  • An earlier post may have covered this, but this song describes a birthday party for Paul McCartney that Micky Dolenz attended--the woman he describes would eventually be his wife, and the title was the punch line from "Steptoe and Son"...he had no clue what it meant (hence the "Alternate Title" in England)!

  • The Monkees and The Beatles were friends.

  • The best songs the Monkees played were written by them. And they did play all their own instruments.

  • Ponchos are always fashionable on him!

  • no it's a PONCHO. and they're not fashionable anymore!

  • It's a PONCHO, and I WISH they were still fashionable.

  • whats a PONCO?

  • I've liked this song since I first heard it. :) I only recently found out "The Four Kings of EMI" was a Beatles reference. Very cool.

  • THAT'S CALLED A PONCO And they were fashionable back then.

  • Gosh! Love this song!

  • Micky wrote this song and some of them did play they're own instruments. Peter played, so did Mike, and Micky can obviously play drums. Davy couldn't really but he was cute so who cares?

  • lmfao they didnt even play ther own instruments and most there songs wer not written by them lulz

they are pop singers any way

  • 30 years? More like 42.

  • LOVE Micky Dolenz, he's soooo hot!!

  • monkees is much greater than the beatles hahahahahaha. monkees is beatle-hater number one

  • Wow... This song is around 30 years old, and it still AWSOME!!!!

    LOVE IT!

  • What a fuggin disgrace. Hahahahaha

  • Just Bitchen!

  • Randy="Perverted" Scouse="Londoner" Git="Idiot"

is why on the UK version of the single you see the song called "Alternative Title" because RSG was too rude so they told Micky to choose an Alternative title... Micky was actually very angry in this footage, forget car doors and telephones, i think he was pissed off enough to tear apart a whole bus with his bare hands. It was a dispute with the producers a few minutes before they'd filmed this lipsynching (Micky was hiding swear words w/ his hand)

  • Actually, randy=horny and Scouse=Liverpudlian. The phrase was taken from "'Till Death Do We Part", remade in the US as "All in the Family". I see echoes of the main character, Alf Garnett, in Micky's anger. I don't know if he's anything like Archie Bunker, though.

  • Correcting my mistake, The series that the line "Randy scouse git" came from was called "Till Death Do Us Part".

  • scouse/scouser is someone from Liverpool and the accent we talk with, you dozy bastard cockneys are from London. Are you thick or just ignorant?

  • nonono, Scouse is liverpoolian.

  • The alternative title in the UK and Holland was actually "Alternate Title" (I have the vinyl copy )

  • It looks like Micky is wearing a rug... lol.

  • I thought it was a tablecloth lol

  • HE IS ACTUALLY WEARING A TABLECLOTH

  • It's a poncho.....a common 1960's hippie fashion

  • it is a tablecloth, I know, I am a big fan

  • A big fan of the Monkees, or of tablecloths?

  • the monkees

  • Than I'll take you at your word - its a tablecloth. It stands to reason, as they're going out of their way to goof on the whole Beatles experience. Someone must have had a poncho on, and Mickey ridiculed it by wearing a tablecloth.

  • you must not like them

  • No, actually I'm a big fan, and have been from the early days. I honestly didn't realize it was a tablecloth. Hope you didn't mind the cheeky comment, it was all in good fun.

  • oh sorry about that, yeah, I forgot where I heard it but I heard that he wore a tablecloth in that video and in no time he wore it

  • Let's hear it for tablecloths

  • Just saw Micky and Coco in concert Fri Nite. I really enjoyed it. I was in the 8th grade again.

They did some songs that weren't theirs. Purple Haze, Johnny B. Goode, and Different Drum. Mike had written that for Linda Ronstadt b4 the Monkees and when she was with the Stone Ponies.

I would rather he had done this, No Time and others.

I was singing along with DW Washburn and the guy next to me was amazed that I knew ALL the songs.

  • STUNNASHADES- NEVER compare the Monkees to the Jonas Brothers. Ever. While The Monkees were controlled by the establishment, they revolted and became more than a bubblegum boy band for 10 years olds to drool over. And BTW, Micky doesn't have an e in it.

  • im not saying that the jonas brothers are better than the monkees, im saying there alike in the way girls drool over them and chase them. sorry i must have mispelled, im a HUGE monkees fan i know all there songs, there amazing!

  • You fail, the jonas brothers are pop trash, the monkees are rock and roll

  • This is such a Silly song! fun!! lol I remeber those clothes they wore!

  • oldy but goldy

  • what madness! that is just silly, i used to have one of those tablecloth rug things that micky is wearing and i used to wear it. so.........yes madness indeed.

  • this is a different recording than the LP version.

  • They probably filmed this 7am and dead-ass tired.

  • Check out Mike's smart ass yawning @ 1:15,

  • Mickey was so brilliant throughout this song...The Monkees are simply legendary!

  • I crack up watching Mike this whole video. WTF is he doing? XD

  • it is about a party he went to and the beatles were there. excellent song.

  • This song has been stuck in my head the past few days.

  • are the 4 kings of E.M.I. the beatles?

  • The 4 kings of EMI are defintely the Beatles

  • I think it's great that they made it obvious that they had to lip sink ... and not actually use their instruments. I think they were under mini strike .. hmmz ... I can't remember if they won ... oh well .. I <3 the Monkees

  • oh course they lip sinked to the song that was already recorded... they did a weekly tv show and touring would be out of the question. And yes, the first two albums they were primarily 'guests' on their own LP.

But they too found it disconcerting they weren't 'seen' as musicians, and they played just about all the instruments on the Headquarters LP.

  • Hey! It's Susan Boyle!

  • LOL omg you're right!

  • LOL!!! That cracked me up!!!

  • haha thanks ! you made my day

    c'est vraiment susan boyle !!!

    LOL

  • And...yes, they are all musicians. You name one big name band that hasn't used studio musicians when recording.

  • This is my all time favorite song ever. The Monkees were totally awesome, I don't care what anyone thinks or says...they were great!

  • This is my favorite!

  • Before Norman Lear introduced ALL IN THE FAMILY to America in 1971 which was based on a controversial 1960s British TV series entitled TIL DEATH US DO PART, Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees wrote "Randy Scouse Git" after watching TIL DEATH US DO PART in 1967 while hanging out with The Beatles. "Randy Scouse Git" was a constant insult hurled at by Alf Garnett (the original Archie Bunker) at his left-wing socialist Labour son in law Micahel Rawlins (the original Meathead).

  • ..And Ray Davies wrote the theme song for "Til Death Do Us Part."

  • I heard that it was horny annoyance leave... that's just what i heard

  • Mickey sez " Why don't you hate what I hate kill what I kill to be free!"

  • "who" not "what"... surely ?

  • I stand corrected.

  • "No.. I.." "Correction: change O to I. So, your name is not Not Wot but Nit Wit." :)

  • Feel what I feel to be free (not kill)

  • Those aren't the correct lyrics.

  • Hmmm...just listened again and realised that I have been wrong all these long years...lol!

  • I searched for this song for months on here and couldn,t find it. Was this not called Alternate Title ?

  • The Monkees couldn't use "Randy Scouse Git" as a title when they played in Europe, so they called it "Alternate Title" (check the description/info).

  • Yeah I,ve just not heard it for years, it,s my favourite Monkees song by far. I,m sure it was the b side of one of their big singles , maybe even Daydream Believer. Thanks for the reply and a great post. John

  • This song is great. It was played as The Mighty Mighty Bosstones were about to go on stage at a concert in Lowell Mass. This song is one of the pioneers of the current ska/punk scene. This song is very influential, good stuff.

  • This has to be one of their best --- One of my favorites by them anyhow. It has more Beatles like sound

  • check out Mike having a big YAWN!!! It's starts at 1:14 mark!!! ;) That's great :)

  • Bugger me, some of you guys don't miss a trick. Nice one :-)

  • 'Randy Scouse Git' is British for 'Meathead'-- sort of.

  • It means horny jerk from Liverpool.

  • I know. But apparently it was used a lot in an old TV show called 'Til Death Do Us Part'. Alf Garnett always called his son-in-law a 'Randy Scouse Git'. In the US version of the show, 'All In The Family', Archie Bunker called his son-in-law 'Meathead'. So 'Randy Scouse Git' is sort of like British for 'Meathead'. That's what I meant.

  • Yeah randy means horny, Scouse is someone from Liverpool and git means someone not nice

  • well..sorta, its not nice anyway...but "randy scouse git" isnt that well known a phrase, so it has no translation but what it literally means i guess....

    i dunno

    i just think it's a funny title

    XD

  • awesome luv it :D

  • This is my favorite song that Dolenz wrote.

  • but why is he wearing an area rug

  • I like at the end when Davy just puts his head in his hand like "Oh Brother!"

BTW, it was announced on Fri that Peter has cancer.

  • That's so sad about Peter :)

  • best monkee song ever..!

i use to work for dolenz, and one morning..

he was at his table clasping onto a cup of hot tea on a cold morning..looking down .. freezing..i said 'hello'..he jerked up..

shook his head and with his head cocked back..with one eye open he said..'what'?!?!?!'....!....?

    haha..memories..classic....

    pedro d.

  • thats sooo cool lol

  • i think it's funny that by the end everyone but micky just looked done with it

  • at 1:51, this is where you throw all logic and sanity out the window and just create something so epic and awesome that it can never be duplicated. The utter dischord of the kettle drums, regular drums, bass, lead guitar, piano, and everything else at the end is just too awesome for words.

  • At 18 years old I thought that that the Monkees were crap and worshipped The Doors. 25 years on I can see that the Monkees were amazing, transgressive, subversive and cool and that Jim Morrison was a pretentious talentless fake.

It's like reaching that point in your life when you realise that Harpo was the REALLY funny one in the Marx Brothers.

  • Yes Tigerboy, Yes! You might want to re-examine the Partridge Family while you are at it. Thems good drinkin' songs!

  • I never noticed the tattoo on Peter's right hand - any idea what that is about?

  • That's the worst lip syncing I have ever seen. Mickey Dolenz isn't even trying.

  • The guys resented not being allowed to really performed. They often did stuff lie this just to agitate the suits!

  • The video isn't synced, smart one.

  • The video isn't sync'd. But I doubt that has much to do with Mickey's hand over his mouth while singing!

  • ah, so very young, no knowledge of the Monkees, poor thing

  • Ah guru. Give me knowledge of the Monkees.

  • He's trying to lip synch to random scatting. You try doing that, it's very hard to match up exactly.

  • i think that's the point. :-) funny

  • Beetls?

This is the Monkees, and it's spelled Beatles.

  • best song by them-but most of their songs were genuinely great pop songs-why were they looked own on so much?...

  • the hall is becoming a joke after putting madonna in there...the monkees shouldve been in there awhile ago

  • I second the motion the MONKEES belong in the Rock and Roll hall of fame.

  • MONKEES IN THE ROCK HALL OF FAME !!!

  • YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I totally want a poncho like Micky's to wear to school. LOL I wonder how many people would look at me funny...

  • can ya even get them anymore....i want one....

    Hehe....yeh wear one to school!!!

    xx

  • when this song kicks in its pure proto punk rock!

  • WILD!

  • Just goes to show how great and colorful songwriter Micky is!

  • Inspired by Micky Dolenz watching an episode of TILL DEATH US DO PART while on tour in the U.K

  • micky's "a day in the life" song. the beatles,& samantha juste in the same song, cute.

  • I love you Micky! :)

  • amen!

  • I love everything about this video. I love the way everyone's actually playing. I love the way Micky points to Peter to start. I love the way Mike kicks his foot up when he plays that first note, and also the way he (and Davy and Peter) get ready for the cacophony towards the end. And I also love the way Davy has to stand to play the cymbals. This is an awesome video. Thanks for posting!

  • I know! I love how Davy plays the drums

  • look at Mike yawning at 1:15!

  • I'm pretty sure he is, he makes faces at other points in the song, mostly at the beginning.

  • You are right! Never noticed that

  • *laughs* Nice way to punctuate the "yellow dress" lyrics. That was cute

  • Best Monkees song about the Beatles ever! Very cool!!!

  • Hehe! Also agreed. Have you heard Mike's song called "I'll Remember You"? He mentions Fred Astair and Ginger, and all the Beatles.

  • mike nesmith's legs sure are long and lean.

  • agreed
