the guy next to me was amazed that I knew ALL the songs.

Mike Nesmith= Kevin Jonas because there kind of the mind of the group and they write alot of the songs. Mickey Dolenz= Joe Jonas because there both crazy and love to funny. Peter Tork + Davy Jones= Nick Jonas because they all have a fun yet serious side. :) heheh i love mickey! hes my favorite!
STUNNASHADES- NEVER compare the Monkees to the Jonas Brothers. Ever. While The Monkees were controlled by the establishment, they revolted and became more than a bubblegum boy band for 10 years olds to drool over. And BTW, Micky doesn't have an e in it.
im not saying that the jonas brothers are better than the monkees, im saying there alike in the way girls drool over them and chase them. sorry i must have mispelled, im a HUGE monkees fan i know all there songs, there amazing!
what madness! that is just silly, i used to have one of those tablecloth rug things that micky is wearing and i used to wear it. so.........yes madness indeed.
I think it's great that they made it obvious that they had to lip sink ... and not actually use their instruments. I think they were under mini strike .. hmmz ... I can't remember if they won ... oh well .. I <3 the Monkees
oh course they lip sinked to the song that was already recorded... they did a weekly tv show and touring would be out of the question. And yes, the first two albums they were primarily 'guests' on their own LP.
But they too found it disconcerting they weren't 'seen' as musicians, and they played just about all the instruments on the Headquarters LP.
Before Norman Lear introduced ALL IN THE FAMILY to America in 1971 which was based on a controversial 1960s British TV series entitled TIL DEATH US DO PART, Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees wrote "Randy Scouse Git" after watching TIL DEATH US DO PART in 1967 while hanging out with The Beatles. "Randy Scouse Git" was a constant insult hurled at by Alf Garnett (the original Archie Bunker) at his left-wing socialist Labour son in law Micahel Rawlins (the original Meathead).
Yeah I,ve just not heard it for years, it,s my favourite Monkees song by far. I,m sure it was the b side of one of their big singles , maybe even Daydream Believer. Thanks for the reply and a great post. John
This song is great. It was played as The Mighty Mighty Bosstones were about to go on stage at a concert in Lowell Mass. This song is one of the pioneers of the current ska/punk scene. This song is very influential, good stuff.
I know. But apparently it was used a lot in an old TV show called 'Til Death Do Us Part'. Alf Garnett always called his son-in-law a 'Randy Scouse Git'. In the US version of the show, 'All In The Family', Archie Bunker called his son-in-law 'Meathead'. So 'Randy Scouse Git' is sort of like British for 'Meathead'. That's what I meant.
well..sorta, its not nice anyway...but "randy scouse git" isnt that well known a phrase, so it has no translation but what it literally means i guess....
at 1:51, this is where you throw all logic and sanity out the window and just create something so epic and awesome that it can never be duplicated. The utter dischord of the kettle drums, regular drums, bass, lead guitar, piano, and everything else at the end is just too awesome for words.
its too bad that so many people cant look past their being "manufactured" and see the talent because theyre great if you just listen. and after a while they did all play the instruments and were good at it, not to mention their awesome voices =D
they were also great writers but mike was only allowed 2 songs an album! no wonder people thought they were unoriginal, and as for being beatle clones, its only because theyve got talent and their show was just as cute as the beatle movies
At 18 years old I thought that that the Monkees were crap and worshipped The Doors. 25 years on I can see that the Monkees were amazing, transgressive, subversive and cool and that Jim Morrison was a pretentious talentless fake.

I love everything about this video. I love the way everyone's actually playing. I love the way Micky points to Peter to start. I love the way Mike kicks his foot up when he plays that first note, and also the way he (and Davy and Peter) get ready for the cacophony towards the end. And I also love the way Davy has to stand to play the cymbals. This is an awesome video. Thanks for posting!
