KOON BEIKI. The song is in Taiwanese with a few Japanese words, just

two, and it is sung on YouTube by an American expat in Taiwan. But it

  • Israel 51, you said ...''I can make out "chostutomastute"[wait a little]. And "sayounala"[bye bye].

Whats the other stuff? '' those words are Japanese: chotto matte ....sayonara.... the other words are all Taiwanese words, called hokklo or Minnan-yu, and if you email me at danbloom in the gmail account, i can tell you all the words in roman letters..... glad you liked it.....

  • I can make out "chostutomastute"[wait a little]. And "sayounala"[bye bye].

    Whats the other stuff?

  • @Israe5l CHOTTO MATTE and SAYONARA

  • @Israe5l phrases such as "amah koon beiki" = grandma cannot sleep.....and "jababurei" = did you eat yet? and JABA = Yes, i ate!......and many more slang and idioms of Hokklo language.....BUSASA? email me as above

  • @Israe5l ...Chotto Matte, Chotto Matte

    AMAH AMAH KOON BEIKI

    AMAH AMAH KOON BEIKI

  • see my new song on Youtube at my site songsterhiragana link called "My Stented Heart" and you can hear the mp3 and the lyrics at my blogpost at "amafubme".

  • I have an idea for this song: I want to find a group of senior citizens at an old's people home in Taiwan who could be organized to learn the words to this song and sing it in Taiwanese the right way, a capella or with some musical accompaniment, too. And then make a new YouTube video of THEIR song.

  • Letter to Libery Times in Taiwan:

    Dear Sirs:

Amah Khung Bekhi 「阿嬤睏未去」◎ Biko Lang

    我最近寫了一首歌並在YouTube上的影片中唱.官方Taiwanese歌名是「阿嬤睏未去」,

    事實上,這首歌是一個熱愛台灣和喜歡學習Taiwanese的外國人在台灣唱的,你可以免費從此連結聽這首歌:

    作者本名 [丹布隆] (Dan Bloom),為美籍資深新聞從業人員;

    翻譯者(Will Chen); 部落格

  • TERRY tells me from Taipei: "First of all, the title should be "Amah Khung Bekhi". The "h" here makes difference. i.e. sit vs. shit. AND....2. Since the song is sung in Taiwanese, it should be written as "阿嬤睏未去" to reflect the true pronounciation....

  • Correction! I am living in Taichung, not Taipei. By the way I hope you can modify Chotto Mah-te into more Japanese like Chotto Mat-te. This chage will please both Taiwanese and Japanese. Try to re-record it

    .

  • Looking for a producer in Taipei now to turn this song into a real CD single with real performers and a real singer with backing band. If you are interested, contact me via the grapevine.

  • A Taiwanese friend teaches me: Thanks for the song. You made my day. By the way, I mean no offense at all on what I am going to say. When I heard you singing one hundred, one hundred, one hundred dollarsin Taiwanes JI BA KO, I felt you should change slightly. Because just slightly incorrect pronouciation of one hundred could lead listeners to womans private parts .You may ask a few of your friends to listen to the song on that section. I just dont want you to get into troubles.

  • Dear Sir

This is Monica. I am 21 years old and I livein Pingtung. I know your song from the "What's up inTaiwan?" blog. As a Taiwanese, I think your song is guitefit with Taiwanese culture. In this song, I hear thefamiliar spoken sentences in Taiwan, especially incountryside. That did touch me and made me happy.

So, would you mind to give me your the MP3 file andthen i could share with my friends. Thanks A LOT.

    Monica

  • Freddy Lim told me today:

    ''haha

    it's funny.

I'll send the link to my friends!''

  • I've sung the song in public once or twice, and the reaction from local people was warm and full of laughter, Lang said. I'm not a professional singer or a performer, so I hope 'Amah Koon Beiki' can be picked up by other singers, expats or Taiwanese bands, to give the song a lift. I've sent demo CDs to Wu Bai and 2moro in Taipei, and to Brian Funshine as well.

  • Lang said that some foreigners overseas have told him that the song, while mostly unintelligible, nevertheless has inspired them to try to learn more Taiwanese words and phrases.

I think of this song as a learning tool, and if it can help foreign people overseas to start getting acquainted with the Taiwanese language, even in a simple and rudimentary way, then cool, Lang said.

  • When asked why he posted the three-minute song on YouTube, the music and video-sharing site, Lang explained: I recorded the song first on a simple tape recorder at home, and then a friend made a short video of me singing the song in the backroom of his clothing store, and his wife put the video up on YouTube.

  • I can't speak Chinese or Taiwanese very well, Lang says. But after living in southern Taiwan for a while, I learned a few phrases in everyday Taiwanese from my friends and students, especially slang terms and idioms, and I put these colorful words into the lyrics of this admittedly goofy song.

  • The song, which Lang calls a love song to Taiwan, is titled Amah Koon Beiki (Grandma Can't Sleep). All the words are in Taiwanese, with a repeating refrain sung with two popular Japanese words meaning just a minute, as well.

  • Expat's Taiwanese novelty song a surprise YouTube hit

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- There's Randy Newman and Weird Al Yankovich putting out cute novelty songs about this and that, and now an expat in Taiwan with the stage name of Biko Lang has created a comical tune he sings in Taiwanese that has garnered almost 12,000 hits on YouTube.

  • The purpose of this novelty song is to entertain listeners around the world, while also giving listeners a brief sampling of some interesting Taiwanese phrases and proverbs. The "chotto matte" refrain is just for rhythm and has very little to do with Taiwan, except that almost everyone knows a few choice words of Japanese in Taiwan, too, even the young kids. So this song, "Grandma cannot sleep", is a novel way to introduce Taiwan to the outside world. In a silly, entertaining way.

  • omigod! i can't believe it, but the hits counter is at 9962 now and will hot 10,000 soon. I just can't believe it has gotten so many hits froma round the world! Amazing, for such a simple novelty song. EMI contacted me about a single, but they never followed up. The producer ran away to China.... sigh

  • I meant: 9000 hits, any day now. When we get to 10,000 around Xmas time, a big blow out party in Swanto Village, Garlic Village, Wu Bai's hometown.

  • ha, pshh, your Taiwanese is funny, ha

  • Gaijinian, yes, pshhh, i be still learning the lingo. niaci hobe, tei wa, wa bakiy, tua kotai, melu, and a million more i will never know.....but i love the sound of Taiwanese, a nice sound language......give me 25 more years...

  • I know the feeling, haha, I'm not saying my Taiwanese sounds any better

I love the sound of it to

where in Taiwan did you live?

  • South island. By the way, Gaijin-san, this little ditty is almost at 8000 hits in just ten months of youtubing. At first, EMI the record label contacted us about putting out a CD or something, but my contact person there moved to China to make money there, and Amah Koon Beiki got left in the files. Still, I am hoping to make a real good CD with music backing and a better singer, maybe a pop singer to give the song what it needs. This is just a demo,

  • South island應該是台南的意思,是吧

    nice, 只不過台南沒什麼風景

I was in Hualien back in the day. Good times.

Well, good luck with the CD then!

    cheers

  • If time allows, check our new New Year Dance 2008 song at dailymotion dot com, or the link above at right. The Amah Koon Beiki song still can be heard here.

  • heaing towards 9000 hits soon, and then 10,000 hits. Then what? An EMI single?

  • soon to be a CD from a major label in Taiwan, stay tuned

  • i like your clown outfit.

  • Cute.

  • good Taiwanese!

  • Thank you for introducing this video to me. haha, you're real show stopper!
