I actually heard quite the opposite, that it actually did well in Japan but might not do so well in the West. Also, you might not know but Nobuo Uematsu left Square Enix after... Final Fantasy 10 I think?

The creators started the game on ps3, and later will make the port to xbox360. Also the game is very big for a dvd.
