There is one big fault with this royal family. They support terrible animal cruelty. Everyone knows the torture foxes and minks are subjected to and the awfull force feeding of ducks for Foie Gras but they don't care, they continue to wear and eat these poor animals. But they happen to travel a lot, and them meeting and falling in love with foreign women is not so strange, considering. They couldn't speak Danish only german. And they never counted themselves as Danish either. That is why the war between Denmark and Germany began!

Her mother was originally from Sweden, yes. But her father, the king, was Danish. But the family is descended from the house of Glücksburg, near Flensburg. That doesn't really make them German, as I'm pretty sure Flensburg was under Danish reign back then. Furthermore, it is not really the blood that matters, nationality and the feeling of belonging is more a choice than anything else.

Her father was German. When Christian 9. became king in 1863 the Danish people were furious. They did not want a German king since Denmark was at war with Germany. The reason why this war started in the first place was because the people in Schleswig-Holstein thought of themselves as German. Many of them couldn't speak Danish. You say that it is "the feeling of belonging that is more a choice than anything else", well that is what happened in Schleswig-Holstein back then.

Christian 9. was German and he was married to a German woman. Their son (Frederik 8.) was married to a Swedish woman (oh so Margrethe is a bit more Swedish than I thought :P ). But his son, Christian 10. was married to a German woman and then we have Frederik 9. who is Margrethes father, and he was, as we know, married to a Swedish woman.
