M1S1ForgottenSongs - Hank could play the solos and the bits in between and a few chords - if you don't know this stuff in the early 60's then best to keep quiet.
I see this was a big hit in 1966 in New Zealand but I don't remember it!! Having heard it now, I think its quite a strong number. I do like the backing vocals of the Shadows on this one.
@philipm06 perfect in it's way.... face it when he plays with his son... suddenly it's like Hank can only play solo's perfectly, but he probably never could play guitar in a classic way or even just playing chords... :P
Wow-rare to arrive on a page where people are not about to rip each other to shreds...anyway, didn't mind early Cliff and then things changed '63....and then along comes this gem. Liked it a lot cause it really sat well alongside the avalanche of great music at the time, and although not "edgy" for the Stones-it was for Cliff. After that bye bye Cliff for me.
Another very remarkable thing... I know almost every Shadows' (& Cliff Richard) songs.... They all have the sound of the Shadows.... Except this one.... I couldn't believe my ears... A Cliff & Shadows song from the Rolling Stones..... But I really claim this sounds.... like The Beatles! :O
I'd like to remark one thing... I've got an LP over here with this song (History of British Pop vol.2 - Cliff Richard and the Shadows).... And as I can read, I see behind the title of this song it shows "Richard - Jagger"... So NOT "RichardS".... Could it possibly be that this is written by Cliff Richard and Mick Jagger????
@M1S1ForgottenSongs a richards and jagger song...... kieth dropped the s as at the time he had a falling out with his dad,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,jagger wouldnt write with cliff ,,lets face..
Thanks lorjim, a super production on a great story-telling song that deserved better than a UK chart placing of 15, just too much competition around at the time perhaps
The Stones version is quite lethargic and an example of how decent songs were often trotted out simply to fill albums - however this arrangement turns it into a classic. Cliff is always dismissed as an also-ran from the post-Beatles (mainly thanks to the drippy - but massive-selling- ballads he put out during that time. It is overlooked how many great singles he made with The Shadows between 64 & 67: this track, On The Beach, I Could Easily Fall, Time Drags By, In The Country etc
@RetroCool73 wow i disagree - and don't mean to start a war at all. but i guess your a cliff fan and imma stones fan so that the way it goes. least were both music fams
Am in the US and getting Cliff and the Shadows was a real mountain in the 70's. Love this and the others I was able to get from RIP in San Francisco. Thank you for getting us Cliff/Shadows fans the music in the US. Love YA Jude
The Shads play it with such drive and authority, it pretty well nullifies any of the other versions. Great '66 Burns guitar tone from the great Hank B. Marvin! And Cliff ain't bad either....
This song belongs to the "Invasion of the British Rock". It was very hard to compete with other bands like The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, The Kinks etc. After that time we didn't almost hear from Cliff & the Shadows. It was a pity.

The Stones' version blows this insipid cover out of the water; it sounds much more organic.

I can remember this song from 1966. I think it's a great song and should have been included on Cliff's 50th anniversary album.

Got to agree with you there. I'm no fan of Cliff but this version is preferable to the hipster indifference that comes across in the Stones' version.
