Taijiquan has many different types of skills. Some can be understood instantly and others take time. If we are talking about body development, this can be like moving your teeth with braces. It can take many years to physically transform the body.
Master Ma Yue Liang even said that it took him 10 years to find his Qi, and another 30 years to develop it.
@ChenShanDe i completely disagree...talking from taichi adepts such as wang hai jun and david gaffney...as wang haijun says the people who want to learn applications so quickly will forever be limited in their skill..he stressed to me on many occasions dont get caught up in wanting to learn applications..theres many stages to taiji...so what you deem "bullshit" goes against the traditions and knowledge of many master over the past few hundred years..
you cant learn it in the first month..tai chi is one of the slowest martial arts to learn because you have to move from your centre..you have to have the kua in the right position..develop root..learn to keep peng..and much more
I have heard this before, but I think it really depends on what you put into it. If you learn an internal martial art from a good teacher who can explain to you the physics behind why the techniques work as well as how to move with whole body power, you can fight within 3 years. True, it isn't like boxing or muay thai where you can ALMOST immediately apply what you have learned, but still it doesn't take 10 years or some bullshit like that.
@Capoeirista81 ps capoeirista..wang hai jun was chen zeng leis personal disciple.....i'd rather follow his advice..if you want to learn more on the art david gaffney has written excellent books..how you can say that within three years your kua has relxed enough,, you have learnt the art of chansjin..and developed fajin lol...im sorry...thats living in fantasy land...
Again, I hold firm in my belief that it doesn't take many years to be able to fajin or relax the hips. Like I said, it's what you put into it. The reason we do stance training in the internal martial arts is to be able to issue power. It's nothing mystical really. It's a neuromuscular re-wiring of the muscles, tendon, and ligaments to train you to move with whole body power. This is the "internal" in the "Internal Martial Arts".
ironically i know a sun style taiji instructor who rolled with a bjj black belt and beat him 3 out of 3 times at his own game in less than 1 minute each. why? because none of them know how to protect their groin, or any other vulnerable area. i know someone tried juji gatame and got their leg bitten..fight was over.
Dude when will you learn it's not about the style but how you train and how good your teacher is. Why are you taking Taiji if you keep bad mouthing it? No wonder you're not making progression. I've seen Taiji practicioners take down monsters more effective than any bjj or boxer ever could. I can deal with boxers and grapplers with ease with just 2 years of chen trainnnig so what's your excuse?
yet any kung fu master will tell you it takes years to learn and many more to perfect. i think what nomind was saying is that...maybe its good to study something simpler, and quicker to learn in addition to your taiji. id have to agree.
Taiji is the "ten year art" but even more important than the fighting applications (which are deadly) is the spiritual and internal side of the cultivation... Sim pooh ho and some other sifus call it Taiji Gong instead of Quan because only 1/3 is for fighting, the rest is for enlightenment... great vid, BTW thanks!
no 1 aspect of taiji is more important than the other. its all about balance they all have an equal part to play and we should explore each. but every 1 has a favourite. so each to there own.
I'd agree with what your master says. But I'm not interested in BJJ or western boxing, as effective as they may be. Taiji is elegant and effective regardless if its Chen, Wu, Wu/Hao, Sun or Yang. I think its worth the extra effort to develop this art. You've probably heard the chinese saying "Hsing-I fists can kill in a year, but Taiji doesn't leave the training hall for ten." Besides Taiji teaches your body so much more then just fighting right?
These applications are great! Chen Zhenglei is a true master. I study the Yang family style with master Yang Jun and we do the same applications. People often try to say one style is better then another style of taiji, but they are all the same in the end.

you can learn taiji combat in the first month. All depends on your training, what details are revealed and how smart you practice.

Maybe you will learn some self defense.... but only the techniques, not Taijiquan.
I remeber... a few years ago there was a application seminar with my master Chen Zheng Lei in China.
3/4 of the seminar we did basics like peng, lu, ji, an...... I was disapointed.
Much later during practicing I understood. The VERY important part is to learn how your body is working. The connectivity, the angles and so on.
If you start with apps before that stage.....well, it´s like I said in the beginning

First, I never said "bullshit"! :-(
You mentioned Wang Hai Jun, and that is what I meant in my statement.
I am a bit confused now.... what do you mean by ".....goes against the traditions and knowledge of many master over the past few hundred years.."???
