I do believe that Bach was a deeply religious man, and his music shows it. I still find it pathetic that the most popular music today is NOTHING compared to Bach's beauty. Music today can't compare with Bach's music, that's all I'm saying.
One of the great benefits of our childish society: rejection of death and violence. How lucky we are, now bloods and guts in detail are ridiculous, guns and shots are fine though... make your rationalistictictic comments here, proving all the idiocy of faith of others and go back to your Wii and active allegiance to mass consumption of second hand ideas, so that a piece of peace may endure until "gaspingly" over-motivated "fanatics" (as you may call believers) make a new stupid war!
The music is one of my favourites. It's sung and played beautifully (I only don't like the dominating bassoon tones in the last few bars), the choir sounds heavenly. The video is a complete mismatch with the music. This is sung when Jesus' suffering has ended, when his body is lying in the grave, waiting for the resurrection. The peaceful, comforting music does not fit the cruelty shown in the video clip, obviously intended to be extremely realistic, but disliked by many viewers.
@dutchmusician1 I agree. This song is one of my absolute favourites too - I have sung this piece a few times, and it's a beautiful and soothing part, nowhere near the brutality shown in the video. One must also remember the "Ach Herr,laß dein lieb Engelein" that follows, ending the Passion with brightness and hope. Whoever made this video probably did so with the best intentions, but I have to agree with you Dutch... mismatch.
Jesus is not dead in the cross and not at all, it was just an illusion made by god, how can he be dead if he'll return here among us to destroy the false messiah, the pork and the cross.
When I watched Gibson's movie I didn't like it and I thought that's a one big bloody massacre. Now, when I watched it with this music, I almost cried.
@zaggy3110 How do you think a man dies on a cross? From any point of view (less Disney's one, may be) a man dies on a croos completly masacred, as Gibson perfectly shows
Art transcended! Supreme Bach, the father of all musicians ... While The virtuoso Niccolo Paganini signed a pact with the devil, then you, you entered an alliance with the Almighty!

Matthew 25:40 And the King shall answer & say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
41Then he will say to them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil & his angels
42For I was an hungry, & ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, & ye gave me no drink
43I was a stranger, & ye took me not in: naked & ye clothed me not: sick, & in prison, & ye visited me not
But it goes so well, now I don't know why many ppl complaining about the movie??
He did most likely suffer just as much or worst. The whole idea here is his passion, the one he had for humankind, and that is just what I see, and know.
It is not needed to discuss about the music here, I guess... brilliant Herreweghe as always.
The movie though is really inappropriate.
There's a tradition of romanticising the passion of Christ, but it was definitely unnecessary to de-romanticise it like in that movie. We know that he "suffered for our sins" but really, making a gory movie scene out of that is just... superfluous.
The video clip enhances the inherent sorrow of the music. What a fabulous recording. Herreweghe always imparts impressive insights, and he is not generally a speed merchant, nor does he think that all Bach movements are dance music.
It's snuff and propaganda, but it is brilliantly directed. Similar to the city sequence in Apocalypto, which is one of the best in movie history. Whether Gibson directed it is another question. Personally, I don't believe it, especially after seeing the mess that was Braveheart.
Of course, Bach is the greatest. :) If you want to see a brilliant use of Johannes Passion on film, check out last 10 minutes of Tarkovsky's Mirror. It's pure magic.
Involving the best music of all time until extinction of the human race and the planet to one of the worst movies in movie History, made by a mental abortion is the most execrable bad tastes and, above all, an insult to the greatest off all Genie: J.S. Bach.
couldn't agree with you more!!! It was a completely uncalled-for movie which made one cringe just to glance at it!! Over-acting by the bucketful, massive deviation from the strict Biblical account, completely gratuitous violence.... even worse a mess than Braveheart, although many would have thought that completely impossible :P.
The Johannes Passion has been one of my favourite works since I was a child, and I would have a hard time pointing out a part of it that gives me a more intense aesthetic experience than Ruht wohl.
I like this version quite a bit, and I feel it would be even better if it were a bit faster.
De film 'Passion of the Christ', maakt steeds weer heftige emoties bij me los.
Zeer indrukwekkend. Zowel de muziek als de filmbeelden erbij....

My own children have not inherited the Bach gene, more's the pity. What child chooses organ music above an ice cream?!!!I'm the weirdo, not my kids!!
Oh how wonderful to be brought up in the atmosphere where you hear the organ most of the time.... I have never heard Paul Esswood's and I listen to him little too sweet for me, but it matter of taste of course. love of Bach always starts in childhood may be you missed that with your kids, but never mind , Bach will enter in their life at some point .
My children say that they have heard too much Bach!! But I live in hope. I an not really a Paul Esswood fan, but more of the memory and the emotions that he seemed to create in the house. 'Ruht Wohl' was sung by us at my grandfather's funeral, he loved it too, and it was an honour to sing it for him, creating positive energy and emotion when most are sad. We were joyful for his life. My grandfather's last words were "in Jesus Christ, Amen", and he left us with a smile- extraordinary experience.
God Bless your grandfathers soul... I have been thinking about this for last two days and I must say that I am amazed with this eternal moment...thanks for shearing this with me....Hey I think the tempo is little too slow here what do you think?
I am not a religious person, but adore Bach, especially this chorale. This clip is a very actual rendition of what probably did happen, although we can never really know. There will be those that hate this video yet Jesus died for them. They will say I don't care but He did. They will mock Him still yet Jesus says "forgive them for they know not what they do". The proud resist the love of Jesus and the needy (humble) say Jesus I need you.
This clip of the crucifixion of Christ is the central theme of Gibson's masterpiece; a chaotic, extraordinarily violent, act of terrorism we see played out every day, somewhere in the world; the scene, the actor, the beading of light, 3 distinct facial transformations, as if 3 separate actors played the Son of Man; the horror in His Death correctly coincides with destruction of sin and perfectly balanced euphoria in the wake of His Resurrection.
