I'm from the other side of the world and yet this train so inspires me...Here in New Zealand we are only beginning to rediscover rail travel and a Flying Yankee styled three car set would be the perfect fit to re-establish the old 'Southerner' route between Invercargill and Christchurch. 70 years ago the NZR were planning a fleet of three car sets like the Flyer, but WWII intervened.
notin our generation here we have something awe inspiring in europe and japan they have their high speed trains in which the flying yankee is their ancestor
A true piece of railroad history. Thanks to all who have spent countless hours restoring the Yankee. I remember as a kid seeing this at Edaville Railroad in Carver Mass.
@dreambuilders48808 : flyingyankee@usa.net or go to our web site: flyingyankee@ usa.com. The office phone number is 603-661-3317. The Flying Yankee is under restoration at the Hobo RR in Lincoln and open for inspection on occaission. Our next scheduled open house at the Flying Yankee in Lincoln is September 25, 2010
The streamline body and and its shiny stainless steel, not to mention the shapely head unit just kepted me wondering. I always loved going to edeville just to look at it. In fact, it left such an impression on me im still a big train buff till this very day. Haha i used to dream about the Flying Yankee in my dreams where id trie dto catch it and get a ride. Yup, i probably still dream about it. Love this train and it so amazing to see it be refurbished.
There really is something about the Flying Yankee that leaves an impression on you. Im 25 years old now and when i was i little boy my parents would bring me to edeville every year starting since i was 4 or 5. Well, even with all the distractions of the active steam engines and amusements rides id always stare at the Yankee and wonder what it looked like it side and what is was like when it was used. It really does stick out, even as a little boy i new there was something special about it
A tender moment for railfans. I saw the Flying Yankee many times at Edaville. On one memorable occasion, a group of railfans and their girlfriends stopped to admire the engine. One man, overcome with emotion, unable to continue his conversation, was fighting to hold back tears, but finally succumbed and broke down crying. His girlfriend, having no clue, asked what was wrong with him. Another friend, understanding what was happening, replied, "I think he has a cinder in his eye".
So many fond memories of seeing this beautiful piece of machinery at Edaville when I was younger. My dad has a beautiful picture he took of the it next to #1455, the B&M Mogul. Does anyone know its whereabouts now?
B&M 1455 is currently at the Danbury Railway Museum in Danbury, CT. There were plans to restore it to operation, but I'm not aware of that project's current status.
This looks like the precursor to today's European and Asiatic high-speed trains. America had the lead and lost it, it seems.
