@cgalvez7 you aren't subtracting -2, you are subtracting 2 from 5, because they both have the same variable (c). Since 2 is lower than 5, you always want to subtract the lower number from the highest. You want to get the variables, and numbers on two different sides.

@AsianHideOut To be homeschooled? It was nice, I guess. I liked it. I feel like I got a better education than I would have, had I gone to public school. I never suffered on the social aspect, as many people seem to assume homeschoolers do. I enjoyed getting to do what I wanted when I wanted, and taking my time. However, I feel that it didn't prepare me very well for studying and taking tests, which I have to learn now that I'm in college.

@Laharlrocks no, you get this wrong. Think of it as celsius. if it is -12 outside, and the temperature lowers with -15 degrees. so -12-15= -27, u get it? :)

In real life people don't even do math on paper. Everyone uses a calculator, and for multiple reasons. one: it's quicker 2: it's correct 3: it's easier

this is silly. your equation is 5c+15=2c-12. you subtract the from the smallest algebric term. so you do: -2c -2c and you have 3c+15=-12. all your trying to do is get the c by itself. so you finish by subtracting the 15:  -15 -15 and you have 3c=-27. now, divide by the number next to the c and you have c=-9. that was an example of the steps in solving an equation.

You have to love the focus of Saxon mathematics--examining what you do and not why you do it or what it means. Keep teaching mathematics like they do in other 3rd world countries and wonder why we score the same. It doesn't take much to figure out why the US is behind in mathematics when the focus is on rules without reasons. Where is the mathematical rigor?

This isn't even algebra 1, this is a sixth to seventh grade pre-algebra lesson. The teacher taught it too briefly and poorly, though. He should have explored it through connections and reasons for the students, too, (such as using a scale).
