a band at their absolute pinnacle. though it didn't sell nearly as well as Is This It or even Room on Fire, First Impressions of Earth marked a creative peak and a level of musical sophistication so intricate, it was referred to by one of the band members (i can't remember who) as "a scientific achievement." that really does just about sum it up. an amazing and underrated album, and in terms of technical prowess, leaps and bounds ahead of anything they've done before or since.
