  • Well, see what WP eventually proposed in 2012 regarding the Ministerial Salary. This is a must watch. Search in youtube for Workers' Party - "First World Parliament" - Ministerial Salary Debate 2012.

Sylvia Lim, for all your talking here, you came up with no better solution, and in fact WP ended up being insincere and secretive in Parliament, unwilling to share inputs with Ministerial Salary Committee, only focusing on taking swipes at PAP.

  • I've never seen such a courageous woman oppisition party member. Sylvia is an intelligently awesome lady. She speaks with brilliantly articulated words. Such a scintillating speech. I kind of fall in love with her demeanour .

  • anyone knows where to find the reply video to this speech or something?

  • FANTASTIC!!!

  • Let me imagine what I'll think if I were an MP there.

"Luckily she's only an NCMP. We'll still get our obscene pay, just vote wisely =)"

"OMG. I hope this stays within the four walls"

"What's wrong with this woman? Is she saying that she doesn't want high pays?"

"Does she really think we're here to serve the nation? What a joke."

"I was promised a seat and a fat pay check in exchange for my vote in parliament. If not how do you think I got here?"

  • i am so proud to see and for once a singaporean have come forward courageously, bravely and ernestly spoken so vividly why the pap have to be revamped and be interropgated of their intentions, policy making and future plannings for the sake of singapore and singaporeans as a whole.... it has been so long that one party is so crippling and deceiving the emotional and physical stability in singapore, well done sylvia and to all the opposition party that fight for the singaporeans......

  • Seen this twice and each time the speech resonated even stronger. If our PAP ministers cannot "hear" her succinct and well-articulated messages, how can they claim to "share" the same sentiments and aspirations of the people?

  • Slyvia, FIVE STARS to you, well spoken, you deserve every respect from the voters!!!

  • Slyvia, FIVE STAR to you, well spoken, you deserve every respect from the voters!!!

  • look at the pap cronies squirming in their seats.... they know what they are doing is wrong, but they have decided to sell their souls!

  • was this ever shown on tv?!

  • @vistory It was never shown on tv and even if it was shown, it will be heavily edited. That's how biased our local media is.

  • Can Minister and Singaporean Share the Same Dream???

To quote a Member of Public said that Who are we trying to kid? Before we start talking about dying for Singapore, let us look at our leaders. We are told we cannot get good leaders unless we pay Top Dollar, so WHY EXPECT MORE from the rest of us?

  • Isit just me, or is half of the ppl there asleep? how Professional *rolls eyes* we're paying them 15k to sleep.

  • Ms Sylvia Lim.. by any chance if S,pore need a chance .. for a new goverment and a new legend.. You will be the first Choice LADY PM in Singapore for the FIRST TIME !

  • THANK YOU, PAP FOR THE DICTATORSHIP, NEPOTISM AND TYRANNY THAT YOU WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR BY ALL SINGAPOREANS IN FUTURE.

THANK YOU, PAP FOR THE WAY YOU ABUSED, MANIPULATED AND VIOLATED IT TO SINGAPOREANS & TO THE NATION.

    THANK YOU, PAP!

  • Sylvia Lim is such a Goddess!

  • keep it up, we will vote you.

  • Very insightful argument! Good to have her speaking in parliament.

  • salute to sylivia

  • SINGAPORE PARLIAMENT HAS BEEN HIJACKED BY THE CROOKS (PAP)

SINGAPOREANS HAVE THE RIGHTTO SEIZE IT BACK FROM THEM!

    VOTE PAP OUT!

  • well said.

  • This lady is good. Not just good but bloody good.

  • Those ministers were switching off!! just like wat i did during my school days! same body language! hahaha. they were thinking "wow u wanna take away my increment?!" LOL

  • You can see those ministers behind expressions showing disagreements to what she said, only those good ministers would listen and some totally switched off.

  • this is good! but of cos, if she becomes MP, what salary does she want then? How much then is not too much? or over the limit? 5k??

  • @cptpecs as a MP is ard 10k or plus abit bah. not much. those other minister with millions are in those ministry

    appointments.

  • 鬼迷心窍’才造成今天的局面。

  • Making the 1st step is always uncertain just recall those 1st day you go for your interview.

Not all of us succeeded in our 1st job or happy with your 1st job. But it does make a different in your life. A friend of mine was not performing in his last job, he came to me and asked how he can make it in life. I told him just give up your current job and start a new, who's know it turn out to be better or worse?

As long as you live the most out from it. It turn out better for him. What I am trying

  • Very well said!

  • Very well said!

    She is my idol ^^

  • dear singaporean, how can you vote her out. wp are really a party care for the people

  • our leaders shd not use GDP growth as a measure of their performance (any country can easily import foreigners to boost growth.. a no-brainer). instead they shd work towards improving the quality of life for singaporeans (higher wages, fewer working hours..etc..). Like the famous UBS report "prices and earnings" said, we as much closer to moscow than switzerland in terms of quality of life.

  • people have to slog their whole lives to pay off their 30-year mortgages. ministers' salaries are hitting astronomical levels (why we need so many highly-paid mps for managing such a tiny island baffles me).

  • singapore really needs to "secure its future" by having more voices like Sylvia to speak up for singaporeans. t

  • Wow, what a well argued, sincere and heartfelt speech! I salute this woman from the bottom of my heart for her courage and empathy for the common people. Wish her and her colleagues all the best this week...

  • Wow, what a well argued, sincere, heartfelt speech. I salute this woman from the bottom of my heart for her bravery and empathy for the common people. Wish her and her colleagues all the best this coming week...

  • "Minister Teo mentioned it was not right to look at how much political leaders else where earn because our ministers cannot become ministers in other countries.."

    what rubbish is this!?!

of course they cannot be ministers in other countries.. you don't have to tell me a fact, Minister Teo.

what we need is a real good reason behind why their salaries are so much higher than other political leaders in other countries. comparing it with leaders in other countries is actually the best measure.

  • See all the Pap ministers looking not very interested because their pay is at stake when our HERO slams the ministers

  • oh no wonder they wanna to increase GST after election la, otherwise no pay raise

  • Thanks for representing the voice of Singaporeans. Indeed we want more of such checks and balances to ensure that our national 'Gold' which we own is put to the best use. We cannot allow such critical propositions to be dismissed anymore, can we?

  • well done sylvia, when are u coming to our constituency

  • I really think there's nothing you can do. There are too many apathetic voters around.

  • Sylvia gave all MIW a tight slap. Bravo!

  • high salaries for ministers => greed to get into parliament for self interest => unfair voting systems like GRCs to stay in power => no more democracy

    it's all coming true.

  • Well done. I agree.

  • Sylvia is talking down to an unrepentant group of VILE corrupt creatures. Just watch their black faces.

  • We are a country that is run fine & well, that is not to be denied. But we need a voice to remind that they can do better, that they have blind spots too, & that they are not working for a corporation whereby only the bottomline matters. A defensive stance towards issues that the public is concerned about, is not something we want to see of our leaders.

  • This is how our issues being solve by the parliament...how sad...

  • The PAP has grown our wealth and certainly has not sold our assets away. SIngapore has earned its AAA country rating by Fitch, IMF rankings BECAUSE the PAP gives political stability, manages its funds well and has a first class asset management program! None of the WP candidates have any clear idea how to generate wealth for Singaporeans nor have any credentials to do so.

  • @sonarsee777 I just realised your post is exactly the same as what you post for other opposition party video. Lol .....

  • @sonarsee777 The issue is not on their capability. The issue is whether it is necessary for the IMMENSE pay hike. As servants of the nation, performing well is NOT AN OPTION, it is a MUST. It however is NOT an excuse to increase their salaries in proportion much higher than the rest of the population experiences. Comparing with private sector competition to buy top brains is not logical, because the likelihood of a country buying another country's top brains for their own government is LOW.

  • @sonarsee777

IS TAT RITE ? TAT IS VERY TRUE , I CANNOT ARGUE WITH IT . BUT EVEN THOUGH S'PORE HAS VERY GOOD INTERNATIONAL STANDING BCOS OF THEM , WE STILL NEED FULLY ELECTED OPP MINISTERS TO KEEP THEM IN CHECK , NO MATTER WHAT , THAT DOESN'T MEAN WP PARTY DOES NOT HAVE GREAT CANDIDATES THAT CAN HELP MANAGED THE ECONOMY !! PLS , THEY HAVE BEEN ARD LONG ENOUGH ! THEY HAVE SOLID PLANS FOR SINGAPOREAN'S AT HEART , NOT JUST S'PORE ECONOMY FOR THE PAST 20 YRS !!!

  • "...how sad..."

  • Where can i go to see the response from the house?

  • PAP MPs ARE SLEEPING!!!!

  • I better tell my children to become ministers if they are aiming at becoming rich!

  • freaking well said Who are we trying to kid before we start talking about dying for singapore let us look at our leaders we are told we cannot get good leaders unless we pay top $ so why expect more from us

  • MP share a dream with Singapore citizens ? They can dream but we can't and we will never receive their dream. If they're able to share their account could be much better.

In fact, we are the one who pay them salary to let them succeed their dream... !

  • After all please look at our neighbours are you sure you wan to pay cheap salaries and buy cheap products? Duh..... I don't think so.....

  • Even real estate have a cycle of 8 to 13 yrs,

Why not a government. It is never wrong to shape up SG's economy 1st by storing money and converting money into energy, drive and budget. The budget meant for lower income familes, upgrading, investments etc.

"No growing economy = no money"

    "no money = no honey"

Maybe men in white deserve another 4 yrs and this 4 yrs to address other issues not covered in the past 4 to 5yrs.

  • I dare say someone must have been working real hard to spice up our economy so that citizens may still hold on to their jobs.

eg. "should the government focus on issues that make or break SG's economy more important or is thinking of how to reduce the GST more important"

eg. "should a hospital think of how to improve diagnosis and treatment for critical illness more important or should they think of how to improve the cost of a bottle of cough syrup more important"

  • Have we also forgottened that the value of our fixed assets have grown possibly from 50% to 300% during the last 5 years. For those whom have profited from this did the government do anything wrong?

For a common room rental in a HDB, previous it may have been $350 to $400/mth, now it is $500 to $600 /mth, did you benefit from it? what is the % spike from $350 to $600. Did we praise our MPs or Men in White for making our economy vibrant?

  • Comment removed

  • Out of all the good things our Men in White did, they are now being scrutinised for having a high salary.

Have we fogotten that during year 2007 3rd quarter till 2009's

our economy was surviving pretty well compared to the world leaders from the western side of the globe.

What was the % of jobless ppl.

  • @nexiscyh Are we Singaporeans really that well off? How about the bad investments/ wrong decisions that they have made during the past years? While we average Singaporeans are barely scraping off whatever is left from our monthly hard earn salary and building up savings...our ministers are all so highly paid?! You do realize that the ministers get AT LEAST 100k per month and they got freaking 8 MONTHS BONUS last year 2010!!! That's ridiculous!!! Those are tax payers' money they are getting!!!

  • @byz13 No need to be so frustrated my friend, we are already quite fortunate in SG.

Take a look at our neighbours to the north and south, they don't even have a good hospital to my knowledge and their residents don't have a sense of security living in their own country. Here we are squabbling and feeling so frustrated abt our governments. We should be thankful. Nevertheless, our MPs should think of better ways to help citizens cope with raising cost of living.

  • If their pay drop will they still support PAP. It will good to test them.

  • Great!!

  • vote sylvia into parliament as a full minister.

    she deserves it !

sllvia is worth every dollar of the singaporean.

vote for sylvia this may 7 election.

  • Omg.... A very good speech !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I guess what President Obama does when he watches this .

  • Great points, great articulation!

She's a precious asset to Singapore Inc.

  • @achahei

IF THE CABINET MINISTERS CAN GET TOP DOLLARS IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR , ASK THEM TO GO AHEAD LAH !! WHAT IS THE PROBLEM ? THEY SAY THEY DID A GOOD JOB , DID THEY ?? IF SO , ASK THEM TO PROVE IT , JUST PROVE IT !! TALK IS CHEAP , IF THIER PASSION IS IN SINGAPORE & FOR SINGAPOREANS , WHY DID SOME MINISTERS FUMBLED IN SOME OF THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES ? DO THEY DO ENOUGH FOR THE POOR & MIDDLE CLASS ?? I DON'T THINK SO ... ASK YOURSELFS , WHAT HAVE THEY DID FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS ?? WE R NT STUPID

  • Ehrms. I think she need to promise that WP will cut their own pay if they manage to take power. That is a promise. If they take power, and become ministers themselves and still keep the same pay, I don't see any difference.

  • Must watch!

  • LKY and LHL now !

  • sylvia lim MUST be elected as MP, it is pointless for her to be a Non-Constituency MP with no voting power.

  • The reactions from the unconcerned MPs really angers me~ She speaks for us!

  • Great speech!!!!! Go Silvia Lim!!

  • 2 dislikes = LKY + LSL ?

  • pls send her into parliment as an elected MP...she deserves it, for:

    1. able to present her arguement well

    2. she paid her dues as a contestent, having to work the ground well

pls send her into parliment as an elected MP....

    cheers

  • Fantastic. Sylvia Lim really epitomizes the model of extraordinary courage, to look at these ministers (seen in video, tired, shuffling, bored, listless, tensed) in their eyes and to deliver this convincing and well researched speech with such fearlessness and aplomb. What a woman! You truly exemplify the word "leadership". I hope that you and your team are voted in, in a hands-down win. A fierce voice of reason, counter-balance and empathy for the common folk of Singapore is sorely needed now.

  • Very good speech!!! We should more of such MP's in Parliament to bring up the quality of speeches and debates.

  • You want talent you have to pay top dollar.

did you see top CEOs joining the government? Why would they want if it is low pay and high responsibility. they only have to make sure the company bottomline is good. If not, they can always join another company.

But as a minister you do not have that option.

as an analogy, does anyone here thinks that he can take the responsibilities of a CEO but get paid as a engineer, just for the passion? i rest my case.

  • @kohkoksuan

Talent like Tin Pei Ling one presumes? Pull the other one, it's got bells on!

  • @kohkoksuan, same old analogy you have, a minister is to serve the people not to earn big bucks!! You like to earn big bucks and no power, move ahead to private sector and test your ability.

Politicians who earn millions and hold power can only prove one thing, I let you guess, if you are smart, you will know.

  • @kohkoksuan People do venture into politics without monetary rewards. Just look at your MM. Was he attracted to politics because of a big fat check when he first started? Just read his memoirs. Its about passion to make a change for the people. To give another example, scientist are not well paid relative to amount of stress and job insecurity inherant in the vocation. However, many people still do venture into science......

  • @kohkoksuan I think even more so in politics one has to attract NOT talents but people with talents AND passion for improving lives for people. These people will come forward without the lure of monetary rewards. I'm not suggesting that the pay of ministers should be th

  • I like how she referenced and spoke so confidently. She's brilliant.

  • wuahah i love the cartoon analogy . Whoever has the gold makes the rules.. THe Golden rule!

  • why is she keep reading the paper? who gives this idea to her? the "paper"?

  • @bluekickindonkey, that is 10 mins long of speech, I bet you can't even read more than 1 min without reading the paper, donkey.

  • @bluekickindonkey is this the first time you seen a speech from parliament? even PM LHL keeps reading from paper. do you really need answers for your 'questions' or you are just trolling?

  • We need ms Sylvia lim... I think no woman speak like her in parliament... Well done ms lim !!!

  • The PAP says they need to pay top dollar to attract the top talent. My mind agrees, but my heart simply cannot.

  • Liberté, égalité, fraternité

    Revolution!

  • YES !!! We need more of these unsung heros in the parliament

Not those useless PAP YES MEN who can only say yes yes yes or those who function like broken down voice recorders ( reiterate those points which PAP said )

  • Bravo! An invaluable national asset, she richly deserves her place in Parliament.

  • All got their two balls inside their unable to say anything. My true SINGAPORE idol !

  • Great speech , whoever has the gold make the rules !!! Lol

  • I HAVE FOUND MY TRUE LOVE

  • I want to marry her!!!!!!!!

  • ...thank you. well said... TPL, please audit yourself....

  • Sylvia is excellent!

  • LKY dislike this video.

  • @zacTAG LOL. ><

  • She is absolutely eloquent... unlike ms tin pei ling... LOL

  • Well said!

  • i like how sylvia lim is like a mother lecturing a bunch of ignorant kids on what they have done wrong.

  • so where's the reply?

  • Haha.. How about we hire Obama and tell him we can triple his salary! We'd still save some money Kopi C and more!... :))

  • @jellycomics

SYLVIA LIM WAS RIGHT ! LIKE WHAT SHE SAID , THE MINSTERS IN THE CABINET WAS EARNED AN AVERAGE OF $200,000 PER MONTH ... WHILE AN AVERAGE HARDWORKING SINGAPOREAN WAS EARNING AN AVERAGE OF $2000 PER MONTH ... ITS CRAZY ! IS THEIR JOBS SO TOUGH AS TO JUSTIFY THERE INCOME WHEN IT DOESN'T APPEAR SO ? WHY DOES TAXPAYERS HAVE TO FUEL THEIR LIFESTYLE ? SOME OF THE MINISTERS DID NOT DO THEIR JOBS PROPERLY & YET THINK THEY DESERVED THE $200,000 ... IF LIKE WHAT MM LEE SAID THEY COULD GET

  • @MichaelLong1978 To think that the ministers earn much more than Obama makes me want to puke. Obama's job is global in scope and he is being scrutinised all the time by an articulate, smart and sophisticated electorate. In sharp contrast, our precious ministers have only a small dot and a largely subservient populace to look after. To say that they are the best in the world is laughable and disrespectful of our level of intelligence and understanding. :-(

  • An inspiring speech which rekindles the idealism in our hearts!(we are so conditioned to keep quiet though angry in our hearts) She truly voices out what average Singaporean feels and thinks(Other than those ministers). Those listening in Parliament who dont feel any tugging of their heartstrings for the average Singaporean shouldnt be sitting there!

  • @aswj4896

THE PAP CAN GRANT ANY POLICIES THEY LIKE IN PARLIAMENT , LIKE FOREIGN IMMIGRATION & HDB NEW RULINGS ... WHAT THE HECK DO THEY NOT LEFT CHECKED ? IF THERE IS NOT ENOUGH OPP VOICES BEING HEARD TO OBJECT THERE POLICIES , PARLIAMENT WOULD JUST ACT AS A RUBBER STAMP TO CHOP ANY POLICIES OF PAP... THATS DICTATORSHIP !! & TEMASEK HOLDINGS SCREWED US BY LOSING MULTI-MILLIONS IN CRAP INVESTMENTS......DO THEY NOT TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITIES OF THEIR ACTIONS ??

  • US President gets USD $400,000

How about we hire 10x presidents of the world.

  • well done!!! hammer hammer all the way!!!

  • best!!!

  • I'm wonder how will Ministers/MPs respond and answer to singaporean.

    Well done Sylvia Lim :)

  • Should link and embed this to all the Ministers/MPs on their webpages and ask for their response.
