Excellent video, but please make a habit of not walking between the boat and the ship, it's not good practice even when you have a good lee side, a rogue wave or wash from another ship often catches people out...speaking from experience....
again, really skillful editing/sound synch, in boat-water motion as well as close-up and tele choices. I like the way Interceptor pilot skills shown alongside large ship. Thanks
Boarding a ship not under way or at anchor in heavy weather is very difficult and dangerous keeping the vessel on a set course and spees allows the cutter to nip into the slip stream of the larger vessel where the worst of the swell is depressed by the forward movement of the lager vessel. At a standstill the differential of the two vessel sizes on the swell becomes scarily apparent when your attempting to board either way hats off to the pilots and crews been there its a real white knuckle ride
I used to do this work on a snibby the Prickett in the humber single gardner engine. She could handle the weather very sturdy build.Over fourty years ago now.
You want to see a well built boat . look at pilot boats, because they are made to last, usually steel. ocassionaly thick aluminum , never fiberglass. I see aliminum and rib,
@LibertaerUeberAlles Last time i heard of one falling in the ocean was in the Wun de funk , pudget sound as its called The inlet to Seattle Washington.
I notice on some unloaded ships the propeller is really close to the water's surface. Seems like scary stuff for the unlucky pilot who falls into the soup!
chrisjoneschrisjones normal choppers cat go out in da same conditions as these pilots can seen these boats go out in force 11s chopper pilot would simpley say no to windy unless it was a fuking chinnook
besides it would cost a fortune this is effective any way these guys are expert mariners day no exactly wat there doin !!!
Questo è il MIGLIORE video mai visto su Youtube!!! Bellissimo, stupendo, meraviglioso!! Ottima musica, magnifiche immagini.....complimenti davvero!!
(NB: the translation from italian to english is not difficult, you can do by yourself if you wish....but I wanted to express my emotions in my own language)
Dangerous job. My brother does pilot in Dublin Port. I have seen these guys steering these pilot boats in Cobh. Very skilful handling. Put the rest of us to shame. Some of the guys handling cruisers on the River Shannon take note. Watching a guy fluffing coming alongside is great (at the same time thanking God it wasnt me).
Mouth of Cork Harbour can be frightful if you get a southerly gale against an outgoing tide. Like a lot of others in 30 footers we had to to hang back there a a few times while to await a change of tides. But the interaction of Cork Harbour's obeisance to gravity and weather means stiff seas right there
I am very interested in this job as a career. What schooling does it require? How many years experience until you can become a marine pilot? Is the pay good? I heard it is but not really sure what its like.
No the best thing to do is keep the boat going ahead about 7-8kts with a little helm on 10-15 degrees dependant on the side of the vessel to be boarded.
@freebeer08 Dickhead they are combined wet weateher/self inflating life jackets 3.50 you can clearly see this, you my friend are a knob end stick to playing with boats in your bath and leave the real world to those that know what their doing.
The 'pilots' are fully qualified Captains who swap a life at sea for a life of sea and land. They are the coolest guys who know their water, channels, rocks, sand bars, atolls and ships.
Terrific video! I wish I could sit in this boat at such rough whether.
Sorry, for a silly question, but I live too far from sea and not everything here is clear for me...
What is this boat made for? And what are the guys doing? Is it a kind if rescue ship that helps other vessels struck in stormy whether? But it is a rather small one if compared to another ship...
its a pilot boat, they bring pilots (the yellow jackets) to the ships; these ships cross the world and every harbor or straight has sifferent conditions in terms of weather, tide, depth etc. you really gotta know how to handle the different conditions. it would be too much for one captain to learn so in every harbor a pilot takes over command of the ship to guide her in and out
If they stoped the ship, all the pilot boats dynamic stability and steerage would be lost, as would the ships, and it would be harder to do the job, clearly you dont know what your talking about, and are obviously an angry, bitter individual to have posted such a shit coment to start with!
All ships, boats, yachts any water craft have to have water flowing past their rudders to steer. The last thing one wants especially in confined waters is to lose steering control..its akin to a stall of a airplane or worse still a stall on final approach to land. So all water craft must keep up movement to avoid this with the optimal speed depending on the design of the ship, boat etc. just like different planes have different stall speeds
I had an opportunity to ride this boat, and it was a little bit of paradise. The pilots and crews are second to none. I lack the words to thank the Cobh pilots for allowing me to participate in their daily world.

Respect for the Pilot. to restrain such a small boat with such troubled waters really is rare. Skipping the fact that it also had much luck :-).

I bet that beast's engine(s) got 5000-6000 HP?
Btw, dynamic stability & steerage is probably something that guy doesn't understand anyway.
So don't waste your time on replying to those comments ;)
