Do you have some sort of magical meter that scales the passion behind someones playing? I'm pretty sure you don't play to the extent Guthrie does and not have any passion behind it. Every guitar player who keeps on playing has feeling or passion therein. If you didn't feel strongly about something you choose to do, why do it?

Great playing but not a Hendrix sound; rather, a Govan sound. I am sure that he can sound like Hendrix, though, but I have no problem with him, for this rate occassion at least, sounding like himself while playing in the style ( I guess) of Jimi.
@lolloandersson Most of the videos in this series are nothing more than GG running his licks over a backing track "in the style of" another guitarist. Whether thats good or bad is up to the listener. For me its like being in a time machine back to the 80s when shredders would run their licks over backing tracks and drum machines and call it a "composition".

I think the key to playing like Guthrie is to just know your instrument really well. Know how all of your scales sound in every key, how the chords fit, how the changes sync up, ect. Whenever I watch him play I think, "Wow that guy is REALLY familiar with improvising on his instrument". He always knows exactly how a lick is going to sound before he plays it.

buddy, he's one of the few shredders where you can feel what he does. Its very rare to find guitar players like that. Plus, his runs and phrases are way more unique than rusty cooley and malmsteen. And He's pretty God damn creative.

@h0mestudio chill out, just because he's got a shitload of skill and talent doesn't mean you have degrade him like that. he actually has a lot of feeling when he plays, so just because he's better than you doesn't mean you need to troll
@h0mestudio 300 "hits" per minute is 5 notes per second, or quarter notes at 75 bpm.
You have to play at least 3 times that fast to be considered a fast player, and to be considered a shredding god you have to have a long, long resume and the ability to mix fast playing with emotion.
Rusty Cooley? Not a god. Just really fucking fast.
Guthrie Govan? Yeah, pretty much a god. This track might not exemplify it, but I get the distinct feeling he's improvising--in which case, he's exempt.
@tpl2000 300 notes per minute is when you play sixteenth notes at 75 bpm. Three times that fast is 16th's at 225 bpm, which is faster than Michael Angelo's and Yngwie Malmsteen's fastest runs, which clock at around 210 bpm. However, I agree with the comparison; Rusty Cooley plays fast to play fast, Guthrie actually does something with all those notes flying around.
@ImAggro I agree. He seems to enjoy what he does. ;) I suppose what I'm saying is, Guthrie can convey meanings through music in a more structured, intelligent manner than Rusty, who's music has a somewhat more limited audience.

I think the key to playing like Guthrie is to just know your instrument really well. Know how all of your scales sound in every key, how the chords fit, how the changes sync up, ect. Whenever I watch him play I think, "Wow that guy is REALLY familiar with improvising on his instrument". He always knows exactly how a lick is going to sound before he plays it.

Such comments really aren't justified. And just in case you think he is actually trying to emulate Jimi's play here, he is not; he is simply soloing over a backing track which is itself in the style of a Jimi Hendrix track. I appreciate you may have known this but SO many people assume otherwise :)

@TearTheRoofOff What I'm trying to say is I respect his talent and his hard work that he put in but to me he is no different from guys like Batio, Malmsteen, Romeo, Cooley, and all the other shredders out there. They just start to sound like white noise because none of them can differentiate themselves from the others. There's no room for creativity when you play 2348383 notes a second. I just don't get it.

@metalliczombie I can differentiate them for you right now. They shred, Guthrie plays. And he plays better than most. Its called Jazz fusion and the phrasing might be challenging to grasp for somone who holds such little understanding of guitar.

The more guitar players who practice it from a young age, the higher percentage there will be of "shredding" guitar players. There ARE literally thousands of people that can play stuff like this. Well, Mr. Govan's phrasing is some of the best I have ever heard, in a Jazz rock context. I can say with a large degree of certainty that there are NOT thousands of guitar players than can play stuff like this, otherwise, they would be on youtube or achieved a small level of fame like Govan has. I would even wager that there are people who have more talent than him on the guitar. That claim is perfectly fine. The thousands of people are better claim, as i had said earlier, is ridiculous. How many videos do you think there will be in 40 years about "How to play like Guthrie Govan"? None because he doesn't have his own style. I like guitar players who play fast. Shawn Lane is at least 7 times greater the guitar player than Govan and he was faster too.

@metalliczombie he is very, very different to Batio, Malmsteen, Romeo and Cooley. The fact that you cannot hear that is astounding, especially as you seem quite passionate about this subject. Well actually it's not that astounding, since a lot of people will lump a fast, technical player in with all the others by default. What do you think of his playing to Larry Carlton and Jeff Beck style backing tracks?

buddy, he's one of the few shredders where you can feel what he does. Its very rare to find guitar players like that. Plus, his runs and phrases are way more unique than rusty cooley and malmsteen. And He's pretty God damn creative.

This is really one of my favorites but; Jimi has never played like this. I'm in love with the all improvisations from Govan but; this is not even close to the Jimi Hendrix Experience style.(but as I said; guhtrie govan is perfect as possible)

@h0mestudio 300 "hits" per minute is 5 notes per second, or quarter notes at 75 bpm.
You have to play at least 3 times that fast to be considered a fast player, and to be considered a shredding god you have to have a long, long resume and the ability to mix fast playing with emotion.
Rusty Cooley? Not a god. Just really fucking fast.
Guthrie Govan? Yeah, pretty much a god. This track might not exemplify it, but I get the distinct feeling he's improvising--in which case, he's exempt.

@tpl2000 300 notes per minute is when you play sixteenth notes at 75 bpm. Three times that fast is 16th's at 225 bpm, which is faster than Michael Angelo's and Yngwie Malmsteen's fastest runs, which clock at around 210 bpm. However, I agree with the comparison; Rusty Cooley plays fast to play fast, Guthrie actually does something with all those notes flying around.
