Android will only best other phones if the OS is open to applications without the need for the carrier to get in the way. I figure most carriers will lock the OS and the phone keeping out users from doing what they want with the phone. I hope that doesn't happen though.

Android is very promising. It's only the beginning and it will become better like in any Linux distro. It's funny that we now have AGAIN 3 platforms but in phones. Apple, M$ and Linux. But unlike M$ that has some standards and Apple that has only one piece of hardware to worry about, android is a more difficult project to deal with, since it is geared to run in as many hardware variations as possible. So we have to give the android team and Google some credit for a great engineering effort.

Actually, it's all in Java. Not specifically Linux. It'd be awesome if this project encouraged Sun (or someone else) to develop (a well working) JRE for a wider range of platforms, because then Java code would be even more portable, and runnable on even more embedded devices.

Linux is good, but it looks like the interface sucks. Windows Mobile is horrible with stupid little menus for everything, and Android uses the same thing? I hope the real platform is better. Of course since it's Linux we can make it better ourselves, right?

Apps seemed very slow on the demo, but could be due to the amount of memory available on that phone. It's nothing special, and provides nothing more exciting than symbian of the iPhone OS.

At least iPhone already has Google Maps and Services. Apple have integrated these services much better.

I believe Android will make no bigger impact than Windows Mobile. And that is only a single drop in the ocean.

I'm getting fed up with people criticizing the hardware that Android runs on. Even people who criticize the current look and feel of the interface are missing the point. Android is a software platform that distinguishes itself by being open and extensible. It isn't tied to any single piece of hardware or any single set of applications and any decent programmer will be able and allowed to add to its functionality or change its looks.

Good to know that it will run even on such old hardware.

from a visual point of view the user interface looks really terrible. for example the start screen: you might assume that they thought to make it easy to start an application. no! there's plenty of space on the screen, but everything is squashed into an apple-cover-flow like navigation, that makes it impossible to navigate quickly. when he shows the received calls, you can see more of the user interface and it looks VERY text-based. no icons,no anything plus an overdone cursorbar. sorry: yuck!

Yeah, in case any commenters want to come in to bash Android, this is only running on a 200MHz OMAP TI 730 chipset and just 64MB RAM / 64MB ROM. Android is running pretty damn fast for such old hardware. You have phones that are twice as good in hardware specs that run twice as slow as this. Android looks pretty promising so far.
