In my opinion, there´s no genre like melodic death metal, from the passion and intensity of bands such as DT,Mourning caress, to the rage and anger of ...let's say, At the gates, Nightrage, etc.
No other genre can put together the same proportions of brutallity and beauty...Have you ever heard mors principium est??? Any doubt disappears. Dark tranquillity occupies a special place in the list of melodic death metal bands.
@EvilestEvil In Flames song writing got very shitty after Whoracle. They have a difficult time in concert playing the albums requiring three guitarists. Jesper also just left the band recently and they plan to release another very shitty album with little to no "harsh vocals." Lunar Strain with Mikael was better than Skydancer with Anders anyways.

C'mon DT had kept constant in making good death metal rather than IF or Soilwork, the old in flames was great like in the jester race, also most of DT's lyrics are far deeper. now is hard to tell who is better if DT or IF, they sound completely different...

nooo a lot of people complain about melodic death metal, maybe because it's a genre still revolving around the ideas of the three albums (two rather brilliant) that popularized it, ten years ago.
But metal must remain pure, right?! Stagnancy > change seems to be the motto of the entire genre.

I disagree. I don't think In Flames has gotten shitty. I still prefer their old sound, but I love songs like My Sweet Shadow and Dead End. The remix for Cloud Connected is also great. However, I agree that Dark Tranquillity is far superior.
everything after clayman is pure garbage. they got softer and softer every album cuz Jens systematically kicked out all the founding members. reroute to remain is the straw that broke the camel's back.. funny enough a couple of the founding inflames members went into DT after Jens kicked em out.

In my oppinion,DT is much better than In Flames.....but Children Of Bodom is NOT overrated and they ´re playing Power/Thrash Metal,only the Vocals are like Melo Death vocal.And so you can´t compare them.
As much as i love Kalmah, just in my opinion, DT and Shade Empire are probably my fav in Melo Death... Illnath is the best Melo Black Metal there is.. you should check em out if you havn't already... and CoB ain't a piece of shit... I think they're pretty good, just as you said... kinda ovverated...
The only problem with In Flames is if you like one CD, good luck finding another one with the same sound - In Flames does not have enough consistency.

Consistency shouldn't be about making exactly the same sound over and over again in every new album. Consistency should be implemented in making high quality music.

I don't really like In Flames, myself, any era, I don't mind the earlier MDM stuff but I wouldn't listen to it by choice and the newer metalcore/emo type shit they're putting out hurts my ears.

This is probably my favorite DT song, after hundreds of listens through their discography over the years and varying levels of love and hate. Damage Done, Character and Fiction permanently gave them their place as my favorite metal band.
I hope you guys keep going to their shows so they keep coming back to America, they are great live.

yep definately they are more technical and skilled. but concerning the talent of songwriting I think dark tranquillity is at least as talented. just think of petruccis sometimes 'superflous' shredding solos, they dont fit in the actual track in many cases. or think of catchiness. but when we are talking about being technical I think eg. the album The Gallery by dark tranquillity is worth mentioning, it contains a lot of killer riffs which are quite hard to play.

I don't really like In Flames, myself, any era, I don't mind the earlier MDM stuff but I wouldn't listen to it by choice and the newer metalcore/emo type shit they're putting out hurts my ears.

Yer they swapped, for the better too, the first album of both these bands sucked. Stanne didn't match In Flames' music, while Anders didn't match DT's early stuff.
Both bands went on to write much better music.

This is probably my favorite DT song, after hundreds of listens through their discography over the years and varying levels of love and hate. Damage Done, Character and Fiction permanently gave them their place as my favorite metal band.
I hope you guys keep going to their shows so they keep coming back to America, they are great live.

In what way? John petrucci can probably play faster, and sweep better than the guitarists from the band. Who gives a shit? John petrucci cannot write death metal. These guys are writing some of the best death metal around, that makes them more musically talented at death metal. Not to mention Dark Tranquillitys role is not to show how talented they are on their instruments.

yep definately they are more technical and skilled. but concerning the talent of songwriting I think dark tranquillity is at least as talented. just think of petruccis sometimes 'superflous' shredding solos, they dont fit in the actual track in many cases. or think of catchiness. but when we are talking about being technical I think eg. the album The Gallery by dark tranquillity is worth mentioning, it contains a lot of killer riffs which are quite hard to play.
