lol Gekko for Pres? He care nothing about anyone except himself. His family freinds his own damn daughter. Thats why is character is sooo coool, his is a bad guy that everyone wants to be. Sadly there are too many ppl on WSt. exactly like him.
Even socialist are greedy. Perhaps even more than any other man as they reach for the fruits of OTHER peoples' work. Funny how that seems to be alright while the man who protecs his belongings is - almost per say - a rich bastard. - Makes me sad :(
Greed is good but it depends on for what sake? Greed for greed's sake is not good. It ignores the other parts of the larger system and eventually collapses your system upon itself eventually. Greed for greed's sake is like being smart without being wise.
Greed for or in harmony with the greater good is "good".
Your interpretation of my use of the "system" is incorrect.
The "system" is life. Not the financial system. As a system, life requires the balanced integration of other elements. Society (life) depends upon balance. When one element or part of that system is either too heavily weighted or not weighted enough, the "system" falls apart.
Thus greed for greed's sake creates a disproportionate element which crashes the system. Think "human biology".
"The richest 1% of this country owns 1/2 our country's wealth, $5 trillion. 1/3 of that comes from hard work. 2/3 comes from inheritance, interest on interest accumulating to widows and idiot sons, and what I do... stock and real estate speculation. It's bullshit. You got 90% of the American public out there with little or no net worth. I create nothing. I own. We make the rules, pal. The news, war, peace, famine, upheaval, The price of a paper clip...
We pick that rabbit out of that hat while everybody wonders how the hell we did it. You're not naive enough to think we're living in a democracy, are you, Buddy? It's the free market. You're part of it."...
"Now, in the days of the free market, when we were a top industrial power, there was accountability to the stockholder. The Carnegies, the Mellons, the men that built this empire, did it because it was their money at stake. Today, management has no stake in the company! Altogether, these men sitting up here own less than 3% of the company. Where does Mr. Cromwell put his million-dollar salary?...
Not in Teldar Stock. He owns less than 1%. You own the company. That's right. You, the stockholder. You are all being royally screwed over by these... these bureaucrats with their steak luncheons, hunting and fishing trips, their corporate jets, and golden parachutes...
This is an outrage! You're out of line, Gekko! Teldar Paper, Mr. Cromwell, Teldar Paper has 33 different vice presidents, each earning over $200,000 a year. Now I've spent the last two months analyzing what these guys do. I still can't figure it out. One thing I do know is that our paper company lost $110 million last year. I'll bet half of that was spent in the paperwork going back and forth between these vice presidents."
The cause of the current crisis is that the people who didn't do it right knew they wouldn't get eliminated, and they weren't. We see now the results of being in a democracy rather than a free market. When "the people" "control" what they neither directly observe nor understand there is no accountability. So everyone does what they want regardless of the consequences.
Absolutely right,"GREED IS NOT ONLY GOOD BUT IT'S WHAT MAKES PEOPLE BETTER".Greed is trying better than the rest, working harder, planning your life, exercising self discipline and control and more than anything being responsible for your success or failure. What is the other option?3 kids by the time you are 20 and spend the rest of your life asking why your life sucks while at the same time blaming everyone else for your weakness.Remember we are the end result of the choices that we make.
we got so good at competing, we became number one. but what are we going to do when the trees that are cut down because trees make money because money is the most important, are no more?
this is what we are dealing with now, and we should've realized it a long time ago but we are too into competing that we never see how we can do ourselves in.
None of those things are greed. Greed is simply the desire to have more than one needs or deserves. This can be a positive driving force for those who are willing to put in the hard work, but it can also lead people to seek wealth through unethical or self destructive means. It is greed that compels bank robbers, slave traders, and corporate criminals. To say greed is either good or bad is a gross oversimplification.
@alacranmann Greed is hoarding all for yourself, while making the majority of the income. Greed is having children, but not caring for them. Greed is an awful thing, and to believe we are born with greed is, for lack of a better word, wrong. We're altruistic, it's what makes us work. Greed is what causes the downfall of civilization, it's what caused the downfall of many things.
We're all altruistic, whether we believe it or we don't.
Man,so wrong don't know where to begin.Hoarding?,greed is working harder and better than anyone else therefore by logic I'm getting more than those who don't. Not caring for children?greed makes me try much more than anyone else,so you can give your family a better life. Downfall of civilization?,on the contrary "CONFORMISM",causes your downfall and those around you. Life rewards those who try,not those who settle. Altruistic?,bro you can't be so,when you are broke.
I think your definition of greed isn't the right one. We work hard, yes because we want to earn for ourselves, but that's not greed, we do it because if we don't, we don't eat.
Our altruism is taken from us when we learn we HAVE to work for ourselves. This is the problem of capitalism.
We can re-define words all we want, but the problems will still be there.
More than competition, we need cooperation. More than technology, we need humanity. These things are lost in capitalism because they...
(Continued) aren't profitable. We could shelter the homeless, and reform their lives and habits, but that's not profitable. The capitalist system, while yes, it does innovate technology quicker, is inherently flawed because some group of people are always being hurt.
Oliver Stone being the liberal ,anti Corporate person he is, thought this part was great how it portrays a successful Wall Street guy in a bad light. Wonder if he makes movies for free or limits the profit he will make? or does he try too make as much as possible? If you understand the human condition and economics, Greed is good. Just like he said Greed propels the upword mobility of man kind. Many of us have been taught that it is the greedy person who is holding us down, NOT TRUE!!!!!
i love this movie. but its like marx says that history does repeat itself. strange how this movie ironically points out how greed is good whereas now here we are in a financial meltdown because wall street fat cats fucked around with our money. now our taxes are paying them out because of their greed. i guess it is ironic how greed is good because these guys probably wont end up in jail because nobody can be fully held responsible for the market crash
the "greed" of the guys on Wall Street in the meltdown was propelled by the greed of everyday people. 4% wasn't good enough so people went into funds. They had a few good years then said "Why can't you give me 10% every year?" Workers want to retire earlier and live better on pensions so returns had to be greater. People expected 10% a year on houses they bought. Not the "greed on Wall Street"--WS just fills the market for greed everywhere.
On the DVD commentary Oliver Stone is really pissed off that people like Gordon Gecko so much. He just doesn't get it. Let's see how he ruins the sequel. Gordon Gecko for President. Or another Ronald Reagan!
It's scary to see so many people being proud of being greedy in these comments below.. I hear and see it around me in real life aswell. So it's ok to be greedy.. I hope you arent religious at the same time. That'll really make you hypocrites. But I guess being a hypocrite is ok aswell..Explains alot about the state our race is in.
Greed is´nt good....It clouds your judgement. How many times have you ploughed all your cash on a "good thing" because of past performances only to go tits up, because you are mentally intoxicated by big returns. That is why my friends greed is´nt good
@ACNC1 Ayn Rand actually coined a term called Rational Selfishness. Emotionalist greed is bad, but rational greed where you're careful to plan for your own benefit is a good thing.

don't see the pyramid scheme in pure capitalism?
don't you see the collapse coming because of the 4% who has 98% of the wealth?
it doesn't work that way. you can try to make it work, but it doesn't work.
sure we have products and goods and we have an overstock of crap due to manufacturing, but we get pollution, we get garbage, we lose natural resources like trees that create the word's oxygen.
don't you breath air?

I love that line - "We make the rules, pal. The news, war, peace, famine, upheaval, the price of a paper clip. We pick that rabbit out of a hat while everybody sits around wondering how the hell we did it." I disagree with it - I think it overemphasizes both the role market leaders play in relation to the consumer, and creates a lie about the randomness of the market - but it's a still a great line.
Of course, nothing beats what has become the motto of my life - "Greed...is good."
Really, why do you have a computer when people in Africa have nothing, go and sell your computer, clothes etc. and give the proceeds to charity, after all you having a compuer and them having nothing is greed
