  • fuck.. i hate to search the comments from 5 months ago :C

  • 1:20/1:27 O_o. Amazing guitar player !

  • I love the lick from 0:00 to 2:04

  • 1:20 - 1:27 That lick took my breath away.

  • people have to realize one thing. Hendrix was in fact, a living god, but musically he wasn't that good. Sure he had the soul, and it was all that much good with some LSD on top, but despite the awesome guitar solos and the rythym/solo playing that he endorsed, once you have a bit of musical theory, you realize its a bit all of the same, while guthrie has an amazing musical knowledge. So there is no need to compare. Enough said.

  • it bugs me how people say stuff dissin' this guy !!!! why is orginality frowned upon in music now ?

  • Erotic Cakes is one of the best investments I've ever made :)

  • fuckheads no one can be compared to jimi. Jimi was a pioneer in music. He lived during an era were the music he played was totaly new , this guy grew up listening to Hendrix and copying him, so what da fuck?.Hendrix didn't had the chance to grow up listening to modern era music, Jimi basically reinvented guitarplaying.

  • @starblack005 right f'ing on, brother!

  • @brentstuntzner That may have been the most ignorant comment I've read in a while :P

  • aaahhhhh Guthrie Govan is God, it's ok

  • "I'm so tired of listening to this guy - but I'm going to watch every single video of him and complain, because I'm a sad and lonely retard"

  • hey man no need to compare each other, can you play like him? do you think your guitar hero Jimi can play like him?everyone has their own speciality so dont judge them by your dirty words..support each other to be more succesfull but not hate each other

  • OMFG this is the first time I see Guthrie making a mistake!

  • Muito bommmmm!!!!!!!!

    Sou seu fãaaa Govan!!!

  • Honestly, I was expecting Guthrie to stomp on the wah during the entire thing.

  • He is kind of a crazy genius ...

I mean everyone can play this with works ... But improvise it is impossible oO

  • This is amazing in every single way but with ALL RESPECT AND ADMIRATION no body can play like Jimi THE GOD GUITAR Hendrix.

  • Comment removed

  • @LiamCapt wow, just go listen to bieber or whoever it is you listen to, GG doesn't need guys like you commenting on his musicality and awesomeness... i bet u cant even play half as good as him

  • Comment removed

  • @LiamCap

    No, you can't.

  • @nine9live5 I would sell my soul to play half as good as this guy...

  • he looks hella high at the beginning.

  • Agreed, so many 'play in the style' of Jimi and don't sound/play anything like, cynically put Jimi in the tags and get more views

  • Oh, so "Hendrix"is in the track? Really? Please, what makes this track, say, "Hendrix"?

It's a 12 bar blues, that's all. This guy is the King of The Masturbating Guitar.

  • @Negoveioh masturbating guitar? elaborate. i'm confused.

  • @tobiasdick09 it's basically either freestyling or just playing a ton of notes that fit the music, as opposed to an actual composition or piece of music, or atleast that's what I think he is talking about.

  • amazing guitarist!

  • Great playing. Cheers!!!

  • @brentstuntzner what's wrong with you, bell end... spending your life talking shit about Guthrie's videos... How frustrated are you ?!

  • damn..another guitar hero in the world...

  • My test for music used to be 'how insane can this guy play?' Now it's 'when I close my eyes and just listen does the soloing make me feel anything?' Basically is this 'mind' or 'heart' music and is it inspired?

  • @PitchfeverAcademy mind and heart, listen.

  • @brentstuntzner Your understanding of music and guitar in particular is made quite evident by that moronic comment.

  • @Kingding6 Even if his "understanding of music and guitar" isn't that great it doesn't mean he is wrong. If you actually think this SOUNDS great then you have absolutely no taste whatsoever. This is definitely musical masturbation. You have to be a complete noob to think otherwise. I mean come on man you can't be that stupid. I think even Govan himself would agree that this is trash. Shred for the most part is kind of like coked up elevator music anyway. Just dull and pointless.

  • @indian5 Of course I think it sounds good you knob. I like the sound of a guitar played extremley well, so yes, I think it SOUNDS good. What your saying is my opinion on the subjective "SOUND" of this piece is wrong, which is impossible because its an opinion.

  • Are you fucking kidding me? This guy is more so ridiculously good it's unbelievable...

  • Porra! se esse é o estilo "HENDRIX" deve estar no nivel tunado!

  • I dreamed being this good once, than realized air guitar doesn't count, lol

  • yes, i am sure we learned sweep and tapping and hybrid from hendrix....fuck the rest...change the title you dipshit

  • @P00TANARA Hey, I noticed you like to use expletives! That means you're the coolest dude on the internet, right?

If you would gain some comprehension skills, it says "Guthrie Govan playing to a Jimi Hendrix style track." Not "Jimi Hendrix licks played by Guthrie Govan." This is Guthrie's improvisation over a Hendrix style backing track.

    Have a nice day, "dipshit".

  • @ImAggro Wow man I didn't say it was a lack of speed. I said it was his lack of transferring himself into the playing, but that's my OPINION. He is a phenomenal guitar player. Did I say I could match his skill? Nope. Can I play with the skill he has? Nope. But, once again, in my OPINION, I don't think he translates himself into the music as much as I would like. But that's just me.

  • @ImAggro thank you for giving 2 minutes of your miserable life to explain to me word by word

  • this guy is just sick . simply a genius

  • the fingers do the talkin

  • Another argument about passion and soul. Man, with someone like Guthrie's unbelievable and incredible technique, it would be fucking ignorant to say people like him don't have passion/soul. The mere fact that his technique is that superb, means he has it. Imagine the amount of time he put in to perfect his style, how much passion fueled his compositions. That much is evident. This is the wrong genre to be arguing about players having soul. Death metal and the like, now there's a waste of time.

  • @tempuramonster "death metal and the like" is more about riff writing than lead guitar. So your argument that death metal and the like has no soul is BOGUS. Listen to a track called "blinded by fear" by At The Gates, or Sanctity in Darkness by Graveworm, and tell me again that it has no soul. LOL.... Nubcakes

  • @tempuramonster So, you speak of the ignorance of people arguing about the lack of passion in their playing, and then you turn around to contradict yourself. Such wisdom....

  • @ImAggro I know what I said.. Hahaha

  • He's definitely a good guitarist but where he has speed, in my opinion he lacks soul. He for sure has unbelievable skill but, to me isn't driven by passion.

  • @BLane418

You're right, guitarists who are amazing at their instrument don't have any soul, passion or dedication at all! :/. No music is a waste of time, anybody can express themselves any way they want musically and even if only one person 'clicks' with that music, who's to say it's wrong?

  • @BLane418 Since when did the lack of speed mean there was a lack of "soul" or "feel"?

I'm genuinely interested here, as never have I seen it defended by anything sensible.

Do you have some sort of magical meter that scales the passion behind someones playing? I'm pretty sure you don't play to the extent Guthrie does and not have any passion behind it. Every guitar player who keeps on playing has feeling or passion therein. If you didn't feel strongly about something you choose to do, why do it?

  • He's really really good as guitarist, but I can't find the spirit of Hendrix, listening this track. boh...

  • @lucaprofondo He's not trying to sound like Hendrix. The backing track is supposed to be in the vein of Hendrix's music, and Guthrie is just jamming over it, I guess in his own style.

  • @NeverLandQM In that case he could just as well be jamming over 'You Shook me Baby' by Led Zep. In other words this has F all to do with Hendrix's incredible blues playing. Take Red House IOW. JH is in another realm in terms of chord control, feedback control, sound effects, inflexion, phrasing, nuance compared to this 20 notes a second shredding.

  • @NeverLandQM I'm sorry, maybe I have not explained well :-) but the title of the clip is "GG playing in Jimy Hendrix-style, and not: " G G plays on a basis of a song by Jimi Hendrix ... "there's a bit 'difference, is not it?

  • @lucaprofondo The title is "Guthrie Govan playing TO a Jimi Hendrix STYLE track". Not "Guthrie Govan playing in the style of Jimi Hendrix".

    Made my point?

  • @lucaprofondo The backing track...

  • Great playing but not a Hendrix sound; rather, a Govan sound. I am sure that he can sound like Hendrix, though, but I have no problem with him, for this rate occassion at least, sounding like himself while playing in the style ( I guess) of Jimi.

  • The track is Jimmy Hendrix style. Not the playing. The playing is Guthrie Govan style, obviously.

  • this guy plays just like me, hmmm

  • @gotcalves then please post some goddamn videos of your playing!

  • Does not sound like Hendrix

  • @lesgolaces its over a "hendrix" style backing track ie 60's slow blues backing =]

  • @lesgolaces Even if you knew what the title of the video said, and could READ it, your comment would still be useless.

  • Lucky for him, music is subjective.

  • where is : playing to Jimi Hendrix style ? hehehehehehehehehe

  • @lolloandersson Most of the videos in this series are nothing more than GG running his licks over a backing track "in the style of" another guitarist. Whether thats good or bad is up to the listener. For me its like being in a time machine back to the 80s when shredders would run their licks over backing tracks and drum machines and call it a "composition".

  • He's like The Stig. ' Guthrie uses rotosound yellows '

  • @Luisdaa1 Yea he makes one big at 0:10 but manages to make it with style xD His finger slipped

  • guthrie is the greatest player that i ever seen, but... i did not hear hendrix... just my opinion...

  • @davydyyz Thats because he was not trying to sound like hendrix....., He was trying to sound like Guthrie behind a Jimi style backing track, which is much better IN MY OPINION.

  • haha this is amazing, even godlike, but its not anything like hendrix.

  • @theporridgesaidso

The title says he´s playing to a hendrix style TRACK, not he is playing hendrix style.

  • @ML120374

thank you i just about to say that

  • Every time i watch this video it amazes me a new...he´s so good, it can´t be real!

  • ...

  • @Luisdaa1 Guthrie doesn't make 'em! To quote another youtube comment "When Guthrie misses a note, it's not a mistake; it's called creative timing" XD

  • great player, nuff said

  • Good music doesn't need words !

  • I think the key to playing like Guthrie is to just know your instrument really well. Know how all of your scales sound in every key, how the chords fit, how the changes sync up, ect. Whenever I watch him play I think, "Wow that guy is REALLY familiar with improvising on his instrument". He always knows exactly how a lick is going to sound before he plays it.

  • WTF Happened at @ 1:25

  • @Panthur i ask myself the same question everytime i watch this... its got to be some hybrid picking combined with hammer ons but only on 2 strings or something like that...

  • WTF just happened ! 1:25

  • Guthrie is a monster. But he can't play over a Hendrix backing track...

  • needs to slow down sometimes for sense of melody. he has immense talent and is definitely ADHD

  • @littlemissshred Why would he slow down if he doesn't want to.. The guitar is personal...., there is not one right way to play it.....

  • Waow, when i watch Mr Govan i realize how i'm wrong to use my pinky when the ring finger is the magic tool (for him at least) lol, simply better... very inspirational phrasing as usual. THX.

  • this one goes out to all those idiots sayin guthrie cant play a blues

  • @FuckinMetalBitchs haha. Who says he can't play blues? Thats like what he's best at haha.

  • 0:30 LOL he's fuckin insane :D

  • what size are guthries strings?

  • @coolskaterlikeice

Guthrie uses Rotosound Yellows 10 to 46.

  • Great playing... Awesome playing. But this is not Hendrix at all.

    Greetings!

  • @123armando123 he means the backing track, and he is using blues scales too, just fucking ripping them

  • Spot the cheeky behind the nut vibrato? Amongst the rest of the cheeky stuff.

  • for those of you who feel like giving up. do u think guthrie was always a good player. at one point point he must have sucked. just like everybody else

  • @ecgedsel

The funny thing is when I first picked up the guitar I played the most incredible thing anyone ever heard, the sucky thing is I've spent the last 30 years trying to do it again.

  • wow such a great play~!!

  • guthrie govan is on the rise! is so fucking good

    he is unbelievable

    he is a god

  • Yes! I'm the 1000st who likes this! That must be a sign!^^

@tpl2000: you're mostly right, but I think you meant 16th notes at 75 BPM, not quarters ;) And yes I do also think he's improvising.

  • Looks really easy!

  • no hendrix. nothing

  • Brillant musical masturbation. It has nothing to do with Hendrix...........

  • It's like S.R.V. and Paul Gilbert had a love child, or should I say a Voodoo Chile, haha

  • Check out my "Wonderful Slippery Thing" Cover! "Guthrie Govan - Wonderful Slippery Thing (Cover by Joey Jones) "

  • Why was this on the sidebar of a Hendrix video? This guy doesn't have the first clue about Hendrix's music. No one will even know who the hell this guy is in 15 years.

  • @metalliczombie 'This guy doesn't have the first clue about Hendrix's music' - Guthrie has almost encyclopedic guitar knowledge having meticulously studied many players, including the almighty Jimi. Such comments really aren't justified. And just in case you think he is actually trying to emulate Jimi's play here, he is not; he is simply soloing over a backing track which is itself in the style of a Jimi Hendrix track. I appreciate you may have known this but SO many people assume otherwise :)

  • @TearTheRoofOff Robots can't play Hendrix. This guy can't improv without sounding like a pre programmed metronome.

  • @metalliczombie You show me a robot that can play what Govan plays and your vapid point might hold some water. Moreover, your metronome comparison is just fucking retarded. I just dig the way this guy plays, as do many people. Your thorough disliking of his playing is of course neither here nor there; you can think what you wish, but points like these are just so redundant. I agree with your implied sentiments that Hendrix is awesome, and is hands down the patron saint of the electric guitar.

  • @TearTheRoofOff What I'm trying to say is I respect his talent and his hard work that he put in but to me he is no different from guys like Batio, Malmsteen, Romeo, Cooley, and all the other shredders out there. They just start to sound like white noise because none of them can differentiate themselves from the others. There's no room for creativity when you play 2348383 notes a second. I just don't get it.

  • @metalliczombie I can differentiate them for you right now. They shred, Guthrie plays. And he plays better than most. Its called Jazz fusion and the phrasing might be challenging to grasp for somone who holds such little understanding of guitar.

  • @Kingding6 In 20 years nobody will be posting videos on how to "Play like Guthrie" because no one will care. There are literally thousands of people that can play like this. Skill alone doesn't make you a good musician. It takes creativity and this guy has absolutely zero.

  • @metalliczombie Musicians will care. People will care who like something different in a guitar player. your " thousands of people can play like this" statement is flat out wrong and laughable.

  • @Kingding6 Then you need to get out more. Shredding is no longer impressive thanks to everyone wanting to do it. The more guitar players who practice it from a young age, the higher percentage there will be of "shredding" guitar players. There ARE literally thousands of people that can play stuff like this. It's not impressive any more. 80's yes, now no.

  • @metalliczombie No sir, I do not need to get out more. Can I assume what you find impressive in a guitar player is phrasing, among other things? Well, Mr. Govan's phrasing is some of the best I have ever heard, in a Jazz rock context. I can say with a large degree of certainty that there are NOT thousands of guitar players than can play stuff like this, otherwise, they would be on youtube or achieved a small level of fame like Govan has. The fact that you think thousands of players can play

  • @metalliczombie jazz/rock/fusion at the highest level proves you are obviously not a listener or a player of Jazz Fusion.

  • @Kingding6 I didn't say that they play jazz/rock/fusion exclusively. But there are people out there as talented as this guy. I also laughed at you throwing in the "small" amount of fame thing. Nice touch.

  • @metalliczombie Finnaly, you make a half way intelligent statement. Yes, there are unquestionably as talented as Mr. Govan. I would even wager that there are people who have more talent than him on the guitar. That claim is perfectly fine. The thousands of people are better claim, as i had said earlier, is ridiculous. If there were thousands of people out there who could play better than Govan, we would know about them.

  • @Kingding6 Show me one guy who can improvise like guthrie, in all different styles that he does, and I'll give you a thousand dollars. He even gives the legend himself, shawn lane, a run for his money.

  • @tastefulphrasing For me, Shawn will always be the greatest, but Guthrie is def up there.

  • @Kingding6 Shawn Lane is definitely a master at his work.

  • @metalliczombie HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, he has no creativity???? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING!!!???? Have you listened to any of his music? That is all the guy is is creativity. You fool... The guitar players you like dont play fast BECAUSE THEY FUCKING CANT!!!!!, Since when does speed mean you have no soul. You might as well tell Chopin he had no soul because he plays fast. YOu fucking troll.

  • @tastefulphrasing I'm not a fucking troll. This guy sounds just like thousands of other guitar players. Nothing unique at all about his playing. How many videos do you think there will be in 40 years about "How to play like Guthrie Govan"? None because he doesn't have his own style. I like guitar players who play fast. Shawn Lane is at least 7 times greater the guitar player than Govan and he was faster too.

  • @metalliczombie Are you kidding? There will probably be so many videos about how to play like him in 40 years. Watch him play "fives" if you don't think he can play fast and with his own unique syle

  • Comment removed

  • @metalliczombie

Guthrie is the only guitar player who can compete with Shawn Lane in my book, and at that point, it's a toss up.

  • @tastefulphrasing Nice username. ;)

I agree 100% with your comment, though I try to take a less in-your-face approach at counter-trolling. :p

  • @metalliczombie he is very, very different to Batio, Malmsteen, Romeo and Cooley. The fact that you cannot hear that is astounding, especially as you seem quite passionate about this subject. Well actually it's not that astounding, since a lot of people will lump a fast, technical player in with all the others by default. What do you think of his playing to Larry Carlton and Jeff Beck style backing tracks?

  • @TearTheRoofOff The Carlton and Beck videos are better I think. His style is closer to those types of players than to Hendrix.

  • @metalliczombie It's worth noting that in none of these videos is he specifically playing in the style of the players on which the backing tracks are stylized.

  • @metalliczombie

buddy, he's one of the few shredders where you can feel what he does. Its very rare to find guitar players like that. Plus, his runs and phrases are way more unique than rusty cooley and malmsteen. And He's pretty God damn creative.

  • @metalliczombie It was on the sidebar of a Hendrix video because it has the word "Hendrix" in the title. Idiot.

  • @deyfuck He's a troll ;D Don't feed it

  • @SanctumZero I'm not a troll. This guy won't be remembered in 15 years. He's a very talented, technical player. No one cares about someone who could play scales. It's about the music you make and his is awful.

  • @deyfuck This guy can't carry Hendrix's guitar strap. Idiot.

  • @metalliczombie die.

  • @fredzeppelin11 Fuck you. Led Zeppelin are the biggest thieves of music in history. Look it up.

  • @metalliczombie it matters not if they copied anything, youre just trolling because you cant appreciate a guthrie as a talented musician.

  • Comment removed

  • @metalliczombie be famous doesn't make you better, hendrix always will be the most influential guitar player, but thats doesn't make him the best, you said that no one will know this guy in 15 years? i say that no one will play the guitar like him in 15 years

  • Dokaz: This man doesn't kill other players, he inspires other players, which is good.

  • please be my music teacher :D

  • Seems like he´s able to speak thru his guitar

  • I really want to know what he uses for his amp and his effects. The tone and effects he uses are fantastic for everthing he plays

  • This is really one of my favorites but; Jimi has never played like this. I'm in love with the all improvisations from Govan but; this is not even close to the Jimi Hendrix Experience style.(but as I said; guhtrie govan is perfect as possible)

  • This is really one of my favorites but; Jimi never played like this. I'm in love with the all improvisations from Govan but; this is not even close to the Jimi Hendrix Experience style.(but as I said; guhtrie govan is perfect as possible)

  • Good lesson in HOW TO PLAY BLUES WITHOUT ANY FEELING WHATSOEVER!

Just do your 300 hits per minute and the entire shredding community calls you a god lol

  • @h0mestudio chill out, just because he's got a shitload of skill and talent doesn't mean you have degrade him like that. he actually has a lot of feeling when he plays, so just because he's better than you doesn't mean you need to troll

  • @h0mestudio 300 "hits" per minute is 5 notes per second, or quarter notes at 75 bpm.

You have to play at least 3 times that fast to be considered a fast player, and to be considered a shredding god you have to have a long, long resume and the ability to mix fast playing with emotion.

Rusty Cooley? Not a god. Just really fucking fast.

Guthrie Govan? Yeah, pretty much a god. This track might not exemplify it, but I get the distinct feeling he's improvising--in which case, he's exempt.

  • @tpl2000 300 notes per minute is when you play sixteenth notes at 75 bpm. Three times that fast is 16th's at 225 bpm, which is faster than Michael Angelo's and Yngwie Malmsteen's fastest runs, which clock at around 210 bpm. However, I agree with the comparison; Rusty Cooley plays fast to play fast, Guthrie actually does something with all those notes flying around.

  • @mad00002 But, there's not to say there is no feeling or passion behind what Rusty does, if not, he wouldn't do it. ;)

  • @ImAggro I agree. He seems to enjoy what he does. ;) I suppose what I'm saying is, Guthrie can convey meanings through music in a more structured, intelligent manner than Rusty, who's music has a somewhat more limited audience.

  • @mad00002 It is obviously pushed towards a rather diminutive fan-base in comparison to Players like Guthrie and the likes.

If I had to choose, Guthrie gets my vote for favorite guitarist any day of the week.

  • @tpl2000 hoo the hell ars you teh tell mar abut moosiC? i have mar own eayrs fank yoeh verey muhch.

  • @tpl2000 wtf theres critieria now? where exactly is that statistsic set in stone? show me, PLEASE. fuk that, there is no standard to be a "fast player"

  • 1:25 made my dick spew in my pants.

    :/

  • is this a jimi hendrix playing style ??? bullshit !

  • @JazzBird90 Jimi Hendrix style track, you fuckin idiot

  • monster player, but this doesn't remind me of Jimi Hendrix at all

  • @TheHeavyMole Did you read the title of the video ?:P

  • @ErlingMK I take it this series of 'Guthrie Govan playing to...' videos is to demonstrate that he is a master of styles (and that's what I hear about him, anyway). I don't expect him to be *exactly* like the players he's copping, but...

  • @TheHeavyMole The backing track is in style of Jimi, the playing is in style of GG

  • 0.07 is fuking insane!

  • Ez lófasz! Úgy vinnyog mint valami kínai videojáték. Ennek semmi köze hendrix stílusához.

  • His hybrid picking is not human...

  • @Luisdaa1 because he's the best in the freakin world, he's improvising too by the way haha

  • @deadseattle UR BORING TROLOLOLOLOLOL

  • This is nothing like Hendrix xD

  • @ACDCFan15Swe i think they changed the name of the video to jimi hendrix style TRACK to prevent trolling that its nothing like Hendrix i think ;p

  • @galatonim It still says its a Jimi Hendrix style track, its nothing like Hendrix style

  • @ACDCFan15Swe Yes it is ahaha. Red house? in A i think.

  • this guy plays so smoothly and accurately, iv got a new favorite guitar player :)
