Hey all- Having played 2 years now, I have been working on serving primarily because serving should be an advantage. People can put my 2nd wherever they want. You see my issue. So, I have been incorporating a jump in to make my kicker more powerful. Here, Roddick arranges his feet such that he doesn't have to step in, while others like Safin take a step in than jump. Do any of you have a theory on which can be more useful/stable? Does it affect spin/placement ability? Thanks!
check out a website called fuzzy yellow balls(i know it sounds stupid but it's brilliant) they have info on all the different stances and motions plus the pros and cons
I have an answer to most pinpoint(PPt) problems because of Roddick.
The main issue with all server is to push with both legs. Basically, plateform prohibits it and most PPters slide their back foot in. This doesn't allow you to apply any weight on your back foot.
Here Roddick does something very little, incredibly awekward, but yet, it places his feet well to use both legs. No one noticed he actually brings back his front leg?
You read well. He brings it back. He does it on almost each serve.
But what matters is not how, but what. How you bring yourself into a key position isn't important as long as it allows all element to work well.
So, we must be looking for which position. A narrow stance with the non-racket foot little further in front of your chest than your racket foot. Use the front part of your feet and lower your knees.
Can be applied to all pinpoints fast and easy and it will improve your speed.
Again the idea isn't to copy, but to learn how to pinpoint correctly.
Obviously, you won't be looping very wide and very slowly when standing like this. It has the advantage of giving extra leg efficiency, but it kills some degree of rotation compared to a wider stance.
So, you have to spring up. Don't necessarily shorten it down as much as Roddick, simply make a smaller loop to catch up and you'll be fine. Learn how to use hsi foot stance if it suits you and add your own uniqueness into it.
was this a first serve or second serve? i notice his first serve he steps farther into the court then his second. From the looks of this vid i'm thinking second? anyone noe?
Wow, you like to make fun of someone when it applies to yourself. You just made fun of yourself.
Oh and yes I do live a meaningful life (I'm going to college and am part of a World renown music group. What have you done with your life?). But at least I don't disrespect people randomly like you. Pathetic comeback. Oh, and pawned has multiple meanings smart ass. Oh and also, when is wasting time a bad thing? Another thing, from your website, you make fun of a LOT of people. "Waste your time?"

you CANT kill your arm with this shortened motion! thats why maria sharapova has shortened her service motion due to her shoulder problems. having a shorter swing forces to use your other parts of the body(ex. his knee bend)whick takes off the load of your shoulder
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Do not hit this serve unless you want your shoulder to disintegrate.
-- If you make it to the pros, do whatever you want, but it you're playing rec tennis, do not his a serve like his. He abbreviates the motion and puts his shoulders in jeopardy.
yes , thats why he has played for so long and not injured his shoulder seriously? if it was dangerous dont you think his coaches would reccomend him NOT to do it? roddick is awesome , i wouldnt question his technique.
I love his motion, I've tried it myself. Its really compact so less chance something will go wrong. I recommend it for anyone that can't do a full motion.
people who think andy´s serve is about muscle are wrong, it´s all about technique and speed,he uses his leg´s really well, hip rotation and a very fast raquet whip behind his head..I read on it, in a tennis magazine..
He has the deepest racket drop, one of the deepest need bend and he is a rare player to push perfectly evenly off both legs... Regarding uncoiling torque, he is also incredibly twisted and his toss is further back over his head than most top players.
He not only bashes 135-140mph regularly, he is also the serve with the most spin (among those with the highest pace), beating even Sampras with an avg 2400rpm off a FLAT serve...
His example could even benefit each top ten player.
@GueorguiJoukov The fact is though, Sampras had/has a much more effective and technically superior 1st and 2nd serve than Rod and the element of not knowing where Pete placed his serve or what kind of spin shows speed/rpm doesn't matter as long as the serve is unreadable. The top 6 regardless off Roddicks serve pace gage where he hits it thus making the return on his serve significantly easier than one of a Sampras or Fed
Technically superior... can we consider disguise a technical element? If so, yes. if you speak of biomechanical efficiency, Roddick comes in front of any server in history - more spin, more pace, thus more energy.
But, it's true that Sampras' serve had this "oh shit" effect on many players, if nto all of them. There's a video of Federer doing that in 2009, Wimby. That's about as close as we can get to understand Pete's serve effect.
@GueorguiJoukov i think disguise is more important then pace or spin.. roddick had most of his succes when he first cameon the tour. no one was used to the pace of his serve and alot of guys were intimidated. now there are pleany of guys who take on the roddick serve. just look at hewitt and federer. the win loss record says it all. sure roddicks caught up to hewitt but thats only cause hewitt has lost his weapons. now look at federer. one of the best stats in serving on tour every year and...
@GueorguiJoukov .....and its not a big action.. but very well disgused. look at agassi's serve also. not a big guy but well disgused also. most guys on tour can hit big returns, so pace these days doesnt scare anyone. what scares people is a big return.
People think that the abbreviated motions has an influence on your swing while it barely has. Every single serve stops or slows down before accelerating when they meet the trophy pause, so what has gone before barely influence what will go on after.
It's a nice analysis; so many times we think of pace and reaction time while we forgot that a player must first read before reacting. It's also what makes a bad server, when finnaly he finally hits a good serve, being so unstoppable.
...How does it not look flat... He obviously is going through the ball which means a flat serve.. If it was kick, his racket would continue to travel over the ball a little and if it was slice, his racket wouldn't be moving in a straight trajectory.
Also Shadow, watch some of his slow mos. The close up one especially. He is so insanely flexible he performs alot of extra pronation. That ball has some nice spin on it.
that kind of looked like a slice

By not throwing his arm behind him, as does Federer, he increases the damaged done to internal ligaments in his shoulder.
