MIDI compatibility was one of the main features we thought would improve the Kaossilator, so the arrival of MIDI ports on the Pro got us seriously excited. Unfortunately, it doesn't support standard note data. The X-Y coordinates are instead sent and received as CC values, meaning that if you want to play the internal synth instruments using a MIDI controller or DAW you'll need to find a way of converting notes to CC.
People keep telling me this thing is great for beginners. Seeing as I have a birthday coming up, what do you guys think of getting this thing as a first piece of equipment (plus cables)?
@gaaratoast It's a great gadget for free-form improvisation. If you are a real beginner I would recommend a Tenori-on. They have a plastic one that's not too pricey.
@gaaratoast Get a regular Kaossilator and a Kaoss Pad (KP3). You'll have a much wider range of things you can do with those two things in place. Buy them used from craigslist or something, you can find great deals.
@gaaratoast I'm still working on it but it has a ton of potential to generate your own sound parts and them manipulate it on the spot or pass it off to another processor (e.g. Electribes or to your PC). Highly recommend it as I have it and an Electribe MX1-SD now.
Well I can't quite afford both the KP3 and Kaoss Pro so I'm going to compromise and get the Kaoss Pro and a Mini KP as that way I will kind of have the best of both worlds. Plus I have a small mixer so I can also hook up my DS-10 and then really be able to make something interesting. I'm also learning to use my Roland MC 303 Groovebox.
This looks fantastic but I'm really unsure whether to get one or not. I already have the original Kaossilator (as well as the Korg DS-10 cart for my Nintendo DS), so I'm thinking maybe I should just buy a KP3 and hook up the Kaossilator to that??
from what i understand, you cannot control the kaossilator itself via midi, however you can use the line in to input sound to the kaossilator and modulate from there
As a stand alone instrument I'm not sure about, though someone like denkitribe could probably belt out a decent tune in realtime with it, maybe something that will fit into a whole setup ?, heres an idea for Korg, how about a multitouch screen roughly the same size of the ipad, though a lil sturdier. That will do all of this but more something that is mix between a lemur, tenori-on, KP2 = something inovative with possably a firewire / USB audio connection, U can call it the KPHD, LOL
yeah the approch is like a mix between an ipod touch or a jazzmutan lemur with a Tenori ON but seriously it's just a weird gadget for DJ, but as a producer or musician, i don't now if it's so usefull.
@zsyrinx: thank you! can you press a chord on it or play a lead line? haven't seen any of this. btw, is there a big latency when hitting the pad? can it replace a pad controller like trigger finger or akai mpd or nanopad?
I'm not too sure about chords. If it's anything close to the Korg Electribe MX-1 synthesis engine, it will have some way of making chords but not from multitouch (multiple fingers).
For latency, I don't have experience with the Kaossilator (regular or Pro) but did play around a bit with the Kaoss Pad KP-3. There is no delay between touching the pad and the effect, much like a Wacom tablet.
it's just like the kaossilator, but more. best explained as a synthesizer you play with an XY pad that lets you record into a loop sampler. And you can add effects over your sounds.

Can someone tell me what cables you need for this? Have one coming in the post next week from america.
I have MIDI cables and 1/4 to 1/4 jack cables already for other things but that's all.

Despite the advertising campaign, this is not a future instrument.
the Roland D2 groovebox already had a XY touch pad with synth, sequencer and effects in-one-box 10 years ago.

The Kaossilator Pro is controllable via MIDI? I may play specific notes via MIDI or is there only the parameter x as in the KP3?

Your right it's not a toy. It's meant to be played and abused. It's a KORG, it can take it.

The Kaossilator Pro and the KP3 are still VERY different. Their features overlap just a tad, but the Pro is not a replacement for the KP3.

@5LiquidSoul: It's a musical phrase synthesizer that uses a XY Pad as its physical interface.

@5LiquidSoul If you look up Korg Kaossilator (not pro) and see if there are any that help your questions.....

I've seen almost all demos of this and I must admit I still don't understand what this product does.
All the demos are like: "look, you can start a drum pattern and make kshhh-pshhh-wow-wow-wow-prrrr-pshhhh".
What is it? A sequencer? An effect? An XY pad?
