  • Holy flaming smoke... Bet the driver had to wear fire resistant clothing for that.

  • I belive that it's a backup in case the steam engine fails - which does happen from time to time - although some engines seem to be more susceptible than others! 46115 Scots Guardsman failed on three occasions I think early in 2010, but 5690 Leander has laboured faithfully and frequently in recent years with no apparent problems.

    This class is the most powerfully steam locomotive to be made for the British rail mainline. Estimated to have over 3300 horsepower. More powerfully than the diesels that replaced it.

    Power isn't speed though.
