  • I have revisited your videos many times to check on your DD basslines. Formerly with a different account which i had to delete due to stupid google merging with youtube but anyway. Just leaving a message of thanks, great to see someone taking on Johns great basslines.

  • Man , One day i want to play this song like you play!

  • You are good!!! congrats!

  • Very nicely done, sir.

  • great brother!! you have the flow!!! \m/

  • wow. thank you

  • great

  • You look like Ed Norton

  • @ofsinope - I'll take that as a compliment! :+)

  • @ofsinope He sounds like Ed Norton too

  • GOOD! BUT CUTTING RES IS MORE VERYGOOD I THINK。

  • nice playing! i learned something about those ghosted notes... i've basically been playing it with the same fingerings & such, but i wasn't ever sure what he was doing there, so thanks for explaining it. I don't know about you guys, but this song used to tire my fingers when i was learning it, which was 10 years ago when i got to the level to be able to even attempt playing this after playing for about 4 years. I learned it as a cover in a band as well... it's lots of fun to play!!

  • sorry to be a pain in the neck, but i know i speak for other people when i ask this for you to reupload this in a better quality :) btw awesome playing and i learned couple of DD songs from you, keep it up :)

  • Cracking video lesson, tougher to play than it looks with all the percussive ghost notes!

Proves that John Taylor was more than just a teenybop idol: he could actually play!

Nice one zumazmusic. (and you've even got the same bass he used to use)

  • Cracking video lesson, tougher to play than it looks with all the percussive ghost notes!

Proves that John Taylor was more than just a teenybop idol: he could actually play!

    Nice one zumazmusic.

  • @bigjay1404

no kidding... what modern bass players can anyone think of??? mmmm, the only 1 that really comes to mind is Carlos D, but then he was obviously inspired by 80s bass players ;-)

  • yo thanks dude! i had to learn this for a cover gig!

  • AMAZING! such a good player!

  • One of my favourite bass lines and basses! I will have one one of these days. I have a Kubicki right now which was also one of my favs growing up. Great work!

  • @BeyondDarwin - I have a Kubicki as well. They are truly great basses as well.

  • Yes, the sax part proved difficult for me to pick up too and I've not managed to do it yet!! So to anyone that can play this part.. nice one!! I think once I get an idea of the structure and fingering I'll be able to manage it... maybe

One day I'm going to sit down with lots of coffie, a decent tab ( the music notation kind), and this video and crack it once and for all!!

  • @xplanet2112 - Thanks for the comments. I have this bridge broken down slowly as an mp3 if you want it. Just follow the links to my homepage (from my channel) and e-mail me at my personal e-mail.

  • @xplanet2112

yah, it was difficult for me too. All you have to do really is do what i did ages ago: repeat 3:10-3:40 over & over & over & over until you get it ;-) I tabbed this by myself then... i don't even think there were tabs of this at the time (late 90s), & if there were, they were usually wrong :-/

  • @pessimystica

btw, that timing link is to the actual SONG, not this video

  • the solo during the sax solo is way dope! you rock

  • My drummer owe me $100! I told him that I'd been playing this right and not the fake version all these years... LOL!!

  • Dude! Thanks for posting-you make it look so easy...I've been working on this line for a while-your vid will help me get this dow.THANKS!

  • Hey killer bassing over here.. Sounds great! Love Duran Duran as well!

  • what are the notes

  • Never thought the bassline of this song was anything approaching like this - until now.

  • I just bought myself a Fender American Jazz and got on a bass for the first time in almost 20 years! First track... Rio! Thanks for making it a lot easier and for the inspiration.

  • @DrSpock71 - Fascinating Dr. Spock! Sorry, couldn't resist. I am glad to help!!! You have made my day good sir.

  • Outstanding job! Anyone who doesn't like this video is obviously tone deaf. KEEP PUSHING THE GROOVE!!

  • nice playing, how was your bass?

  • good lesson thanks bro

  • Another awesome video and great playing. I am getting more and more respect for DD. My version sounds like I'm plucking the root notes with my dick. Unfortunately it produces a small sound.

  • @BOULDERDP - Ouch! Try playing with a pick INSTEAD of your dick! You crack me up man!

  • @zumazmusic Are you in any bands where we can see you jam?

  • fuck to the yes. brilliant.

  • @mimsy12 - I second this motion if I do say so myself.

  • Rio was one of the first albums I learned as a kid playing bass, the whole album was made by those ghost notes John played, took the riffs to a whole new level, love your vids with the Aria man, that bass is Taylor's sound in a box, gotta find myself one of those basses one of these days, would like a vintage one though.

  • Good video. I think John Taylor actually uses a pick when he recorded this song and when he plays it live but kudos to you for pulling it off using the fingers.

  • @Retro80sDude - I am pretty sure you are thinking of Planet Earth. Rio has always been a fingered tune from anything I have ever seen. I have seen him play Girls on Film with a pick but that was a long time ago.

  • @zumazmusic Yup - Your are right. I just checked the live @ Hammersmith Odien 1982 and he is using his fingers. I was thinking of Planet Earth.

  • @zumazmusic Actually, I heard in an interview by Taylor he started playing with a pick. He even mentioned he could only play this song with a pick in the beginning because of the speed. At some point he did switch to finger.

  • Truly awesome:)

  • I think it was soul legend Nile Rodgers or Quincy Jones that "helped " John Taylor

    with this immortal bassline.

Duran Duran were recording in the USA and were working with these guys hence the originality. Sorry to dissapoint any one,but its a fact.

  • @TheCallumac - You are thinking of Nile Rodgers but that wasn't until Notorius. Rio was produced by Colin Thurston. Indeed, John was definitely influenced by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers. In that sense you are right.

  • @zumazmusic Y-E-S. Just like so.

  • @TheCallumac and Rio wasn't recorded in the US either :P in fact it was remixed for the US audience because of that fact.

  • I LUV IT!

  • hey great job zuma.i don't know what 64born is crying about. the ghost note tips you shared was very helpful. and i was impressed with your speed and performance.man some people will complain about anything. hey thanks for posting.and also your lesson on "save a prayer was helpful too. peace.

  • Nice playin but I agree with 64born a little. If your gonna post Rio as a "lesson" then make it a lesson. Break it down. Go back and break it down then repost. that would be considered a lesson. thanks

  • you nailed the tone! ario pro 2 rocks! great job

  • Great playing. Just one thing, I think you have a couple of the notes at the start of the chorus not quite right. You play E2.. E2.. E1 G1 A1 B1, when it's really E2, E2, E1 F#1 G#1 B1. Not a big deal and easy to miss but there it is.

  • Sorry, I messed that up.. You seem to be playing E2..E2.. E1 G#1 A1 B1.. When I'm pretty sure it's E2.. E2.. E1 F#1 G#1 B1.

  • @blackworm27 - without replaying my video and just playing my bass right now, I agree it is a G# and not an A in there. I don't think I played an A. If I did, then it's wrong.

  • im learning this for my next bass lesson, this has been a big help.thanks dude

  • brawooooooo , congratolate

  • Yeah, great, thanks Zuma, you've shown us you can play John Taylor basslines but hang on, couldn't we just have watched John Taylor playing them if that was the point? Personally i was hoping you might offer some kind of tutorial, you know, finger techniques or maybe breakdown the individual bassline runs but no, seems its more a case of 'hey, look at me while i play and get ready to be impressed'. Great playing but pointless from a learning perspective.

  • @64Born - Hey man, relax. This was my very first post on YouTube. I have since posted many more John Taylor bass lines. Sometimes I break it down, sometimes I don't. When I don't break it down, I usually call it a "bass performance." I left this one as "lesson" because I talk about the ghost notes for just a bit. I provide this as free entertainment. Some people happen to find it educational as well.

  • Did enyone notice the flickering light? I did, love zumaz anyway!

  • Wonderful!. The mystery to me about Taylor is this: how did he come with these funky lines given the song? It makes all the difference. Would you, given the rest of the song to add bass to, have come up with this kind of stuff?

  • @vcx9dfne - Well, that's the trick now isn't it?! Coming up with a great bass line, given a set of chords and the song's feel, is what every good bass player strives to achieve. John was quite aggressive in those early years like most young males in their late teens/early 20's. We all have something to prove at that age and I would say he made his point!

  • @zumazmusic brilliantlyput. Like all young musicians he was keen to show his stuff....and he did,..and it was stunning. Just as Zuma's re-creations are!

  • @vcx9dfne Very simple how he came up with thse basslines...One of his biggest influences was the late great Bernard Edwards of Chic, he learned from some of the best and developed his style from there....has nothing to do with being a young male or having something to prove, he's just a kick-ass bass playa...

  • Fuck i wish i can play this funky sound :P

  • Very nice work on those ghost notes, ever play an alembic? I think John Taylor did a little bit on a couple of the albums like Seven and the Ragged Tiger.

  • You're right on the money about those 'ghost' notes....maybe do another video showing slowly & up close how to do this fast technique! I wish my fingers could move that quick, nice job!

  • Very sweet!!! I have a whole different opinion of Duran Duran. That is a nice bassline!! For those of you who want a lesson. Just look at his fingers, and use your mind.. The tab is also online anywhere... What you get here is a nice interpretation of what it is SUPPOSED to sound like... quit complaining and pay someone 50 bucks an hour if you want a lesson. Thanks for posting Zuma.. helped me out tremendously

  • Comment removed

  • Definition of 'lesson': a structured period of time where learning is intended to occur.

So if beginners are not learning because it is too fast, not close up shots of both hands and the whole darn song, this video is not a lesson.

I'm sure people do have tutors they pay but if it states 'lesson' on here, that's what it should be.

    I

  • How dare you write such disgusting filth to me. Unless you send me a public apology, I will be forwarding your message to youtube with a complaint and if they don't do anything I'll be taking it to the Police as it came to me via email

  • Comment removed

  • thanks, well played do you think you can slow it down for us learners?

  • So where is the lesson? You showed one thing....briefly and then went into showing off! A good teacher is one who can pass on knowledge not one who just has it!

Slow it down for the beginners.

  • Freaking Awesome!!

  • Wow!

Awesome. I've loved the bass on the earlier duran stuff since I was a teenager and never really seen how it was done. Duran Duran were seriously under-rated musicians - especailly John Taylor.

    cheers!

  • excelente !! muy buen trabajo, felicitaciones desde argentina , un abrazo amigo ,

  • What is the difference between the RI and the original?

I hear they will no longer make the reissue in Japan and it will be made in Korea. Will that matter at all?

  • There are two basses out there at the moment. The RI series are made in Japan and are priced accordingly. The "SB-CB" is a cheaper version that was recently introduced. The RI is pretty damn close from what I have heard. I don't know about the CB. I haven't heard of the RI's being made in Korea.

  • Cool thanks Zuma. I read about them transitioning the sb 1000 production to Korea on an ebay site that was selling a Cliff Burton ReIssue. Also, the JT signature sb 1000 reissue seems to be discontinued. Is that because he switched to Peavey? Have you played his PEavey Sig? If so, which do you prefer? Happy holidays.

  • The Cliff Burton reissue is an "unofficial" one, that's why it's called the SB-CB. I'm pretty sure that's the only SB made elsewhere. If you contact Ishibashi in Japan he may still be able to get you a JT model. The Peavey is a completely different bass. Much thinner neck and nothing sound like an SB1000. I love both but I would take the Peavey to the gig because it ultimately has the fatter sound.

  • I am a huge Duran Duran fan and love your covers. You are a real inspiration. I want to play bass but it is frustrating!!! Have you ever thought of covering Promises Promises by Naked Eyes? I don't see anyone who has tried it. Its similiar (in my opinion) to Kajagoogoo Too Shy.

  • Thanks man, really helped me figure out the part during the sax solo.

  • Excellent playing man; very accurate. One little thing though; in choruses, at the end of the first and third phrases he does the F# and G octave slap/pops but at the end of the second and fourth phrases I'm pretty sure he does something different. You sure about the octave pops all four times?

  • homeslice, you are correct and it was also pointed out way earlier by someone else. I love that sound so much I became a bit overzealous with the pops! He only pops every other time. When he doesn't it sounds to me like he's just doing eight notes, possibly muting some notes as well.

  • Ok man, sorry to harp on that, I didn't know somebody else had already pointed it out, my bad! Do you know exactly what it is he does though?

  • @zumazmusic I wish you would re-record this one. I love it! Great song, great bass! Damn.....lol

  • Brill video/tuition, our band is about to learn this so this will be a great help to me. Tell me, do you know what effects JT used on this, it sounds like he used either a small amount of Chrous or Flanger?

  • Hey Zuma,

Great playing ,youre time and pitch is great. You played those lines right on.Thanks for sharing.i have always loved the bassline to this tune.

  • Great playing,

    nice cat too.

  • thanks. My band plays this and I would have never figured out the line by myself.

  • Zuma. Are you using the 1st or 2nd position on the tone switch?

  • hzdonut, you are hearing the 1st position or the most bright position. I have recently been digging the 6th position but for the Duran stuff you definitely want the brighter settings.

  • Thanks Zuma.. I knew it was one of the first two.. I recently started selling the reissues and immediately fell in love with these basses. My favorite is the second position. Im trying to spread the word on these and I'm sending people here to hear the tone.. Nice!

  • Zuma-great summary for the newbie. and great to see folks gettin' an education in how a groove can drive a whole song forward. much respect

  • very good on base....you make me want to learn...try to do pain by the riverside by live and we got a deal lol

  • great tone

  • This guy is amazing!!!!

  • Hi Zuma, which is harder...Rio or Girls on film...sweet playing by the way!

  • his views on duran wud be enlightenin

  • the Rio bass line makes the song, In fact JT one of the best bass line writers ever. another great job from you! Brilliant! I will get practicing!

  • Amazing man, where could I get my hands on the sheets to learn it??

  • Perfection!!!

  • could you do smoe vids from songs on the Arcadia lp

  • Great job however, TURN ON THE LIGHTS SO WE CAN WATCH WHAT YOU'RE DOING!!!

    LMAO!

Other than that, thanks for the lesson! ;-)

  • Man that is a great bass line. The song is kinda corny though. Great playing brother!

  • great bass playing Zuma! this is my favourite song of all time!

  • this bassline rocks :)

  • thanks, very useful. is there an accurate tab for this? your too quick for me to see!

  • Great stuff man! Learning a good bit from ya! Thanks.

  • Very nicely done.

  • first, you're great.

second, i'm new to the bass, coming from a guitar background. so nautrally i'm hitting ghost notes wth my thumb, on the string below, such as on the low e string, with my thumb, just before i play the higher e note. is this not acceptable?

  • FAbulous

  • how do u do the chours bit like the slap or wat ever the is i cant get it

  • Here is the thing, don't try the conventional slap technique, what you have to do is just finger the notes but then you "pluck" with your middle finger. So, just play the octaves but pull the strings on the top notes only. Don't slap with your thumb in this case (unless you're REALLY quick and can get into position again for the next run).

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is great. I am a beginner bassist and I always thought this tune would be UNPLAYABLE for me. I scanned a few tabs and then after watching you, I was able to figure out the seemingly impossible verse (havent attempted the chorus yet haha) - the ghosting came easily for me - but the spreading of my fingers and the speed/keeping up with the music is the hard part for me. I guess practice practice practice! Zuma - you are amazing.

  • I'm just starting to play the bass also -- about 3 weeks now.

You are right, practice, practice, practice!!!

Try 'It's my life" on the bass; it is a fun song to play.

  • Great job! But why do you do not use your pinky? it might ease the job a little bit. Nevertheless, great playing.

  • Great job! I've played this song years ago back in high school but never like that. What effects are you using? compression, chours, EQ,??? and what kind of amp are you using? And if you have a site where you can get those tabs please post it. ?

  • Don't know if someones mentioned already but the cat behind the chair was ready and waiting just before he started playing!

  • Yeah, I may redo it one day but I wouldn't hold my breath! Thanks

  • Great stuff Zuma. I love the bass line of this song. I think you should re-do this video. The lighting and production is just not up to par as some of your later posted videos. I can't criticize your playing so I will bug you a bit on the video. :)

  • awesome rio work! you so nailed the bass/sax solo!

  • hey can u plz send me the tab

  • I always wanted to be able to play this and a few others. Once I get high speed on my own computer I will get it down using this. I;d like to see hungry like the wolf too!

  • Your pretty good at this also if you haven't done union of the snake can you pleace do it

  • thiss...rockksssss

  • man..... you are really good

  • Zuma is such an excellent teacher!

He breaks it down and makes it perfectly comprehensibile. Those who really 'CAN' ...teach. Okay, maybe 'every other note isn't a ghost note;~)

  • I am glad I saw your video, because I caught a mistake when I recorded it today. I was going to A instead of F# during the second lead after the sax solo See if you can catch it!

  • I like the cat.

  • Fuck That. Aria's are outstanding.

    Great woods construction, and playability.

  • Yeah, great woods construction and playability, boring, insipid 'fart' tone...

  • I don't know what your talkin about. I get a killer tone out of my Aria Sb. Bright, clear, precise, w/ punch and thick.

  • zuma, thanks once again for making me want to shoot myself...ill never be able to play like this. im kidding of course. thanks for the inspiration.

  • Great song and Bass line, but this and Kokomo share the title of the most pointless sax solo in music history

  • Great job as usual Zuma...

A song like this is where the SB-1000 really excels...The string spacing is the same at the bridge as it is at the nut. Very narrow. Makes for faster finger playing, but a little more difficult to slap.

  • Fantastic!! A very difficult bassline to play and very fun. Requires a lot of endurance for sure. You play it well!

  • Excellent Job. Rio and Hungry like the wolf are two of my all time favorites! I always thought that Rio had a killer bass line, sax solo, and of course Nick Rhodes classic Jupiter 8 arppegiator!

  • At 1.11 there is a cat right next 2 u. u r awesome at Bass and i wish i could play like u

  • Damn your good I tried playing the song without the ghost notes and I was like wtf that doesnt sound right

  • well..GREAT JOB!!

    I love duran duran..

listen, maybe you have a CORRECT tab of this song?

I see that you play it the same way duran duran does..

  • Thanks for the great lesson!

  • I enjoyed it Zuma. Especially its a John Taylor piece! Great stuff! It's always my dream (frustrated) to play just like the way you do.

  • nice work

  • great job at all your posts! thanks man for sharing your talent, I enjoy it a lot (and i m not a bass player).

  • I have loved this song for years. Goldfinger's hilarious cover/Dio parody was what introduced me to it, and I love the original far better (of course). But it wasn't until the song was made as Rock Band DLC that I noticed how amazing the bass was... I'm a guitarist, 4 years or so, and i actually want to buy a bass just because of this song. This is one of the best basslines I have ever heard.

  • Great job. Thanks for the lesson.

  • I can't find the Sax solo anywhere!!!!

I just want to hear it, that's the best sax solo I've ever heard.. This song is genius and Americans have no taste in music because I grew up here and never heard this song often.

  • Americans have no taste in music? Where do u come up w/ that?????

  • Right, huh?! blodandfun, where do you live? Rio is still played on the radio quite often in Los Angeles.

  • Seriously, this song took me AGES to learn. Love it. Great post.

  • One of my favorite bass lines of all time. Absolutely great, great job.

  • You got me inspired to pick up my bass again and discover the orginal reason I wanted to play music and that was hearing Duran Duran songs on the radio and John Taylor, Bernard Edwards and Robert "Kool" Bell. And you are a natural born teacher because you are very patient with how you show the song to the posters thanks again.

  • At the risk of sounding redundant: amazing.

  • zuma, zuma, zuma ... i can´t stop watching your videos ... i´m a bass player myself and a big DD fan. i´m impressed of your skills and your "John Taylor´s classic years" bass collection ... AWESOME ... i´ve already learned a lot from your videos and i hope you keep on covering their song an teaching us ... thx a lot

  • 4:38 : I cant believe it !!! you are the twin of John Taylor (playing the bass...)

    ;o) Awesome !!!!! heavenly !!!!!!

  • WOW THIS IS Amazing!

    I LOVE IT!

  • Amazing work.

Is fantastic that a "only teen pop band" such Duran Duran have this fantastic music.

    :)

  • Hello there Zuma ;-)..im a girl from Denmark and a big fan of duran..it is soooo wonderfull finely to see one that actually CAN play Durans songs, upload them here and make it sound wonderfull..yes we thank you!!

  • Zuma I got a girlfriend for ya, she's a terrific slap bassist. Check her vids here in YouTube under lydiakaboesj and tell me what you think.

  • Oh you mean Lydia? I already married her and had kids with her...IN MY DREAMS! I hope my girlfriend doesn't read this.

  • Dude

You rock ...Love your vids keep it up

  • Zuma remember me? I didn't forget about our project, but I actually have the ability to scan in my Rio transcripts now if you are still interested?

  • Let's do it man! Send me a message so I can give you my e-mail.
